[cobirds] Red phal at Union

2022-10-17 Thread 'Norm Lewis' via Colorado Birds
The bird continues in roughly the same area as reported earlier, north and
central. Best seen from the county road just south of the boatyard. Do not
expect “killer” looks, due to distance and heatwaves, but the bird is
identifiable with a little imagination……

[cobirds] Strange Dipper

2022-10-17 Thread Larry Modesitt
Cobirders,

Yesterday I saw a bird diving like a grebe in the Bard Creek west pond in
Empire (Clear Creek). I watched it diving for several minutes without
figuring out what it was. Finally it was still enough for me to recognize
it as the American Dipper. All gray except for the brownish head and a thin
bill. Later it went to the shoreline and ambled along it, showing the fat
body and short tail.

I've seen dippers often along the shoreline, in the water, or flying along
the water. Never floating on the water and then disappearing. The water in
this pond is shallow and the bottom is muddy. It appears that this fellow
has adapted to his situation.

Have others seen this behavior?

Re: [cobirds] Red Phalarope - Union Res

2022-10-17 Thread Josh Bruening
All,

The Red Phalarope continues at Union Res this morning. It is hanging by itself
in the middle of the res towards the north side. The heat shimmer is making it
near impossible to get decent photos. A scope is required to be able to see
the important field marks. Best views are from the county road on the SE side
of the reservoir.

Bird is the word!
