[cobirds] Follow-up: NE Custer County hummers

2020-07-15 Thread Leon Bright
COBirders-

Continuing the hummingbird thread, at our cabin in the Sangre de Cristo
range we are now feeding over 40 Broad-tailed hummingbirds. Their number has
been recently augmented by fledglings. We have 6 or 7 Calliopes, which is
several more than normal, and only 3 Rufous who are not very aggressive.
Normally by now we would have at least double that, doing their best to
guard the eight feeders against all other hummers.

[cobirds] Grey Jay; white breasted nuthatch

2020-07-15 Thread Marcia Wade - Lafayette, Boulder County
On July 15th I saw a white breasted nuthatch on Hecla Drive in Lafayette in
a tree on the south side of the grounds of the Balfour assisted living
facility (the one on east side of street) at 12:30 p.m. A few minutes
later, I saw a grey jay in the field south just south of the facility. At
about 6 p.m. I saw a Cooper's hawk in the field behind Walmart on Hgwy 287
in Lafayette. At Wanaka Lake, the Swainson's hawk's nest has at least two
chicks (I thought I saw a third last week, but since then have only been
able to see two), and they are growing by leaps and bounds. The two great
blue heron chicks that were hatched on Hecla Pond left the nest, stopped
crashing into trees and flew away finally - I miss watching them.

[cobirds] Snowy Range, Wyoming

2020-07-15 Thread Robert Righter
If you are thinking about birding RMNP this summer but are not sure of your
reservation status for entering the Park or just not wanting to battle the
crowds, think about visiting the Snowy Range in south central Wyoming. The
Range is about forty miles north of RMNP or about a three hour drive from
Denver. The Snowy Range shares similar geology and habitat with the Park. The
base elevation of Centennial, WY is about 8200’ as compared to 7500’ for Estes
Park resulting in corresponding cooler temperature. Based on the hikes Sandy
and I have taken, it appears there is more and easier access to the spruce-fir
forest and the tundra zone starts about 10,500, considerably lower than at
RMNP. In 2018 a California Condor, number 72, visited the tundra in the Snowy
Range and who knows what else could show up!

Fourteen in the same spot today, with another six about 1/4 mile south. From
Reynolds landing to Florida (8 miles), I counted 44! 53 total from Reynolds
Landing to Clear Creek (20.5 miles). I love it!

Gary,
All you asked for was the *species* of eagle, so I'd say the large bill
is "all Bald Eagle" and never mind the plumage.

Hatch year recently fledged Bald Eagle. Fairly uniform dark coloration. A
second year bird would have worn more variation on the chest.Eye color is a
consistent dark color. Feathers on the head a uniform in color.
