[cobirds] Migration Forecast: 5/20-5/22 (CFO Convention edition)

2022-05-19 Thread Bryan Guarente
COBirders,
*Overnight 5/19 into 5/20 morning:*
Start with right now from the time of this writing (10pm Thursday night):
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/20/0400Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,2208/loc=-105.120,40.191
(Green
circle is Longmont, CO)

The migration chances right now are poor and they will get poorer for most
of CO.
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/20/1200Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,2208/loc=-105.120,40.191
(Green
circle is Longmont, CO)

The winds in three of the four quadrants of CO have a northerly component
(either NW, N, or NE) which is highly unconducive for migration.

The exception to the above rule is SW CO. For much of SW CO, the winds
will be out of the SW (weak, but still having a southerly component). So
expect some typical SW US migrants into SW CO.

*5/20 noon:*
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/20/1800Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,2208/loc=-104.609,38.254
(Green
Circle is Pueblo, CO where the CFO convention is)

The chances are getting better for migrants to move in southern CO
overall. The flavor should still be SW US migrants, not eastern migrants.
The best convergence is into Canon City, CO approximately. So if you are
one of the lucky ones going to Canon City on a field trip from the
convention, keep your eyes peeled as migrants should be moving during the
daytime hours.

*5/20 evening:*
Let the snow/precipitation begin! This is where the forecast gets more
meteorologically interesting, but less so ornithologically-interesting.
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/21/0400Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/overlay=precip_3hr/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,2208/loc=-104.609,38.254
(Green
circle is Pueblo; color shading is precipitation amounts)

*5/21 morning (best for birders, worst for birds):*
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/21/1200Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/overlay=precip_3hr/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,2208/loc=-104.609,38.254
(Green
circle is Pueblo; color shading is precipitation amounts)

So the struggle will be real for a lot of birds out there, especially the
insectivores and ground feeders. With wet snow falling as far south as
Pueblo (0-2") and upwards of 18" of snow along the I-70 corridor, a LOT of
birds will be searching for food anywhere that food is present. They will
also likely be descending to lower elevations to find food. Desperate
times are coming. If you find the food, you find the birds on this day.
These are the storms that drive MASSIVE numbers of swallows from the
mountain reservoirs down to the lower elevation reservoirs looking for
insects. I don't believe this is the type of storm system that will bring
Longspurs to the roadsides unless there are already Longspurs present.
Keep your eyes on your feeders, keep your ears peeled for something
different in the neighborhood. It is likely.

*5/21 evening:*
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/22/0400Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,2208/loc=-104.609,38.254
(Green
circle is Pueblo)
And then we are all cut off again from migration. Birds that were around
are staying put and searching for food. Keep your feeders full or find the
food sources and you will find the birds. No particular place will be
amazing unless there is an amazing food source.

*5/22 morning:*
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/22/1200Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,2208/loc=-104.609,38.254
(Green
circle is Pueblo)
There will be movement overnight, unfortunately, it will be to move the
birds that are present out of town. On the east slope, front range, and
eastern plains, the winds turned to southerly, but not to the south of our
location. So it is time for an exodus.

*5/22 Noon:*
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/22/1800Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,2208/loc=-104.609,38.254
(Green
circle is Pueblo)
And it keeps opening up for birds to leave, but not be replaced.

*5/22 Evening:*
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/23/0400Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,2208/loc=-104.609,38.254
(Green
circle is Pueblo)
The connection to Mexico is back. Finally we will be connected to Veracruz
again and we should see some migrants from afar. But unfortunately, there
isn't a long-term convergence point in CO where they will be obviously
clustered. Overnight, the winds open up to more of a flow into WY and MT.
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/23/1200Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,2208/loc=-104.609,38.254
(Green
circle is Pueblo)

So Monday will bring you some new birds on the eastern slope of CO.

Thanks,
Bryan

[cobirds] Sharpie with pigeon take, or Cooper's? (El Paso)

2022-05-19 Thread Marty W
Hey, Cobirders,

Curious as to your thoughts on this. I'd have thought a pigeon is too big
for a Sharpie, and I've had Cooper's (and Goshawks) take pigeons in the
yard before... But a female Sharpie and a western male Cooper's aren't much
different in size. I see traits of both in the different pics...
In my past experience the Accipiter's size has been noticeably larger
relative to a pigeon.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Report, 5/19/22

2022-05-19 Thread Meredith McBurney
A slightly busier day - out of the teens and into the 20's!

Our most interesting captures today were American Redstarts. We have a
small but hardy population that breed very close to the banding station.
We caught the likely oldest female (banded 2019) on the 13th. Today we
caught what I think of as the patriarch (banded 2017). He is in breeding
condition (expanded cloaca) and was caught with an unbanded adult female.
The third one caught today was a young female, caught in the same run in a
nearby net. Glad to see these guys apparently doing well!

Here's the breakdown of today's 27 new birds:

Warbling Vireo 1
Swainson's Thrush 1
Hermit Thrush 1
Gray Catbird 8
Yellow Warbler 5 new, 1 banded 2021
American Redstart 2 new, 1 banded 2017
Common Yellowthroat 1
Spotted Towhee 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 3
American Goldfinch 2

We are open 6 mornings per week, closed on Mondays. Registration is
required to visit on the weekends - there are three 1 hour sessions,
starting at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30. Go here
to register. There are school groups
every week day, arriving about 9:30. Individuals may drop by early
mornings during the week although there are groups visiting early on some
days.

[cobirds] Mississippi Kite, El Paso County, 5/19

2022-05-19 Thread Chris Selvig
Good afternoon,
I looked up while pulling into my driveway in downtown Colorado Springs
to see an adult Mississippi Kite soaring overhead, a fairly unusual bird
for this part of Colorado. Unmistakable: smallish raptor, pointy wings,
grey belly, black wedge-shaped tail. Last seen at about Willamette and
Cedar around 4:00 PM, drifting east-northeast. Sadly it disappeared when I
ran in to grab my camera.

[cobirds] Weather anomaly for Friday \ Saturday \ Sunday

2022-05-19 Thread John Tumasonis
Weather anomaly will begin Thursday night into Friday \ Saturday \ Sunday,
clearing Monday. Temps today are near 90, and falling to 30's and 40's on
Friday \ Saturday. Snow is expected in a small band from Boulder to Denver
- moving west to east.

Expect: vegetables and flowers to take a hit, maybe 3 - 6 inches of snow
with intermittent rain showers, leaves dying on some trees, and possible
tree branches and trees coming down.

Birds: about 20 years ago a similar situation occurred where foothills and
mountain birds were driven into canyon bottoms and suburban parks and
backyards, along with phenomenon of hundreds of western tanagers, chipping
sparrows, grosbeaks, vireos, and several rare species coming down along
Boulder Creek and Skunk Creek. Birding during and immediately after
(Monday \ Tuesday) may uncover many species. Birds will go into a feeding
frenzy after the front slowly moves out, so photography should be good.
Or, maybe, nothing will will happen, and it will be a wash. (no pun
intended).

Good luck. John T (Tumasonis), Broomfield CO

[cobirds] Possible Yellow-throated Warbler - Deer Creek Canyon - Meadowlark Trail - Jefferson County, CO

2022-05-19 Thread Gisellys Zarzuela
Hi All,

Wish I had more time to observe this bird before it flew off, but I am
fairly certain I saw a Yellow-throated Warbler today (5/19) on Meadowlark
Trail in Deer Creek Canyon.

Definitely saw bold white eyebrow, striking black/white face, and more
yellow than a Yellow-Rump Warbler and then poof off he flew.

multiple birders.
