[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chatfield, 5/11/19

2019-05-11 Thread Meredith McBurney
Not as busy as yesterday, but plenty to keep us going and lots of species.
Best bird of the day was the first Yellow Warbler of the year that is on
our longevity chart - 2560-93331 was banded as an adult in 2013, so he is
at least 8 years old; we have caught him every year. Here's the breakdown
of today's 61 new birds:

Dusky Flycatcher 5
Hammond's Flycatcher 1
Black-capped Chickadee 2 new, 1 banded 2017
White-breasted Nuthatch 1
House Wren 1
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 7 (One of many species that appears to have had a
great year)
Hermit Thrush 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 3
Virginia's Warbler 2
Yellow Warbler 2 new, 1 banded 2013, 1 banded 2015
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 4
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon 22
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Intergrade 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 1
Spotted Towhee 1 new, 1 banded 2018
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Bullock's Oriole 1 (FOS)

We will be open daily, WEATHER PERMITTING, through May 31, except for
Memorial Day. We are opening nets at 6:30, and most days will have birds
back at the station by 7:15. We aim to close by noon most days, earlier if
it is very hot, very cold, or very windy. Registration is required for all
weekend visitors; see the Denver Audubon website to sign up. Individuals
may visit weekdays without registering before the school groups arrive,
which is usually around 10 a.m.

Come visit!

[cobirds] Boulder Mt Park and other

2019-05-11 Thread JohnT
CO-birders:
For May 11th, Sat. - mostly shrub-land areas along
riparian corridors in Boulder Mountain Park. All sightings are within
Boulder County.

Birds of special interest in CAPS

Key:

G = Gregory Canyon and feeder trails + lower Flagstaff Mt. Trail
SK = Skunk Creek and feeder trails
BC = Bear Creek and Bear Canyon trails
SAW = Sawhills \ Walden Ponds
LOU = Louisville

Birds of note:

Cooper's hawk - 4 - G, SK
Turkey vulture - 6 - G
Red tailed hawk - 1 - SK
Great horned owl - 1 - BC - great horned owl nest site in Bear Canyon,
previous site was a traditional prairie falcon nest site; 1 immature in
nest site
Broad tailed hummingbird - 40+ - G, SK, BC - all males, flight displays,
chases
Say's phoebe - 1- BC
Plumbeous vireo - 1 - BC
Scrub jay - 1 - SK - lower skunk creek, traditional area to see scrub jays
year round
Bushtit - 30+ - G, SK, BC - bushtits have become common throughout Boulder
County year round
House wren - 15 - G, SK, BC - not in numbers as high as last year; anyone
else notice this?
Bluegray gnatcatcher - 16 - G, SK, BC - high concentrations at skunk creek
Gray catbird - 1 - SK
Orange crowned warbler - 6 - G, SK, BC - almost always associated with
blooming wild plum. Wild plum is already past peak bloom in most areas
Virginia's warbler - 4 - G, SK, BC
Audubon's warbler - 3 - SK, BC
MacGillivray's warbler - 7 - G, SK, BC - all males
Yellow warbler - 3 - SAW
OVENBIRD - 1 - BC - male singing; traditional area up Bear Creek where the
trail crosses over Bear Creek and heads uphill; mixed evergreen and shrub
habitat; although not uncommon, its interesting to note
certain sections along the Mesa Trail have singing
ovenbirds from mid-May through the 1st week in August.
Yellow breasted chat - 8 - G, SK, BC
Spotted towhee - 55+ - G, SK, BC - all males; singing, chases, fights
Green tailed towhee - 1 - SK
Chipping sparrow - 100+ - LOU - migratory flocks
Vesper sparrow - 10 - SK, LOU - mostly Louisville
Lazuli bunting - 6 - SK, BC
Bullock's oriole - 4 - G, SK - all males
Red crossbill - 15 - BC
Black headed grosbeak - 8 - G, SK, BC

Other notes:
Willet - 14 - in Louisville, flyover, Thursday evening
Snowy egret - 1 - Louisville - 1st time I've seen one in Louisville -
Warembourg Pond
White faced ibis - 25 - Sawhills, flyover
Sora - 1 - Sawhills - calling

The funniest thing I saw today was a house wren attacking a MacGillivray's
warbler. Or maybe not so funny for the warbler.

For Boulder data counts: visuals on mule deer, raccoon, coyote, fox
squirrel, pine squirrel, chipmunk ssp, black tailed prairie dog, eastern
cottontail, bullsnake

Wildflower bloom seems slow and stunted this year, probably due to the
weather, which is limiting the insects, which is limiting the birds (?). A
guess. I'm seeing less neo-tropicals this year compared to last year at the
same time.

Cheers,John Tumasonis (aka: John T), Louisville CO

Thx Sam - I already corrected it today when it was posted as “continued”.

I’m not sure why on Thursday it originally posted without your name (there was
no name on report when I checked before I had gone to bed). Perhaps e-bird
made error, or you might want to check your settings and see if they are
generally public? It shows up now, but originally didn’t on Thur.

[cobirds] Wheat Ridge Greenbelt Warblers Jefferson Cty

2019-05-11 Thread Tammy and Curt CAMPBELL
Did a 4 hour loop today from the Youngfield parking lot sifting through
Yellow-rumps the entire time. North of Clear Creek about midway of West lake
was a Black-throated Gray Warbler. South of Prospect Park and the creek was
another Black-throated and a Townsend's Warbler, both in the same small
juniper. On the southeast corner of West lake there was a Tennessee Warbler.
From now on I'm always gonna carry a heavy camera with a dead battery, the only
time I saw the Pink-footed Goose my battery was dead then too.

Hey everyone,

I'm removing the word "possible" from this post and saying that it was, in
fact, a Field Sparrow.
Here's the ebird list from this morning:

[cobirds] Mt Falcon - Jefferson County

2019-05-11 Thread John Breitsch
Since we are right smack in the middle of migration, and this is Spring
Count weekend, I decided to be completely different and go to the foothills
and see which breeders had returned. I ended up with 41 species. A
partial list includes, Dusky Grouse, Wild Turkey, Common Poorwill, Canyon
Wren, Evening Grosbeak, Black-headed Grosbeak, Western Tanager, Spotted and
Green-tailed Towhees, Virginia's Warbler, and some Yellow-rumped Warblers.

I walked the Tower Trail and came back on the Parmalee Trail. DFO trip
along the same route next week.

[cobirds] EASTERN TOWHEE, Tamarack SWA, Logan County

2019-05-11 Thread cteuton
This morning, Dan and I stopped by the west side of Tamarack SWA. We heard a
towhee song that was not typical for Spotted Towhee. The singer was found high
in the trees, and we identified him as an EASTERN TOWHEE by his song and wing
pattern, which showed an absence of scapular spotting, with white primary
bases. A couple of "back of the camera" shots are on the ebird list below.

https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S56131878

We also saw a male Blackpoll Warbler amongst many Myrtle type Yellow-rumps at
Red Lion SWA (also in Logan county). The birds were feeding in weedy material
wedged in the creek that crosses under the road there, and low in bushes/trees
at the edge of the creek.

Hello all,

Congratulations to Cathy for the sighting of a female Purple Martin at Barr
Lake. A great record and always a nice find in eastern Colorado. On April 29,
1976, I saw a beautiful male Purple Martin along the east side of Barr Lake, on
a cold, cloudy day and mixed in with hundreds of other swallows. I have not
entered most of my old records into e-Bird, so it won’t show up there. I may
have submitted the record to the CFO Records Committee, but I am not sure.

[cobirds] Fall out of Gray Flycatchers in Canon City Friday

2019-05-11 Thread SeEttaM
The socked in weather with rain and snow brought a lot of migrating Gray
Flycatchers down in Canon City. I saw 25 of them during a one mile walk on
the Canon City Riverwalk. A similar Gray Flycatcher fall out occurred
several years due to weather. I got a couple of nice pics of Gray
Flycatchers which I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog
.
Fyi, I am especially proud of these as I am sporting a brace on my left
wrist due to a compound fracture 3 weeks ago which has challenged my
photography skills.
