[cobirds] Red-breasted Sapsucker -- thanks Colorado birders and sapsucker neighbors

2017-12-28 Thread Jim Nelson
Nearly at the end of a holiday visit to Colorado to see family, I was lucky to
be in Colorado Springs for a less than 24-hour stay. We were in Estes Park the
rest of our visit as I read listserv posts and saw eBird Rare Bird Alerts for
the Red-breasted Sapsucker expecting the bird to disappear just as we made it
to Colorado Springs.

We got in too late on Wednesday to try for the bird. I saw reports from
Wednesday, so this morning during a 45-minute window I had available to try for
the bird before needing to check out from our motel and head to an appointment,
I arrived at Mirada Road with no birders in sight (bad sign?). I am usually
the kiss of death for unusual birds. I almost always miss the target when I go
in search of a bird that dozens of birders have seen over several days. So I
had low expectations for success today.

Three other birders arrived within a few minutes, none of whom had seen the
bird in previous tries, and we were wandering up and own Mirada looking for the
sapsucker with no success. The clock was ticking. My stroke of luck was to
stand in front of the house of a very nice woman (Carol, who Norm Lewis
mentioned yesterday) scanning various pines with my binoculars. Carol came out
her door, coffee cup in hand, and asked if I had seen the bird. When I said
"no," she told me to wait a minute and she would take me to where she was sure
it would be. She walked me back up Mirada where we gathered the other three
folks and entered the HOA's open space with Carol, her so, and (I believe)
daughter-in-law. And there was the bird. We all had great views and enjoyed
sharing the special experience.

I added a lifer (thanks to friendly Coloradans, birders and non-birders) and
made it back in time to check out and go to our appointment. Couldn't ask for
a better experience and a great end to our holiday visit as we fly back east
tomorrow.

Thanks David T. for the great find and all who helped me and other birders see
this great bird.

Re: Baikal Teal and Variable Hawk. Yeah, what's up with that? I'd add
Rufous-collared Sparrow to the list too. (Festering wounds...) Did y'all
know that there are records from the U.S. Rocky Mountains in 2017 of both
Variable Hawk and Rufous-collared Sparrow? I love vagrant traps up and down
the I-25 corridor as much as any of you, but I also wonder if there's a bit
of anti-I-25-vagrant-trap bias at play here.

I know! Tønnessen will find Colorado's first Orange-billed
Nightingale-Thrush! In the mountains. Of western Boulder County. At the CFO
convention in May 2018. C'mon, David, we're counting on you.

[cobirds] Snowy Owl YES

2017-12-28 Thread Gregg Goodrich
Thanks to David for the spot and Lisa for the post. We had given up and were
heading home when we saw Lisa’s post that David found it. About 30 Birders were
thrilled to see it.

It looked healthy. Lots of preening and it even cast a pellet while we watched
it in the scope. We saw a kestrel catch a mouse in the same area. So the prey
is there but so is the competition.

Hope it hangs on for lots of others to see.

Re: [cobirds] Re: Tønnessen's next?

2017-12-28 Thread Joe Roller
The topic of "what will be the next addition to the Colorado State List"
has been thoughtfully
covered in at least two articles over the years in Colorado Birds (nee'
Journal of the CFO).

If someone can post that article, I'm sure it would be of widespread
interest. As I recall, someone
predicted the Brown Booby and others predicted Sandwich and Sooty Tern. It
is fascinating reading.
Some of the most prominent predictions were Black Vulture (Yes) and Cactus
Wren (not yet).

I recall that a CFO goal was to make the articles searchable on line and
hope that is being worked on.
If not now, who could take the lead on this, among all of the keen CFO
members? Once the articles
are completely on line, one can read what Ted Floyd is referring to, as
well as the sightings of
Black-tailed Gnatcatcher with photo documentation.

Just to pique interest, Pileated Woodpecker is slowly breeding higher up
the Arkansas River and has
reached the middle of Kansas by now.

[cobirds] Pueblo PRAIRIE WARBLER continues 12/28

2017-12-28 Thread Brandon
Happy to report, the Lake Pueblo State Park, Pueblo County, Prairie
Warbler continues to survive the cold temperatures and the
Sharp-shinned Hawk, I saw it mid-morning to mid-day a couple of times.
Today was warmer, so it was out being cooperative, I couldn't find it
at all yesterday, when it was very cold. This bird has been present
since 5 Dec (at least), and I think this is the latest one ever in
Colorado so far (28 Dec). I don't think there is a January record of
this species for Colorado. I'm sure people will be looking on the 1st
and 2nd, and after.

Other stuff, I walked from Cottonwood Picnic Area to Valco Ponds
parking lot, and back this morning, it was a pleasant walk, the main
highlight was a Common Redpoll (calling low fly over) -- finally, I
must be the last person to see one in Colorado this year (my 350th
Colorado Year bird!) -- Thanks to everyone who helped me this year, I
hadn't reached this total in several years (and would not have,
without some very nice friends).

Other birds of note, were two Lincoln's Sparrows (which are like
common this winter in the Pueblo area), and a Say's Phoebe. I looked
in the area, the Northern Parula was seen on the Pueblo Reservoir CBC,
and as expected, I didn't find it.

Good birding and Happy New Year almost,

I agree with Ira. Mute Swan shows up each year in different configurations.
However David's next bird will be an El Paso Co. animal. Possibly Black-backed
Woodpecker, Northern Hawk Owl, or Elegant Tern. David is eager, astute and

[cobirds] Turnover at Valmont Reservoir, Boulder County, Dec. 27

2017-12-28 Thread Ted Floyd
Hey, all. Andrew Floyd and I ventured out to the Valmont Reservoir complex,
Boulder County, yesterday evening, Wed., Dec. 27. What a change from 48
hours earlier. With strong winds, warmth, and hazy sunshine yesterday, the
birds at Valmont were strikingly different. First off, a *tundra swan* was
flying around out there, the peripatetic "Valmont swan," I suspect. We also
saw two kinds of *Iceland gulls:* an adult *thayeri* (more or less expected
here in winter) and an immature *kumlieni* (unusual in Colorado). In the
old days, like, last winter, we called the former "Thayer gull" and the
latter "Iceland gull." Now they are all Iceland gulls. And we found a
first-cycle *lesser black-backed gull,* but no adults (on Christmas day, we
saw two adults). The other recent goodies--the loons and red-necked
grebes--eluded us.

[cobirds] Red Rocks Trading Post Feeders 12/23 + RR etiquette

2017-12-28 Thread Chip Clouse
COBirders,
Sorry for the late post. I led a small group from the Front Range Birding
Co up to see what was visiting the feeders last Saturday. I visited Friday
morning to make sure there was seed and revisited early Sat as well. FYI:
the back porch is under construction and was roped off with no access.
We saw 5 different forms of Dark-eyed Junco (no white-winged), Black-capped
Chickadees (no Mountain), Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches,
Woodhouse's Scrub-Jays, Black-billed Magpies, House Finches, 1 - Flicker, 1
- Spotted Towhee, 1 - Townsend's Solitaire, and American Kestrels. All but
the last two were coming in to the no-mess Patio Blend I put out.
That brings me to the etiquette part. Upon arrival I found some seed
already in the tray feeder. This looked like a good-quality mix but had
shells and would certainly sprout. I was told by employees of the Trading
Post/CO Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum that we are welcome to put out
seed but only no-mess mixes that won't sprout or build up shells. I was
also told that a lot of birders have been "shushing" other visitors that
have as much of a right to be there as we do. I would make that a
teachable moment and try to share the birds with the people visiting.
There is nothing like a scope view to open someone's eyes - literally!
So Mary Cay sent out an email a week or two ago looking for volunteers to
help put out no mess seed. I encourage others to volunteer but please, if
you bring up seed outside of this group, please bring just sunflower chips,
hulled millet or a no-mess blend.

Good birding,

All,

David T. of Red-breasted Sapsucker fame has relocated the Snowy Owl. It can be

[cobirds] Pygmy Nuthatch, White-throated Sparrow, and Goose ID Help - Arapahoe

2017-12-28 Thread Jared Del Rosso
This morning (12/28), I took my new dog Andre for a walk along the High
Line Canal Trail between Three Ponds Park and Quincy Ave. in Arapahoe Co.,
in part to see what was around ahead of Monday's Denver (Urban) CBC. We had
a single Pygmy Nuthatch in a very bird section of Dahlia Hollow Park. Not
far from the park, just off the canal, we had a White-throated Sparrow.

Before we even got to the trail, we spotted a white goose amid Canadas and
Cacklings at St. Mary Academy along University Ave in Cherry Hills Village.
I couldn't get a great look at the bird, which kept its head down or behind
other geese most of the time I watched it (before the flock flew off). The
photos aren't great, but perhaps someone with a more robust sense of Snow
and Ross's geese could provide some input? I'm leaning Ross's, given the
small size of the goose, the seemingly rounder head, and the (possibly??)
straighter border at the base of the bill, but I don't have a lot of
experience with these geese.

I looked for the bird again on the way home, but as I drove past the
school, a woman and a collie on official "goose patrol" were chasing the
geese off of the school's property.

[cobirds] Greeley CBC Fun This Saturday [Weld]

2017-12-28 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

Some folks on the Greeley CBC (O Street Section) will have fun counting and
sifting through the ENORMOUS mixed goose flock I saw on Sunday:

   -

http://coloradobirder.club/m/photos/browse/album/O-Street-Gravel-Ponds-Greeley/

I saw plenty of Canada, Cackling, Snow, Ross's and Greater White-fronted
Goose--could be Brant hidden in there but I could not find one.

First seven photos show entire flock.

Thanks Gary Lefko, Nunn
