[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow & late Green-tailed Towhee - Marjorie Perry NP (Arapahoe)

2016-11-14 Thread Jared Del Rosso
At the very end of my walk this at Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve (Arapahoe
Co.) this afternoon, I heard then briefly saw a White-throated Sparrow
along the High Line Canal on the eastern edge of the preserve. This is the
first of this sparrow that I've seen in my three-mile home circle in the
west Centennial area.

Just a bit further east, I heard some movement in the marsh along the
Greenwood Gulch Trail. I figured it was a mouse or vole that would stay
invisible under the cover of brush and reeds. Or maybe a Song Sparrow. But
I got a few glimpses of a late Green-tailed Towhee instead.

[cobirds] Re: Raptor Alley Field Trip Results

2016-11-14 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

For those hoping to see a Rough-legged Hawk on our Raptor Alley trip ...
"we did" ... :-) ... closer inspection of photos (below) shows one that we
saw along Weld CR 98 early on in trip. This was the bird atop telephone
pole that flew off to south as we approached closer (two poles away still)
to get better look.

Thank you all for coming!

[cobirds] Dilute-plumaged Merlin in Fort Collins

2016-11-14 Thread Jeff Birek
I found a very lightly-colored Merlin in City Park in Fort Collins. The
bird was perching in deciduous trees south and west of Club Tico. I have a
bad-quality digiscoped shot from about 9:30 this morning. The lightness of
the bird is accurate in the photo though! This is seemingly quite rare.

I hope someone else can get some better photos of this bird. I will be out
there later today with my big camera! Please let me know if you spot it. My
first thought when I saw it was that it was a Eurasian Collared-Dove but an
America Crow was very bothered by it and so I took another look!

It flew east and perched in trees by the playground when I had to leave.

Thanks!

PUEBLO COUNTY:
---November 14 update on Black-legged Kittiwake, thanks to Brandon Percival:
Still present today as of 7:38 AM at the same location. Pacific Loon also still
present today, west of West Fishing Road.
“A good number of people were able to see the bird today (including a visiting
birder from Tennessee), after the early morning sighting from West Fishing
Road, it spent the rest of the day in the State Wildlife Area, seen off the
middle parking looking west. It seems to hang out near the diving Common
and/or Pacific Loons. Looking for these diving loons, and looking at the gulls
near them, seems to be a good trick to find the kittiwake lately. I did a
quick count of all the people, who I know saw the bird so far, and that total
is 62 people at least. The bird has been around for 15 days (since 30
October), though missing for 4 days last weekend, when no one saw it. A good
number of Common Loons were seen today, from both West Fishing Road and in the
SWA. The Pacific Loon finally showed up late in the day, in the SWA.”
---On November 3, a Red-necked Grebe was reported by Brandon Percival and Kara
Carragher at Sailboard Launch Area of Pueblo Reservoir.

SUMMIT COUNTY:
---On November 13, a probable Pacific Loon was viewed from Giberson Bay at
Dillion Reservoir by Jack Bushing.

WELD COUNTY:
---On November 5, a Surf Scoter (female) was reported by

[cobirds] Black-legged Kittiwake -- Day 16

2016-11-14 Thread Brandon Percival

Kittiwake is currently present (as of 7:38am) at the State Wildlife Area on
the North west side of Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo County. Seen from the
middle parking lot of the three looking west. Good luck to anyone coming
to try for it today, I know of at least one person coming today, so
hopefully this update is helpful. Pacific Loon is west of West Fishing
Road as well.
