re: [cobirds] Speaking of New World Vultures...

2018-07-13 Thread Karl Stecher Jr.
The great number of motorboats on Cherry Creek reservoir chase the white
pelicans away on weekends.
As for the turkey vultures...I almost never see any except in migration, even
doing a lot of driving, most frequent route Aurora to Parker along Parker Road.
I have only seen two individuals this summer.

Subject: [cobirds] Speaking of New World Vultures...

Greetings COBIRDers:

This week's posting of the California condor has spurred me to finally ask a
question: has anyone else noticed that there seem to be very few turkey
vultures in the Denver Metro area this summer? My normal travels take me from
about Castle Rock up to Loveland, and out to the Raptor Education Foundation
near Barr Lake..I think I can count on my two hands, the number of vultures
I've seen since March.

Meanwhile, I've seen easily triple the typical number of American white
pelicans up in the air over Barr Lake this year, and in the surrounding skies,
almost every morning when I arrive at work. Not raptors, but just as beautiful
to behold.

Comments and opinions are most welcome!

[cobirds] Common Gallinule

2018-07-13 Thread Ken & Christie Pals
Cobirders,

The Larimer County Running Deer Nature Area Common Gallinule was observed
this morning at 7:20 a.m. Two brief glimpses given to me and Dan Brook.
Given like a "gift." The bird was seen SSW of the "arrow" or SSE from the
traditional spot where most people have been seeing the bird. My tip would
be to scan any opening in the cattails and tule bulrushes there.

We also had a Green Heron fly over.

[cobirds] Calliope Hummingbirds, Colo Spgs, Thurs

2018-07-13 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

Me, too. Saw FOS Calliope Hummingbirds last night (7/12), male and female.
This morning I had two males and female at the same time.
Also FOS Rufous Hummingbird male 7/12. We often see each of these around the
4th, so a little later this year.

It's been so hot that our beloved Turkey Vultures, like humans, have been
hanging out wherever they can cool off -

[cobirds] Winter Wren - Brainard Lake - Boulder County

2018-07-13 Thread Dan Zmolek
Really nice conditions today up there around Long Lake. Many highlights - but
the best was a singing Winter Wren on the Jean Lunning trail. We will soon
have an ebird list out with more details. You can see quality video of the
bird here:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BlL9gn8jmuY/

We also heard Three-toed woodpeckers drumming, many newly fledged young of
various species. And a perfect wildflower display.

Directions : Follow the trail as it it winds along south of Long Lake until
you reach the west end of the Lake - we last heard it near the long boardwalk
in that area (just SW of Long Lake)

Good Birding

[cobirds] Hummingbirds at Audubon Nature Center

2018-07-13 Thread 'Bea Weaver' via Colorado Birds
Yesterday all four Colorado hummingbird species were seen at the Nature Center
in Waterton Canyon. Both the Rufous and Calliope males were present plus our
two breeders: Broad-tailed and Black-chinned Hummingbirds. The immatures are
here too, making their IDs difficult if not often impossible. Most action is
in the native plant garden behind the Nature Center under the last tree. Last
year’s site has some small feeders, but raccoons were a problem here earlier,
so some feeders were moved. Humans have been a problem also, stealing three
large feeders and accessories; Nature Center volunteers donated replacements.

[cobirds] Calliopes in Custer County

2018-07-13 Thread Leon Bright
We saw our first Calliope at our cabin in the Sangre de Cristo range about
the 4th of this month. Since then they have steadily increased in number.
When we left on Wednesday there were at least four at our feeders. This
season may produce the highest number we have seen in 30 years of feeding
them there.
