[cobirds] Durango, end of month?

2020-07-18 Thread Gary Brower
Good morning, COBirders,

Dear spouse and I will be in Durango at the end of the month (staying a bit
north of town, near Hermosa). I’ve looked at the eBird data, but I’m wondering
if locals can suggest one of the “hot-spots” over another? We can easily travel
down-town, or further up into the mountains.

Thanks so much!

[cobirds] eBird question

2020-07-18 Thread Gary Brower
Good morning!

I have an eBird question, the answer to which I can’t find on their website.

Is it possible to aggregated hotspots for a report. In other words, there are
multiple hotspots associated with Cherry Creek State Park (including the park
itself being a hotspot). Is it possible to select ALL of those hotspots to
generate a listing, rather than going through each one separately?

Thanks!

Re: [cobirds] eBird question

2020-07-18 Thread Douglas Kibbe
Gary:
I believe the closest one can come to preparing a composite listing/"report"
you describe is via the bar chart option under "Explore"
This option allows you to derive a bar chart from the following subregions:
the entire state, up to 15 counties, several hotspots, selected important bird
areas, or "my locations".
The resulting bar chart will allow you to pull up a map of each species within
the geographic region covered by the subregion(s) you have selected.
Bar charts are extremely useful when visiting a state or county you are
unfamiliar with. They provide a good overview of the species likely to occur,
when they are apt to be present, and where the past and current sightings have
been.
They would be even more useful if they showed which species have been reported
recently but to ascertain current sightings you must click on the species map
symbol in the chart.

Good luck

Re: [cobirds] Durango, end of month?

2020-07-18 Thread Joe Roller
Gary,
On the CFO website, click on "County Birding" or just use keywords "
Colorado County birding'.
That takes you to a map of CO counties. lLick on the county you will visit
and the best hotspots
are listed and described. Little used and more "minor" hotspots don't
appear on the list.

You can also check the eBird hotspot map and zoom in and find the hotspots
with the highest use,
indicated by the color of the teardrop maker.

[cobirds] Large Black-billed Magpie flock, Dakota Ridge, Boulder, CO 7/18

2020-07-18 Thread Thomas Heinrich
As I was stepping out just a few minutes ago to refill the hummingbird feeders,
I noticed a huge flock of BB magpies circling and congregating along the Dakota
Ridge below Mt Sanitas. Numbers were likely in the 150 range, similar to the
flock of 174 I counted last year around this time, but not as conveniently
organized for counting. One photo I took captured 103 individuals. Has
anyone else seen similar flocks in Colorado recently?
Definitely an impressive sight!
