[cobirds] More from Chatfield and vicinity 4/11

2016-04-11 Thread David Suddjian
Later in the morning I saw what was very likely the same 2* Eastern Phoebes*
along the west side (JeffCo) of Kingfisher Bridge. I checked the area near
the Plum Creek Picnic Area, but did not find any phoebes there...just lots
of mud

There were about 22 *Am. White Pelicans* at Chatfield Res, and at least 10
Franklin's Gulls, 1 *Am. Avocet *and 1 *Greater Yellowlegs* flying around,
1 *Osprey*, 4 *Eared Grebes *and 6 *Horned Grebes*. 1 *Northern Harrier *along
the road to Plum Creek Nature Area. A moderate assortment of ducks were
mostly in the area between the marina and the North Boat Launch.

A *Burrowing Owl *was in the southern part of the prairie dog town near the
eastern entrance to Chatfield. And 1 *Burrowing Owl* was along Roxborough
Road (CR 3) at 1.3 miles south of Titan Road. This area formerly had a
large prairie dog colony (and more owls), but today and on a prior visit a
couple weeks ago I did not see any prairie dogs here at all. Have they been
removed in advance of the pending development? Or have I gone deaf and
blind? (or both)

Another *Vesper Sparrow* was at Hildebrand Ranch Park. Waterfowl numbers
are much reduced at Hine Lake, but 1 *Greater Scaup* continued there today.

Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end time: 14:30:00
Total observation time: 6.5 hours

Official Counter:Joyce Commercon

Observers:Heather Jackson, Richard Cuellar

Visitors:
Only a handful of hikers came up to the site, but most seemed to show some
interest in the raptor watch.

Weather:
The day started out 100% overcast, gray and a bit chilly. The low
cloud-cover concealed the tops of the ridges to the west, with the clouds
just revealing a dusting of snow along the tops of those same ridges.
Visibility below the cloud ceiling was still very good, if a little hazy,
but soon improved to usual levels. Winds were variable, being early on from
the east, then switching to the southwest and west, then returning to come
from the east. Wind speeds were also variable but always mild from bft 0 to
2. Temperatures ranged from 9 to 11 C (48 to 52 F). After Noon MST, the
solid cloud mass slowly broke open allowing scattered patches of blue to
appear, making for a pleasant semi-sunny afternoon. Cloud-cover decreased
to 50% and nearly all snow atop the western ridges melted by the end of the
watch.

Raptor Observations:
Highlights of the day included an Osprey moving north over the west-side
valley as well as an afternoon migrant Prairie Falcon, headed steady north
over Rooney Valley. Also enjoyable was a nice view of a juvenile Cooper’s
Hawk migrant, which journeyed past relatively close and near eyelevel to
the east. The local Red-tailed Hawks, all four of them, were out and about
later in the day with quite a number of parabolic display flights, some
leg-dropping and at least one altercation between the two pairs. One of the
local Rooney Valley pair had a successful hunt in the afternoon; it was
seen headed south, low in the valley, carrying what was likely a small
rodent. A local, female American Kestrel also was spotted on the west side
of the Ridge. Overall, today’s migrants passed equally on either side of
the Ridge; however, early in the morning they appeared to favor the east
side somewhat. Average height-of-flight increased slightly as the day
warmed.

Non-raptor Observations:
In the early morning, a Great Blue Heron flew south over the HawkWatch
site; (likely) the same heron was seen not long afterward returning north
over Rooney Valley. About 20 elk were spotted on Bare Slope (east of
Cabrini Shrine). At least one elk was seen on the east flank of Dinosaur
Ridge below the HawkWatch site. Also seen or heard were Bushtit, Spotted
Towhee, Townsend’s Solitaire, American Robin, Western Meadowlark,
Black-billed Magpie, American Crow, Common Raven, Mountain Chickadee (a
pair), House Finch, White-throated Swift, and Violet-green Swallow.

[cobirds] Glenmere Park Rebounding? [Greeley, Weld]

2016-04-11 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

About two or three years ago the abundant rookery here was thriving 80-100
birds on nests--the following week every one of them were gone
mysteriously. The last two years for most part no nesting birds.

Sunday I visited (hoping) and found a Black-crowned Night Heron

and a Snowy Egret
!
Hopefully more to follow. Plenty of Great-tailed Grackle

(12+) along Weld CR 48 as well as Wilson's Snipe (6)--here are four

together. Along Beebe Draw Swainson's Hawk (6) here is one

and one other
.

I've seen multiple in Nunn-area as well. A pair chased a Great Horned Owl
from its roost at Behren's Lake--btw lake is full of water (and
waterfowl). Stood atop my car to get a peek at it ... :-)

Burrowing Owl population now up to three along Weld CR 33 (btw 98/100) here
is newlywed pair

and a current bachelor

.

Thanks

[cobirds] Barr Lake - Adams

2016-04-11 Thread JBreitsch - Denver
11 April 2016
Barr Lake - South side
Overcast, slightly breezy

American Avocets, Yellow-headed Blackbirds, seaweed dancing Western Grebe
pairs, and many other signs of spring abounded at Barr this morning. I'm
just here to report that the previously located Harris's Sparrow is still
present in the same location as a week or so ago. If you're familiar with
the back side of Barr, there is a small boardwalk and gazebo (not the
larger, well known one farther east). The entrance to this area is just
north of the bridge on the trail in the area of the Obrian canal. On the
opposite side of the trail from the entrance to the small boardwalk is a
downed tree and scrubby looking area that seems perfect for sparrows and
wrens. This is where the Harris's has been. The first time I went by
there this morning I had two Song Sparrows and two Black-capped Chickadees
and nothing else. Ten minutes later, I had multiple Song Sparrows,
White-crowned Sparrows, and the Harris's Sparrow. At one point, the
Harris's flew west to a cottonwood tree with a large dirt mound next to it.
So if you don't see anyone there, you may just want to wait a few minutes.

The Harris's was quiet last week, but was chirping away today. He even
managed to sing to me a few times. I know what you're thinking. He was
singing an unrequited love song to the non existent female Harris's
Sparrows he was hoping to find. But hey, I'm a sad and lonely old man, and
if I say he was singing for my benefit, do you really want to take that
away from me? I tried to get a video of the song, but only managed a few
call notes instead. Such is life.

Map of Barr Lake. If you look at the bottom of the water, you will see the
canal and the area the bird is at.
