[cobirds] New species for Rocky Mountain National Park? And how to add to the park checklist?

2021-09-07 Thread Carl Bendorf
Hi All,

I previously reported here on COBIRDS on the Pine Warbler observed in RMNP
on August 6. https://ebird.org/checklist/S92877914

The National Park Service maintains an official database of species for
each national park. According to their database, this would be the first
record of Pine Warbler for the park. Their website portal has a link for
reporting suggested new species and I have done so twice--without any
response. Actually, I don't believe my emails have even been read.

Does anyone have a contact or conduit that might work to reach out to the
"keeper" of this database: Integrated Resource Management Applications at
the National Park Service. Here is the website to which I'm referring:
https://irma.nps.gov/NPSpecies/.

To be honest, I'm not sure if there is a contact person at Rocky Mountain
National Park who might help or if I need to reach out to someone at a
national level?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

By the way, there is another species that would appear to be new to the
park: a jaeger photographed above treeline in RMNP in August 2020:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S73071246

Thanks!

Carl Bendorf

Gary Lefko, the "Nunn Guy" spends as much time birding his "Patch", the
Pawnee, as he can so he's well positioned to describe how the Grasslands
attract birds, bird-lovers and oil companies. You are welcome to join

[cobirds] CFO shorebird trip - Park County Reservoirs

2021-09-07 Thread David Suddjian
Our group had gorgeous weather for our visit today to the thee large reservoirs
in South Park. Temperatures were deliciously cool as we began early working the
west side of Antero Reservoir. This area had most of today’s shorebirds,
including 2 Snowy Plovers and 16 Sanderlings (1 along the shore, and a flock of
15 flying south). Baird’s were plentiful, their flocks blending with brown
Horned Larks in an Antero dry mud medley. Eared and Western Grebes had young of
varied ages, well studied from our western walk and the glassy calm waters.
Also 4 Hooded Mergs.

Later, after a memorable surprise delay (yay Kip’s tow strap and CFO field
teamwork) we went to the south end of the Antero dam. The young Long-tailed
Jaeger made a dramatic and long flyby, before settling way out there and
paddling around. The pale head and long winged look were distinctive in far off
views, as it swam picking items from the surface.

Spinney Reservoir had a 3rd cycle Lesser Black-backed Gull at the north tip,
near the road. Most everything else was not near the road.

The best part of Eleven Mile was the area off Cross Creek Campground at the
north end. Just a nice gathering of birds, with big coot flicks harboring
hidden ducks of varied kinds, including three seasonally rare Bufflehead. Also
10 Hooded Mergansers in various interesting end of summer garb.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies- Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report 9/7/21

2021-09-07 Thread Nancy Ransom
Wow! Today was extremely busy with 91 captures. At one point I was a little
bogged down and had to release some birds so I could catch up with the
volume. Compared to yesterday we had 91 captures over 13 species compared
to 40 with 23 yesterday, so diversity went down! Today I also recorded a
banding demo that is going to be available at the Western Bird Banding
Association Online Conference this Saturday. If you have any questions,
please send them my way.

Wilson's Warbler 42
Dusky Flycatcher 4
Cordilleran Flycatcher 2
Hammond's Flycatcher 3
Orange-crowned Warbler 11
Western Wood-Pewee 2
Rock Wren 1
Chipping Sparrow 10
Yellow Warbler 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 4
Western Tanager 1
Gray Catbird 2
Brown Thrasher 1

We are open 6 days a week at Chico Basin Ranch (closed Sunday), usually
returning from the first net run around 7am and staying open until about
11:30am, weather permitting. Thank you for your continued support!

There are three large reservoirs in South Park, where coots gather in flocks.
