[cobirds] Pueblo birds 1/20

2020-01-20 Thread Brandon
It was a pretty birdy last three days in Pueblo County. Today's
highlights of what I saw with other birders: Golden-crowned Sparrow,
Yellow Palm Warbler, Red-throated, Pacific, 3 Common Loons, Red-necked
Grebe, Great Black-backed, 3 or more Lesser Black-backed, a few
Iceland (Thayer's) Gulls, a newly arrived Franklin's Gull, Long-tailed
Duck, Black Phoebe. A pretty good day. Other people saw one to two
Dunlins, two White-throated Sparrows, Lincoln's Sparrow. Not sure
what else people saw.

Congrats to Van Truan for seeing his 405th Pueblo County bird species
this morning, the Golden-crowned Sparrow, I helped him find it.

I won't be birding in Pueblo County for the next week, so there will
likely be new and exciting things found by other people.

Good birding,

Brandon Percival

[cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneyes and other Carbondale area birds (mainly Garfield County)

2020-01-20 Thread Dick Filby
Hi folks

A summary of the highlights of the past week, all Garfield County except where
noted.

Red-naped Sapsucker – Centennial Park – Carbondale. (Sub-adult male?) This bird
has taken up residence in the “Yellow-bellied Sapsucker tree”. I have great
photos of both birds. Have not seen the Yellow-bellied on any recent visits,
whereas the Red-naped is seemingly there “continuously throughout the warmer
hours of the day” this week, up to and including today.

Barrow’s Goldeneye – 115 (+-5) private ponds, Coryell Ranch – Wed 15th at
5.30pm; 1 fem Tucker’s private pond 19th; upto 15 Roaring Fork River, just
downstream of Catherine Store Rd bridge most days

Rough-legged Hawk – males all – 1 Carbondale Nature Park daily, a different
bird Carbondale Blue Heron Lane Jan 20, a presumed 3rd bird CR103, c2miles N.of
Hwy82, Jan19.

Merlin – Jan 17 on the power poles on hillside just north of Blue Lake, El
Jebel, Eagle County

Prairie Falcon 1 as Merlin, Jan 18th, 1 most days Carbondale Nature Park

Northern Harrier – 2+ Carbondale Nature Park

Golden Eagles 2-3 – all of them mature adults – Missouri Heights/Coulter Creek
area (Eagle/Garfield Counties)

Bald Eagle 2+ seem to be fewer and fewer in recent winters, despite the river
having not much ice

American Dipper – all along the Roaring Fork, not singing yet, even on ‘warm’
afternoons

Wilson’s Snipe – several locations, Eagle and Garfield Counties – seemingly
commoner when there is less ice, like this winter

Pinyon Jay – up to 50, occasional in our backyard

Lesser Goldfinch – up to 6 in our backyard

Rosy-Finches – Snowmass Ski area, Pitkin County, at the on-hill Bird Feeders –
up to 50, all Browncaps and Gray-crowned

No sign of the 4+ Rusty Blackbirds in Carbondale Nature Park since Christmas

Good birding all

Best regards

[cobirds] Yellow-billed Loon and Common Loon - Chatfield

2020-01-20 Thread Gregg Goodrich
On our DFO trip today we had a Yellow-billed Loon and a Common Loon from
the North Boat Ramp at Chatfield. Also a Dipper under the 470 bridge to
Chatfield. And an American Pipit on the sand bar just into Chatfield after
going under the bridge. Got a few distant digiscope photos of the loons on
the list below.

[cobirds] John Martin Reservoir, Bent County

2020-01-20 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

Today, there were two Greater Yellowlegs in the catchment basin below
the dam just south of the Hasty Campground. They undoubtedly are
wintering farther downstream on private property, but this is the first
time in almost two months that they have been seen on public property.

Two Long-tailed Ducks were seen together from a point between the two
north shore boat ramps just west of the dam.  As both appear to be
females / immatures, I think there are at least three Long-tailed Ducks
on the reservoir. It may take time or luck to find them, since there are
nearly quintuple-figures of Common Mergansers currently on the
reservoir, extending in loose groups all the way from the dam to the
west edge of the reservoir.

A previously-reported adult Great Black-backed Gull loafed today with a
few Herring Gulls on the ice shelf in the bay just north of Clayton
Point, about 4 miles west of the dam on the north side of the reservoir.

A (the?) first cycle Great Black-backed Gull is currently circling high above

2020-01-20 Thread Eric Dinkel
I think cackling with ross given it’s small size.
A blue morph ross looks like it would have a hood and much darker body with
extensive white markings on wings I think.
I searched ross/cackling hybrid on ebird and it looks very similar to the bird
at the park.
Still a very rare bird and cool to see!
