[cobirds] Hotchkiss CBC

2016-01-04 Thread Jason Beason
Highlights were first Black Phoebe ever for the this CBC, 2 Red-naped
Sapsuckers, 1 Common Grackle, and all three species of rosy-finches. I am
waiting for report from one group but 70 species reported so far. Black
Phoebe was at Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery and both Red-naped
Sapsuckers were at Crawford Cemetery. Rosy-finches were at private feeder
at west end of circle.

We had a great group of folks helping out and huge thanks to everyone for
getting out and counting!

[cobirds] Larimer county --- TWO AMERICAN WOODCOCKs, 1/4/2016

2016-01-04 Thread 'Mark Peterson' via Colorado Birds

Hi COBirders,
I just got of the phone with Cole Wild and he and Heater Wild had just finished
viewing the previously reported AMERICAN WOODCOCK and were headed out when they
came across another WOODCOCK downstream.  I believe Heather videoed the second
bird and then they walked back up to verify the first bird was still there and
it was still siting in the same location.
Pretty amazing and great find to all the original finders of these hard to
detect species! -Mark Peterson

[cobirds] Barr Lake Christmas Bird Count, adams and Weld Counties

2016-01-04 Thread Charles Hundertmark
33 volunteers fanned out from the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Environment
Education Center Sunday for the Barr Lake Christmas Bird Count Sunday. Most
standing water was frozen reducing numbers of waterfowl. Despite overall low
waterfowl numbers, one Greater White-fronted Goose was found in a flock of
grazing white-cheeked geese. Also found were four flying Snow Geese.Though
ducks were few, they included 6 Hooded Mergansers on the South Platte.

Firsts for the count were a Lesser Black-backed Gull and Peregrine Falcon.
Say’s Phoebes (2 or 3) also put in an appearance for a second year and a
White-throated Sparrow appeared for only the fourth time on the count.
Great-tailed Grackles at 3519 broke the previous high by more than 6 times.
Notably absent were Rough-legged Hawks.

Other highlights:
Merlin 6
Virginia Rail 1
Northern Shrike 4
Marsh Wren 2
Lapland Longspur 1
Brewer’s Blackbird 300
Great-tailed Grackle 3519

Thanks to Bird Conservancy of the Rockies for hosting the count and to all of
the volunteers.

[cobirds] Larimer County gulls this past weekend

2016-01-04 Thread quetzal65
About a thousand gulls were reported on Larimer County Christmas Bird Counts on
Jan 1. On Saturday, Jan 2, I visited the Larimer landfill for gull viewing
(check in at front gate for permission and parking instructions). Highlights
included an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, juvenile Glaucous Gull and a small
juvenile/first winter California Gull, plus some Herring Gulls and about a
hundred Ring-billed Gulls. Most interesting was a putative 4th cycle Cook Inlet
Gull (Glaucous-winged x American Herring), which in the field appeared as a
Herring when sitting, and a Thayer's in flight. Photos told a different tale.

On Sunday afternoon, 3 January 2016, I watched gulls assemble for the nocturnal
roost at Carter Lake's ice-free north end (fee area). Several hundred
Ring-billed Gulls were accompanied by a dozen American Herring Gulls (mostly
adults and a couple first-cycles), 4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (a large
first-cycle, a 3rd-cycle, 2 adults), 2 Glaucous (the juvenile and a magnificent
adult), 1 juvenile Thayer's and the small 1st-cycle California. Birds were
arriving from the south and the north. Telescope required at both sites (more
so at Carter Lake).

[cobirds] White-throated Swifts, Pueblo County

2016-01-04 Thread mar1...@juno.com
Yesterday afternoon (Sunday, 3 Jan), from 3:20 to 3:45pm, I watched 20+
White-throated Swifts gather below the dam at Pueblo Reservoir. The saga
continues!

For folks who would like to try for these birds, I find that the most reliable
time and place is about 3pm at the pool directly below the dam, on a warmish
day. They seem to gather here in the afternoon as they return from feeding
along the river and before they head to their roost in the cliff north of the
dam. I usually see them over the north end of the concrete portion of the dam.

This pool is reached by a gravel road off the small parking lot (known locally
as the Free Lot) near the south entrance station below the dam, on the south
side of the river.

No guarantees, of course. I don't know how weather and temperature affect their
flight patterns. The high temperature here yesterday was about 50 degrees, and
we seem to see them most reliably on warmer days.

Cheers,
Margie Joy

[cobirds] Denver (Urban) Christmas count (Denver, Arapahoe, Adams)

2016-01-04 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds

New Year's Day brought out a big contingent of birders who saw a record number
of species on the Denver (Urban) Christmas count. Its circle includes 10 miles
of the South Platte, Cherry Creek Reservoir, Rocky Mtn. Arsenal NWR, downtown
Denver, downtown Aurora, and more.

So far, we have 92 species -- surpassing the previous high of 91.

New species for the count include the Varied Thrush that Becky Campbell saw in
her yard, a Hermit Thrush that Paul Slingsby's group found along Cherry Creek,
and 2 Bonaparte's Gulls reported by Mary Cay Burger's group at Cherry Creek
reservoir.

Perhaps the most surprising: 5 Say's Phoebes in three different territories.

I don't have all the reports yet, so I can't report the total individuals seen.
Cherry Cr. Res. had 1000 Common Mergansers -- tracking the huge numbers seen in
the Denver CBC at Chatfield & Marston (at least 3800, I think). At the Arsenal
we found 15 Long-eared Owls (including one in the same grove with a Great
Horned & a Barn Owl -- interesting mixture). The Denver Zoo had its usual
contingent of Common Grackles. Apparently they congregate at the Bar-headed
Goose exhibit and never stray farther than 100 feet away until they leave for
the summer.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow in Brighton, Adams County

2016-01-04 Thread Douglas Kibbe

Those who remained for the compilation of the Barr Lake CBC know that a
White-throated Sparrow was reported from Brighton.Details on the location were
sketchy, however, as the area was adjacent to an active construction site and
road nomenclature unclear. The bird was first heard by Pablo Quezada, (proving
again that younger ears are better ears) as the team walked west along the new
road alignment for E. Southern Street which will connect Tower Road with S.
Telluride Street. The bird remained concealed in a dense hedgerow on the south
side of the new road alignment approximately 200 yards west of the junction of
Southern St. and Tower Road. We believe the bird (and dozens of house sparrows
and finches) is probably frequenting feeders along La Plata CT. on the north
side of the new alignment. These private feeders can be partially viewed from
the new road alignment but are screened by fencing on the north.Anyone visiting
the site would be advised to use caution in parking and walking since it is an
active highway construction area.
