Re: [cobirds] PERC Gardens at CSU in Fort Collins (Larimer) on 11/17

2015-11-19 Thread Charles Hundertmark
Many years ago Barbara McKnight, one of my early mentors in New Mexico, banded
a juvenile Black-eared Bushtit as a juvenile in Cedar Crest, NM. Subsequently,
the bird was recaptured by Barbara as a Common Bushtit with brown auriculars.
Her publication of this finding was one of the key factors in lumping of the
Black-eared and Common Bushtits, causing many birders to loose a species from
their life lists.

[cobirds] Purple Finch in Bent County - update

2015-11-19 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

After a one day absence, the female-type Purple Finch I reported from my
Las Animas feeders on November 16th returned at 10:40 this morning. It
is hanging around my neighborhood, and may be either ridiculously easy
or impossible to relocate. Birders are welcome to try, provided I know
in advance. Yesterday, while looking, I photographed a female
Ladder-backed Woodpecker near my feeders, but it did not visit them, or
my water feature. This species is rare but regular in the private canyon
country in southern Bent County but very rare away from native junipers,
cholla or scattered cottonwood trees along desert arroyos. It was the
eighth woodpecker species I've had in my yard. I got to observe
Ladder-backed and Red-bellied Woodpeckers at the same time from my
window, surely a rare bird combo in Colorado.

We had hurricane force winds on November 17th, which caused quite a bit
of damage, but brought no measurable precipitation. The story is
apparently different north, south, east and west of here. The Purple
Finch was regular during the wind event, but no one in their right mind
would have braved the elements to get here.

I still have three Canyon Towhees and one Curve-billed Thrasher
regularly in my yard.

Respectfully,

Duane Nelson
Las Animas, Bent County, CO

[cobirds] Return of The Great Boulder Caper, Fri., Nov. 27

2015-11-19 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, Birders.

Please join Colorado Field Ornithologists, the Boulder Bird Club, and the
American Birding Association for the *n*th-annual *Great Boulder Caper,
Black Friday, Nov. 27.* We'll get under way at *Cottonwood Marsh, *off 75th
St. in eastern Boulder County, at *7:30 am,* and we'll caper till sundown.
Like Huckleberry Finn, you may come and go as you please; you don't have to
spend the whole day with us.

Hard to say where we'll go or what we'll see, but our very broad objective
will be to visit various lakes and ponds in eastern Boulder County. Maybe
we'll see Bonaparte's Gulls, a Swamp Sparrow or two, Harlan's Hawks and
Cassiar Juncos, divers geese and gulls, problematic goldeneyes, a rare
grebe or loon...or maybe, probably, something entirely unexpected. The
highlight last year was a stunning display of anti-crepuscular rays. I
figured it had to be the End Times, for sure, but evidently not.

A little birdie tells me the El Paso County mafia will be out in full force
for this one. Good news--they sometimes find the good birds, and always
send the entertainment tilt-o-meter into the red zone. (To our visitors
from the far west: Yes, we'll pause for a moment when a Blue Jay is
detected. But don't get *too* carried away.)

The outing is free and open to the public. No experience necessary.
Children and non-birding companions welcome. Carpooling helpful. Bring
binocs if you have 'em. Bring a scope to share. Or not. Bring leftover
tofurkey (this is the Great BOULDER Caper, after all) and orange slices and
such. People who whine will be blindfolded and abandoned at Flatirons Mall.
(Did y'all notice that REI has stolen our idea about birding on Black
Friday??)

No RSVP necessary. Just show up. But feel free to email lead caperer Yours
Truly with any questions: tedfloyd57 "at" hotmail "dot" com.

I'm looking forward to capering with many of you.

See you on Black Friday!

[cobirds] Swans at Valmont Reservoir, Boulder

2015-11-19 Thread Christian Nunes
Hi All,
I spotted 14 Tundra Swans and 1 Snow Goose out in the east end of Valmont
Reservoir this afternoon. I watched them from the City of Boulder Open Space
and Mountain Parks Annex office off 75th St. This area is open to the public,
but the gate will be closed at the end of the day. Shouldn't be a problem with
the sun setting so early. Tundra Swans have been annual here for the last
several years, but they don't always come in such large flocks.
Thanks,
Christian NunesBoulder

[cobirds] Siskin Irruption, COS

2015-11-19 Thread Steve Brown
Hi COBirders,

I haven't seen others mention it, but I am having a Pine Siskin irruption in my
yard in NW Colorado Springs (Mountain Shadows). I put up a 6m net in the
backyard, and just finished banding 71 siskins and 9 juncos. That makes 130
banded siskins in three days this week, with only 5 birds returned from banding
earlier. I look out at my feeders, and most of the plethora of siskins is STILL
unbanded! I think it is official!

[cobirds] Barr Lake, Adams - Say's Phoebe

2015-11-19 Thread Gregg Goodrich
Cobirders,

Ann Troth and I had a Say's Phoebe on the dam behind Bird Conservancy at
Barr Lake this morning. Wonder where it is roosting. Distant photo in eBird
check list below.

I remember Bill Kaempfer had one on the Barr Lake CBC.

We also had 10 Snow Geese and 1 Greater White-fronted Goose SW of the
visitors center among the thousands of Canada/Cackling Geese. It took us
about an hour to find the Greater White-fronted Goose. You think it would
be easy with those orange legs and bill, but when they are sitting with
their heads tucked it is hard.

[cobirds] Tennessee Warbler at PERC, CSU, Fort Collins (Larimer), noon on 11/19

2015-11-19 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
I had a TENNESSEE WARBLER briefly at noon today at the PERC gardens in the
southwest corner of the Fort Collins CSU campus. I was collecting and
photographing aphids in the viburnum bush area west of the south end of the
north-south sidewalk that goes thru the gardens. The warbler flew past very
low to the ground and landed at the base of a shrub. Of course, I didn't have
my binoculars out or my long lens handy. I rushed over to get these items from
my camera bag, finally tracked the bird down nearby and got two quick photos
before it flew off to the north. I looked for over an hour and never refound
it. It very well could be in the area. Might be loosely associating with
juncos. It was always low (on the ground or within a foot of the ground).
Greenish glow to the entire upperparts, no contrast between head and back, long
thin slightly decurved bill (longer, thinner and more decurved than
Orange-crowned), pale undertail coverts, shortish tail, suggestion of pale
supercillium, no wingbars, medium gray flight feather, no significant eyering.
I can share photos if anyone wants to see them. This is my first clearly
eastern warbler species of the entire autumn period. Good luck to anyone
attempting to refind this bird.

2015-11-19 Thread David Wade
Dave gave me a heads up about the Tennessee Warbler today and I went see
for myself. I prowled around the block-sized arboretum for more than an
hour without much luck. With only a handful of common birds and a high
flying Bald Eagle, I was ready to give it up but thought I should take one
more pass through the shrubs and trees that still held leaves. That last
pass payed off. I posted a few pics on my ebird list.

[cobirds] PERC Gardens at CSU in Fort Collins (Larimer) on 11/17

2015-11-19 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
This is a couple days old but decided it might be of enough interest to
mention. On Tuesday at the Plant Environmental Research Center (PERC) gardens
north of W. Lake Street in the southwest corner of the CSU campus in Fort
Collins I had a small flock of Bushtits feeding mostly in cranberrybush
viburnums maybe 50 yards north of Lake Street. This area is west of the main
north-south sidewalk that goes thru what remains of the gardens (due to our
constructing a new football stadium). At least one of the birds in this flock
of about 15 was a form I don't think I've ever seen in Colorado, a
"black-eared" (see a field guide, reportedly found most often in the mountains
of the Southwest). I have a pic if anyone wants to see it.

[cobirds] Walker Pit, Douglas

2015-11-19 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
The Walker Pit this morning held a couple of hundred Cackling & Canada Geese.
Among them I saw two Greater White-fronted Geese. The geese probably move in
and out to feed, so if you go you might not find them.

Also, Vicki Monroe, south of Franktown, reported two Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches
at her feeder this morning.
