2019-01-15 Thread Gary Brower
All,

Several questions, then, for those who know about (or consider) these things .
. . .

1) Was Mexican Duck made a separate species in the last go-around? I can’t
remember. If so, then it’s Life Bird for me — I’ll head to CCSP tomorrow.
2) If it’s a Mottled Duck, it’s a Life Bird for me — I’ll head to CCSP
tomorrow.
3) If it’s a Mottled x Mexican hybrid . . . . how does one “count” that?

Thanks!

2019-01-15 Thread Scott Somershoe
All,
Sorry for not posting sooner. Birding happened today.

Anyway, this bird on first blush looks like a Mottled Duck to a bunch of us.
However the broad white line on the leading edge and trailing edge of the
speculum eliminates Mottled. It also doesn’t totally match Mexican duck (not
that I’ve seen one to my knowledge). I managed to study the bird for a while
this morning and Ben’s photos are great! Way better than mine. I did see a
couple random green feathers at the base of the tail as well. Weird.

According to waterfowl guru Steve Mlodinow, he thinks it may be a mottled x
Mexican hybrid. I’ll leave a final decision to those smarter than me! Really
interesting bird regardless. As I say, there’s always more to learn.

[cobirds] Colorado Rare Bird Alert - Tuesday, January 15, 2019

2019-01-15 Thread 'Allison Hilf' via Colorado Birds

Date: January 15, 2019
Compiler: Allison Hilf, ah...@me.com
E-mail: RBA AT cobirds.org

This is the Colorado Rare Bird Alert for Tuesday, January 15, sponsored by
Denver Field Ornithologists.

Rare, out of place and out of season species include:
(*) indicates new information on this species;
CAPITAL LETTERS are used for very rare species, as listed by the Colorado Bird
Records Committee.

Barnacle Goose/Pink-Footed Goose - Weld County
Note, both birds are extremely rare vagrants to Eastern North America; almost
unheard of in Western North America. Pink-footed Goose is very rare in
captivity; whereas Barnacle Goose is somewhat common in private
agriculturalists collections.

Populations of both of these geese are increasing in their breeding habitat,
with about twice as many Barnacle than Pink-footed Goose. Both birds are also
expanding north over the top of Greenland and could end up in NE Canada,
putting them close to Goose populations that winter in the Great Plains. Steve
Mlodinow posted a thorough summary on previous sightings and detailed rationale
for the Colorado Bird Records Committee to ponder. Paul Hurtado also suggested
the following pdf from ABA Birding Magazine about Greenland Geese:
http://publications.aba.org/birding_archive_files/v40n3p46.pdf

There is no guarantee either of these is a wild bird and/or that either will be
accepted by the CBRC; but this might be your only chance to see them in CO.

Both birds were last reported yesterday (Dec 14) at Frederick Lake (Milavec
Reservoir) & Recreation Area in Frederick. The Pink-footed was reported until
noon; the Barnacle was reported as late as 5pm.

Observers have been diligent in reporting sightings on CObirds; please keep
reporting all sightings on CObirds and check for any location updates.
