[cobirds] Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at Ridgway State Park, Ouray Co

2022-10-02 Thread ridgwaybrdr
Yesterday, I photographed a couple of unusual sapsuckers at Ridgway State
Park. One appears to be a female Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and the other an
apparent hybrid Red-naped x Red-breasted Sapsucker. Here is my eBird list:
eBird Checklist - 1 Oct 2022 - Ridgway SP--Marina area - 10 species (+1
other taxa)

[cobirds] The Big Sit! - Sunday, October 9 - Chatfield State Park

2022-10-02 Thread Joey Kellner
Hello COBIRDERS!

Looking for something to do a week from today...Sunday? How about some
leisure birding at a Big Sit?

What is a "Big Sit" you ask?

Well, a Big Sit is similar to the birding event called a "Big Day", in both
events participants try to count as many species as possible, the difference
is that in a Big Day you travel all over a geographical area whereas during
a Big Sit you sit (or stand) in one location (a 17-foot diameter "circle")
and count as many species seen or heard as possible in the course of the
day. This is a worldwide event and as of this posting there are a number of
Big Sit "circles" registered for this year's event!

The Denver Field Ornithologists and Colorado Parks & Wildlife will once
again sponsor and I will host "The Big Sit!" at Chatfield State Park next
Sunday, October 9th. This will be the 18th year (non-consecutive, due to
covid) for this fun and frivolous event. It is open to the public and
EVERYONE is welcome! It will be held from dawn to dusk, come for an hour or
stay all day, whatever works for your schedule.

In addition to a day list, we will perform hourly counts so that every hour
there are "new" birds to be added to the hour's count.

"The Big Sit!" at Chatfield will be located at the Heronry Overlook on the
east side of the reservoir. A park map is at the entrance stations. Come
and help find a few birds!

Bring your own chair or use the bench seating provided by the heronry
overlook deck. Bring binoculars, spotting scope (if you have), food, water,
treats to share or whatever you need to spend time birding! Colorado Parks &
Wildlife will be providing a canopy for shade from the sun, or shelter from
rain. So far, this year's weather looks to be perfect...for once!

If you cannot attend "The Big Sit!" at Chatfield create your own! The
details and rules can be found at: https://www.thebigsit.org

Hope to see you all there!

Joey.

[cobirds] Lamar CCWood on 2Oct2022 (Prowers)

2022-10-02 Thread Dave
Still hot, breezy, relatively few birds. Best ones today around noon were:

White-throated sparrow
Song sparrow
Nashville warbler
Woodhouse’s scrub-jay
Green-tailed towhee
Blue-headed vireo

Most of the action continues to be at the north end of the main trail

Looked for the scissor-tailed flycatcher at Memorial Drive junction with
Woodland Lane twice today but did not see it. Probably hiding in trees out of
wind.

[cobirds] Aurora Sports Park - worth a look; Stub-tailed Wren, White-throated Sparrow - Arapahoe

2022-10-02 Thread 'Cathy Sheeter' via Colorado Birds
Work and a new puppy have kept my birding to a minimum this year, but I was
happy to get out for a coupe hours today.

One of my favorite parts of birding is exploring under-birded places. I
discovered the Aurora Sports Park this past spring and saw it as a place
that had a lot of potential, but at that time was not even an e-bird
hotspot (it now is at: Aurora Sports Park, Arapahoe County, CO, US - eBird
Hotspot ). The location may seem
like a turn off, seemingly in a not great part of Aurora, but this is a
very well maintained, large park with what seems to be full-time staff,
often seen driving around in golf carts, and the park is heavily used for
sporting events during evenings and weekends. Overall, it feels safe, and
I have never seen anything to suggest otherwise in my couple of visits.

The majority of this park are mowed soccer fields (not super exciting), but
the park has left patches of native, un-mowed vegetation in quite a few
areas (which held thrushes and towhees this spring), and between some
fields are crabapple trees. The far side of the park is entirely bordered
by highline canal with extensive riparian habitat and marshy areas with
many mature cottonwoods, willows, cattails and boggy areas. There is a
small pond in the middle of the park, which can be viewed from the parking
lot. It has had a few ducks at times.

Today's highlights included a frustratingly shy Stub-tailed Wren
(Winter/Pacific) and more confiding tan-morph White-throated Sparrow
(White-throated Sparrow was also seen here by me in May). Both were
observed along highline canal portion of the park. Warblers were not
overly active, but a couple Townsend's are always fun to see. YOu can see
my checklist at: eBird Checklist - 2 Oct 2022 - Aurora Sports Park - 40
species (+5 other taxa)

At any rate, if you happen to find yourself looking for an under birded
place to check out, I say give this one a shot. If the front gates are
closed, I have been told that you are still welcome to park and walk in.
