2016-04-10 Thread 'William Fink' via Colorado Birds
Inspired by the Prothonotary I went to Crow Valley which was totally dead.
Murphy's Pasture had a few McCown's longspurs and Vesper sparrows,Say's phoebe
and Rock wren. Lower Latham and Beebe Draw devoid of shorebirds. The
Prothonotary was beautiful though! Bill Fink. Longmont

Observation end time: 14:15:00
Total observation time: 6.25 hours

Official Counter:Gary Rossmiller

Observers:Cyndy Johnson, Sharon Cobe, Steve Ford

Visitors:
Steve Ford and friend Susan. He had worked with Jason Beason many years
ago. Sharon Cobe stopped by mid-day. Cyndy Johnson was there for many
hours. All were of great assistance. Susan spotted the Swainson's. All had
scopes, another plus.

Weather:
Overcast turning to quite sunny. Winds calm to a B2 breeze. Wind direction
was variable from N, SE, E, ESE, NE. Barometer was virtually steady around
29.76". Temps from 12.2 C to 16.7 C. Horizons visible and becoming more
clear as the day progressed. Quite hot in the sun by days end.

Raptor Observations:
9am-10am MDT was excellent w 3 raptors including a Swainson's. Mid-day
local RT's were seen over west ridge, I-70 and Cabrini. 2 local TV's came
up close to the site then turned south a couple of times. The first 2
raptors were very low on east side. The Swainson's was eye level east side.
All other migrants were over west ridge.

Non-raptor Observations:
Very, very quiet. Robins, Magpies, Junco, Scrubjay, Meadowlark, just a few
Ravens, Violet Green Tree Swallow. Townsend heard. Trail was fairly busy
with mixed users. Close to a dozen deer above the gas station. Trail is
hard and dry.

Predictions:
Another Swainson's, maybe some raptors we haven't counted yet this year.

Dinosaur Ridge information may be found at:
http://www.birdconservancy.org/

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from Bird Conservancy of
the Rockies from about 9 AM to around 3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
>From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the south side of lot to hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on an
old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side of the
ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left, head through
the gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the crest of the

[cobirds] Black Phoebe at Sinton Pond, El Paso County

2016-04-10 Thread David Tonnessen
Hello Cobirders,
I biked to Sinton Pond at around 9:00 this morning, seeing the overcast
weather and how active the birds were. There were many more leaves on the
shrubs and trees than I remembered seeing just three days ago. The faint
sound of a calling phoebe drew me to the northwest corner of place, where I
spotted the *Black Phoebe, *very active, over the tiny pond (not the main
pond). I observed it and birded the rest of the area for the next 3 hours.
Once or twice it came out and would flycatch over the large pond, but
mostly it stuck to the smaller pond in the northwest corner. Though it had
been vocalizing for most of the time I was there, when I left around 12:00,
it was silent and mostly sitting still on its favored branch that stuck out
from the middle of the pond.
The only other bird of note was a *Gray Catbird, *likely the one that's
been wintering there, hanging out in the same spot as the phoebe.

[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow - Mesa County

2016-04-10 Thread Mike Henwood
Mark Peterson found the *Golden-crowned Sparrow* on Sat. morning (4-9-16)
that had been reported in Snooks Bottom, which is just across the river
from the Fruita Section of the James M. Robb - Colorado State Park.
Yesterday evening after the CFO Board meeting held in Fruita, a number of
the Board Members, with Mark's help, were able to get good looks of the
Golden-crowned Sparrow. The first year Golden-crowned Sparrow was
associating with a group of White-crowned Sparrows. It is a little larger
than the White-crowned Sparrows with a little different profile. The lemon
patch on the forehead is distinctive, but not the first thing you notice.

[cobirds] CSUFO & DFO Boreal Owl Trip

2016-04-10 Thread Andrew Bankert
Today the Colorado State University Field Ornithologists led a trip with
the Denver Field Ornithologists in search of Boreal Owls up Cameron Pass
(Jackson County). Luckily, meeting on the CSU Campus around 2 PM put us in
a perfect place to make a short (less than a mile) detour to see the
beautiful Prothonotary Warbler. We began to question whether anyone has
ever seen a Prothonotary Warbler and a Boreal Owl in the same day. A quick
stop at the Moose Visitor Center on the way up gave us great looks at
Cassin's Finches along with the other regulars.

A few hours before sundown our group of 22 began hiking at Cameron Pass to
get to our owl spot. Upon arrival we located a few potential nesting holes
and split up to watch each one as the sun went down. The wind and the snow
made listening difficult, but we eventually heard one (not at any of the
holes we located) and after some effort the whole group was able to get
excellent looks. Overall it was an awesome day with almost everyone
getting a life bird, and we did have some students who were new to birding
who got a great introduction to this amazing hobby.

Good Birding!
