[cobirds] Yellow-throated Warbler, Fort Collins, Larimer

2015-12-16 Thread Brad Biggerstaff
The Yellow-throated Warbler once again graced observers with its presence
this morning in north Fort Collins. Same address as previously reported,
seen at about 8:30... And then I had to leave.

[cobirds] Arapahoe County/Pine Warbler

2015-12-16 Thread Carol Blackard
Hi, snow birders,

We had a new yardbird at about 3:20 pm and again at 3:50 pm, snacking on suet.
We believe it’s a Pine Warbler. I have posted at
http://www.carolblackardphotography.com/whats-new/?/
 Be patient - may
take a bit to load since there are a lot of Brazil pictures on that page.

So, please confirm for me. Also, note the bill. And male? Currently magpies are
hogging the feeder. If it stays around I’ll repost.

[cobirds] Weldona/Ft. Morgan CBC

2015-12-16 Thread William H Kaempfer
John Vanderpoel, Andy Cowell and I headed to Morgan County this morning for the
Weldona/Ft. Morgan Christmas Bird Count. The count had been scheduled for
Tuesday, but if I'm going to cancel CU's final exams for the day you can be
sure I'm going to ask count compiler Bruce Bosley to postpone the CBC!

We headed out for a leisurely start in our block at about 8:45 (passing some
nasty looking goings on along I-76) and were welcomed to a beautiful sunny (if
cold) and mostly calm day. Our block starts at Long Bridge-the CO 144 bridge
over the South Platte between Ft. Morgan and Weldona. Right after getting out
of the car we heard an Eastern Screech Owl calling like crazy along the river.
Eastern Bluebirds were in the swampy bottom lands west of the road and the
general sparrow flock included a Lincoln's Sparrow. Up the hill side in a
forested seep Andy found a (red) Fox Sparrow. Birds were feeding actively
after what was probably an unpleasant day for them on Tuesday.

Moving on into the Weldona area we had a Brown-headed Cowbird in a feedlot
blackbird flock, a Pine Siskin in a roadside sparrow/finch flock and a Merlin.
There were also about 2 dozen Wild Turkeys in the corn fields around town. We
next visited a hunting lodge along the Platte that Bruce gets us into after the
hunters have left. It was really active, but mainly with more of the same
except for a few addition duck species among the several hundred Mallards. We
also had a Mourning Dove and Cooper's Hawk there.

Finally on our way home we stopped at Jackson Lake State Park since it is only
about 10 minutes from Weldona. There we had a Long-eared Owl and a
Yellow-rumped Warbler.

[cobirds] Douglas Reservoir - Larimer County

2015-12-16 Thread Andrew Bankert
I tried to find some count week birds for the Fort Collins CBC in case some
of the open water freezes up later in the week. I was surprised to find
two birds that have never been reported on the Fort Collins CBC before.
One of them was one a continuing Bonaparte's Gull which has been around for
a while and we were hoping would stick around until Saturday. The second
bird was a sleeping Red-necked Grebe. Both were observed from the western
side of the lake near the boat ramp. I think I have identifiable photos of
the grebe, but it had its head tucked for as long as I watched it. Other
birds that are uncommon on the Ft. Collins CBC were Western and Pied-billed
Grebe and Thayer's Gull.

I also checked out the north side of Horsetooth Reservoir and the only
interesting bird was a female Hooded Merganser. College Lake was almost
completely frozen, which could be why there was a Hooded Merganser on
Horsetooth.

Good Birding!

Birders,
Rosy-Finches, all 3 species, are present in my yard. They are alternating
between the back and front yards. If someone wants directions, please
email privately. My guess is they will come and go during the day.
The street is plowed but space is limited.
