[cobirds] Migrants hit hard by storm on west slope too

2020-09-14 Thread SeEttaM
An article in an Aspen paper discusses the impact of this week's storm on
migrsting warblers: "
Emerick, a retired faculty member at the Colorado School of Mines, said the
warblers are neotropical migrants that winter in more southerly and warmer
latitudes.

“They’re particularly at risk when we have an early cold snap like we just
had,” he said."

Re: [cobirds] Just a question

2020-09-14 Thread Elena Holly Klaver
Well, on the subject of puzzle questions and other not-quite-cobirds topics, I
was part of an educational webinar on heavy equipment and machinery for
interpreters, and there was a picture of a big truck with a crane, and a
picture of a great blue heron. As in English, the words in Spanish for a metal
crane and the bird are the same, but I had to let the webinar teacher know that
he wasn’t showing a picture of a crane, not Antigone canadensis. He said he
searched for images of cranes, and that was what he found 🙄

Re: [cobirds] Common Black Hawk, Teller, YES

2020-09-14 Thread Wayne Wathen
It indeed was a nice day for my wife and I to see a new State bird. When we
got there about 10:45, it was sitting on a beaver dam feeding on what appeared
to be a few remains of snake.

There were a number of other bird species of interest to us including lots of
Wilson’s Warblers, a few Orange-crowned Warblers, a Brown Thrasher, two
Red-naped , and several species of sparrows. Great day.

looks like there's a campaign to eradicate Russian olive. Anyone know who's

2020-09-14 Thread Charles Hundertmark
Raises an interesting question about the meaning of "ground-dwelling". It
occurred to me after suggesting “junco” that robins frequently feed on the
ground and in that sense might be considered “ground-dwelling.” When I was
thinking of possible answers, I was thinking in terms of ground-nesters, but
“dwelling” could have different meanings.

[cobirds] JeffCo (mostly) birding recap, Sept 8-14 (LONG)

2020-09-14 Thread Scott Somershoe
All,
The birding around Jefferson County (which is most of this report) over the
last week was phenomenal. It was a week to remember, and there were so many
highlights, it's hard to remember them all! As only a couple birds were
posted here on CO-Birds, I thought I’d provide a recap of my highlights and
summarize a bit of what was around, which may be news if you don’t closely
follow the eBird alerts for JeffCo.

I'll also add that all the birds I'm reporting were seen/found without
driving anywhere. I walked or rode my bike for all the birds in this
report. I've largely given up driving to see birds since Covid started and
it's been awesome! The last bird I drove to see was the Black Phoebe in
Littleton on 9 July because I wanted to get photos and see about Eastern x
Black Phoebe hybrids. I rode and got the phoebe on the 10th for my green
year list.

My Green Year list is birds found only in my yard and from walking or
riding my bike from my house and back. No driving to Granby and riding my
bike. :) Riding everywhere has been really fun, it keeps me fairly local,
I am learning ALL the shortcuts to get places, finding little spots that
probably no one ever birds, and it's rewarding and satisfying to walk/ride
for all the birds. I honestly don't miss driving hours to see a bird. It'll
take something really special to get me to drive a couple hours, but I'm
sure I'll come around and drive for something one of these years. The black
hawk didn't even tempt me!

*Now for the highlights:Tues, Sept 8 -* Windy, snowing, terrible conditions
in Littleton. I birded my patch (Clement Park) and found a first park
record SANDERLING that stuck around for at least 3 days. A bunch of folks
got to see the bird during its stay (Yay!!). While watching the Sanderling,
a CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR flew in calling and landed on the shoreline
next to the Sandering! I saw them at the SAME TIME! The longspur stayed
maybe 15 seconds and was gone. A couple great birds for my Green Year List.
Amazingly, this was my 2nd CC Longspur for Clement Park and third in JeffCo
in 11 months. I spend a week or so every June in eastern Montana surrounded
by longspurs, which really helps one learn their calls!

*Wednesday, Sept 9* was phenomenal. Pure birding magic! Epic is an
understatement. I received reports of some continuing shorebirds at Robert
Easton Park that I wanted for my green list but of course I hit Clement
Park first, because I had to. That was a smart move as I found all the
targets from Easton and then some: PECTORAL (2, later I had 4) and a STILT
SANDPIPER. I also found a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER in the pines on N side of
the Rez behind the strip mall (only my second in JeffCo and an overall
tough bird to find, at least for me).

I skipped Easton and ended up riding to Harriman Lake about 4.5 miles away
(yes, it was 30F and snowing/sleeting, it stung my face, but sidewalks and
roads were just wet, so why not??). I got there, got muddy, and saw 4 RED
KNOTS! A couple of us also relocated a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER (apparently
there were 3)! Tons of shorebirds and waterfowl around but everything was
very skittish and viewing conditions were tough. GREAT birds for JeffCo
and, of course, my green list, but I had to get home to do some work. Later
I hit Clement Park again and found park first Baird's Sandpiper (6!). I had
9 species of shorebird at Clement Park on this day, which is amazing for
that little unassuming place.

Over lunch, I see a dowitcher report from Robert Easton and get a photo of
the bird from a friend. It looked GOOD for a Short-billed Dowitcher, which
is very tough in JeffCo. I told some folks about a decent looking SB
Dowitcher report because I thought it was worth taking a look. Reluctantly,
I load up and ride my bike over there (4.3 miles but at least it wasn’t
snowing this time). Yes, my second ride in the frigid cold. Two
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS put on a nice show with a good number of other
shorebirds. Another great green bird too! Plus seeing a lot of friends (at
a distance) at these spots was a lot of fun. Now riding 22 miles in 32F and
colder temps was enough for one day!

By the evening of the 9th, I’d gotten a bunch of new birds for my Clement
Park list, which stands at 149 species. Amazing list for that place.

*Thursday, Sept 10 - *I birded Clement Park (duh) and had 9 species of
sparrow (missed Spotted and Green-tailed Towhees [the latter was park bird
#149] from the previous afternoon) and tallied 49 species. Not bad!

*Friday, Sept 11*: I rode my bike to Chatfield because it’s Sabine's Gull
time and there haven’t been any reported yet this fall, and I'd missed
Black Tern 3 times already. On Thursday, TWO people told me to go find a
Little Gull. I get to the sand spit (Douglas Co) and find TWO Sabine's
flying around (Green Year Bird #199). YAY!!! Sabine's are one of my
favorite birds. Then suddenly a third bird was with them on the water way
out, but I couldn’t tell what it was. The vanish and I figure

[cobirds] Weekend Birding/Weld

2020-09-14 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

Lone Tree Creek crossing at Weld CR 110 (just west of Hwy 85 in Nunn) had a
good smattering of birds:

   - Wilson's Warbler
   - Orange-crowned Warbler
   - McGillvray's Warbler
   - Gray Catbird
   - Green-tailed Towhee
   - Brown Thrasher
   - Lapland Longspur (2) flyover and seen briefing on ground with Horned
   Lark
   - American Goldfinch
   - Song Sparrow
   - Yellow-beasted Chat
   - Brewer's Sparrow
   - White-crowned Sparrow
   - Mourning Dove
   - American Kestrel
   - Eurasian-collared Dove
   - Lark Sparrow

Weld CR 124 pond-few miles west of Hwy 77 hosted ducks, geese, Prairie
Falcon, Swainson's Hawk, Golden Eagle, Greater Yellowlegs, Baird's and
Least Sandpiper.

Galeton Ponds heating up. Burrowing Owl still lingering about one mile east
of Weld CR 74/61 (ponds). Franklin's Gull (34), Long-biled Dowitcher (12),
Stilt Sandpiper (5), Black Tern (8), Forster's Tern 91), Greater Yellowlegs
and Wilson's Phalarope.

Crow Valley Campground I got 37 species, highlights include Red-headed
Woodpecker, Red-naped Sapsucker (2), Laplong Longspur flyover NE corner,
Red-breasted Nuthatch, empids, Gray Catbird, Swainson's Thrush,
MacGillvray's Warbler, and Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Others reported a vireo
species, three Great Horned Owl.

Crow Valley question: Has anyone ventured out to the north-south mature
tree lines at very western edge of farm property out the (west) back gate?
I have not and wondered about how close you can get to them or in them? Or
if worth the hike out to them? I've been out on the farm property just
never walked that far west.

Some photos below.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, September 13

2020-09-14 Thread meredith
Wilson's continued to lead the parade on another moderate day, with 42
birds banded and two recaptures from prior years (both local residents - a
Black-capped Chickadee and a Song Sparrow). Insect eating birds continue
to be low on fat, whereas the seed eaters are showing more, I think the
lingering effects of the storm. Here's the breakdown for the day:

Black-capped Chickadee 1 return, banded 8/26/18, also caught 8/29/19
House Wren 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
American Redstart 1
Common Yellowthroat 2
Wilson's Warbler 28
Song Sparrow 1 new, 1 return, banded 9/18/18
Lincoln's Sparrow 5
Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 2
Mountain White-crowned Sparrow 1

As we approach the half-way mark of this unusual fall banding season, I
want to take a moment to thank those who have visited this fall. Education
and engagement are very much a part of the mission of Bird Conservancy's
banding stations, and we feared that might be lost in this season impacted
by Covid. However, our visitor opportunities, while being restrictive in
terms of the number of people we can have on-site, have provided us (and we
hope our visitors) with a positive and personal experience. We've had a
range of people, from expert birders to eager beginners, from toddlers to
people in their nineties. Parents bringing out their children, hoping to
get them interested; kids (many of whom have been exposed to birds through
our camps and more traditional education programs) dragging out their
parents. (My personal favorites have been the several pairs of dads out
with their young daughters.) Several people have visited more than once!
We are looking forward to the balance of the season!

If you'd like to visit: Due to restrictions related to Covid-19, we are
requiring visitors to make a reservation and we will have only 6 visitors
at the station at a time. We are doing three one-hour time slots, from 8-9,
9-10, and 10-11, on Tuesdays and then Thursdays through Sundays, through
October 11. There is a $5 per person fee; scholarships are available to
those unable to pay. All visitors, staff and volunteers will be wearing
masks and people will be expected to socially distance. To register and for
more information go to
