Re: [cobirds] Clark's Nutcrackers (low el.) BW Hawk, Boulder 9/16

2016-09-20 Thread Eric DeFonso
Speaking of low elevation Clark's Nutcrackers, I had a group of 6 of them
fly overhead, downhill no less, at White Ranch Open Space in Jefferson
County, on Sunday morning while I was trail running. I was probably around
6400 ft at the time, still in pondo land.

RE: [cobirds] Re: Parasitic Jaeger- Cherry Creek SP

2016-09-20 Thread Gregg Goodrich
Ann Troth and I were also thrilled to find the Parasitic Jaeger still chasing
gulls at Cherry Creek this morning. Thanks Glenn for finding this amazing bird.

Ann and I just got back from a houseboating/kayaking trip to Lake Powell. We
also had a Parasitic Jaeger on Powell about 40 miles up river from Bullfrog.
That is in SW Utah. So it does seem to be a good year for the species.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding at Chico Basin Ranch update 9/20/16

2016-09-20 Thread lmkoitsch
Hiya!

Today we banded our 900th bird for the fall banding season here at Chico
Basin Ranch (fee area). It was a *Blue Jay*! Haha now I know some of you
were thinking that it might be a *Brown Thrasher* as we have managed to
catch more of them than I, at least, ever thought possible. In fact, we're
up to 48 newly banded Brown Thrashers this season, but who's counting. ;)

Another highlight today was a stunning *White-eyed Vireo*, a bird that we
have not banded here in the fall since 2012. This was the second vireo
that's usually considered a more 'eastern' bird, the first being the*
Bell's Vireo*, that we've caught and banded this season. And after the
*Prothonotary
Warbler*and the* Canada Warbler*and the *Magnolia Warbler*, you'd
think we'd run out of awesome birds down here at the Ranch, but you just
never know what's going to turn up next!

Also of note, we banded two more *Cooper's Hawks* today, bringing our total
count for accipiters this season up to four.

We're open every day through October 1st. Please note that this week there
are large school groups scheduled on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Hope to see you out on the Ranch!

2016-09-20 Thread Wayne Wathen
I was happy to see that the Parasitic Jaeger is still at Cherry Creek SP this
morning at least from about 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. From a long distance, it looks
pretty plain to my old eyes, until it flashes its wings. Then cool.

The Parasitic Jagger was still at Cherry Creek State Park this morning. Jamie
Simo and I observed it from several vantage points today from about 10 am - 12.
It mostly hung out in the middle of the lake though flew around hassling Gulls
a few times.

Great photos Glenn, better then the ones I got at Chatfield. Now I see a
posting that three have been seen at Jumbo, so maybe the one I saw was
different and we are having a "jaeger invasion"? That would be awesome. Here I
am planing a trip to
San Diego and the Imperil Valley this December and I was hoping to see my
first Jaeger there in California, I have now seen my first in land locked
Colorado! Amazing. Truly the joys of birding, you just don't know what will
show up.

[cobirds] First Creek Trail - Denver

2016-09-20 Thread JBreitsch - Denver
20 September 2016
Mostly cloudy day, fairly cool

On Sunday there were multiple harriers along the trail, today none. I did
see Red-tailed Hawks and a Cooper's Hawk to make up for it. For sparrows,
the other day it was almost all Vesper's. Today, there were just two of
those, but I had White-crowned, Clay-colored, Lark, Lincoln's Song and
Chipping. The only warblers were Wilson's and Orange-crowned (just one).
Everything else was the usual birds except for a nice Gray Catbird
skulking about towards the Buckley Road end. A nice walk before work.

[cobirds] Upcoming CFO Field Trip

2016-09-20 Thread William H Kaempfer
CFO Members,

Here is an upcoming CFO Trip that might be of interest to you:

Sprague's, Le Conte's, and more
Yuma County and beyond - Saturday, Oct 8, 2016 6:00 AM - Sunday, Oct 9, 2016
9:00 PM
SAVE THE DATE! This trip is timed so as to maximize our chances for two
Colorado desiderata: Sprague's Pipit and Le Conte's Sparrow. We'll start at the
Fox Ranch for the sparrows, then inch ever closer to Kansas for the pipits.

Limit 12 participants; CFO members only.

Here are additional details for this trip.

1. The trip is limited to 12 CFO member participants and 3 cars. I will
organize all participants into shared rides once we have the participants. The
three cars on the trip will then meet at a designated spot early on Saturday,
October 8th to proceed out east for some great birding.

2. Our destinations will include the private Fox Ranch (TNC) where we will
explore for sparrows and other migrants including a reasonable shot for a
glimpse of Le Conte’s Sparrow. Then on to the Hale area to try for Sprague’s
Pipits at “Pipit Hill”. Finally we will continue to Wray where we will spend
Saturday night. As time permits in Wray we will visit Stalker Pond, the Fish
Hatchery and some or the surrounding sand sage country.

3. My plan is to stay that night at the Cobblestone Inn in Wray and enjoy
dinner at 4th and Main, a fun place for a group dinner in the heart of downtown
Wray (so to speak).

4. Sunday we will depart as soon as the breakfast schedule allows us and
head into….Nebraska! I have come to love a couple of spots in SW Nebraska—Rock
Creek State Recreation Area and Rock Creek State Fish Hatchery and I think you
will find the birding great there, too. I hope not to jinx anything, but I
suspect all of the participants from last year’s trip are still thinking about
the 55 Greater Prairie Chickens that flushed across the road right in front of
us (flushed by a Northern Harrier, not by us, I should add).

5. From the Rock Creek area we will work our way back home with stops
dictated by recent sightings.

If you are interested in joining John Vanderpoel, my co-leader, and me, please
reply by email.
