[cobirds] Lewis WP Stony Pass Road (Jefferson)

2019-06-20 Thread W. Robert Shade III
This afternoon Micki and I were able to find a pair of Lewis's Woodpecker
and their nesthole in the Hayden Burn. Coming from the south (Cheesman
Reservoir) on Stony Pass Road there are two roads going off to the left,
first to Goose Creek Road, and the second Flying G Ranch. The LEWP were in
the "V" between the ranch road and a climbing twisting Stony Pass Road
among half a dozen dead Ponderosa Pine snags. If you don't see them, just
wait; they are there.

Also spotted a Red-headed Woodpecker flying in similar pines toward the
ranch but did not check for others.

Also found the Three-toed WP reported on June 9 by Dave Cameron at State 67
and Rampart Range Road. From the public toilet, walk in 10 yards on the
dirt bike trail and immediately right on a fainter trail. Go some 200 yards
along the ridge and notice an area of dead trees and aspens in a steep
"bowl" on the right.

[cobirds] Yellow Breasted Chat (loveland, Larimer county)

2019-06-20 Thread Jace Wesley Brasher
Today I had an amazing experience with a yellow breasted chat. At morey
wildlife reserve there was a large male singing and fluttering around. It posed
for some great photos as well. As the show went on he suddenly stopped, as he
waited another small yellow/ olive colored bird flew into the brush. The male
flew anxiously towards the other bird. Hope it was a female! Ebird checklist

[cobirds] Help identifying a bird.

2019-06-20 Thread Denice
I have a question and I'm not sure if this is the place to ask it, but here
goes!

Today while driving in the south metro area; Belleview and University, a large
bird flew over.
This bird is one I've never seen in flight as it had long feathers atop its
head.
The birds colors were mostly white/black; not an osprey. The bird was very
large like a raptor or a large water bird of some sort. I feel it was flying
more like a water bird.
>From below the feathers atop its head looked 5-6" long.
To no avail, I can not find a photo online or in my reference book matching,
or even close.
Was I seeing things... 😉
Thank you in advance if you have an answer or can assist me with an answer!
