[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report 9/3/23

2023-09-04 Thread meredith
Last day of week 2, and things were even slower than the earlier few days.
I saw Norm Lewis last evening, birding at the Arsenal, and he commented
that he had been reading "between the lines" in my posts.yep, it is the
pits.

I've been comparing this year with last year, with last year being a fairly
good year. Today I went back and looked at the most recent two bad years
(2021 and 2017). The number of birds caught in the first two weeks those
years was almost identical - 383 new in 2021 and 390 in 2017. This year,
we are at 184. The biggest difference is that in both 2021 and 2017 there
were one or two bigger days at the very beginning, when we caught lots of
Yellow Warblers and House Wrens - summer breeders at Barr. Those species
are not around in normal numbers this year, and I think that speaks to the
conditions at Barr specifically and probably the strange weather we've had
throughout the metro area this year. Now we are into the time when we are
monitoring birds migrating through; we will see what the next few weeks
look like regarding those species.

Okay here are the nine new birds caught yesterday:

Western Wood-Pewee 1
House Wren 4
Gray Catbird 1 (FOS)
Northern Waterthrush 1
Wilson's Warbler 2

Off today; back at it tomorrow/Tuesday. If you would like to visit, we have
one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday
mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour
time slots on the weekends. Click here

 to
make a reservation.

[cobirds] Re: RFI Prewitt

2023-09-04 Thread Nate Bond
Hey Norm,

I birded Prewitt (Washington County) this morning with Eric Dinkle. We
ended up spending most of the morning around the inlet. It was slightly
muddy but pretty walkable. LOTS of fall warblers to pick through: including
Chestnut sided and many Townsends. By the time we started to look for
shorebirds it was warm so there could have been some out earlier. General
conditions were high water and not a lot of mud. A lot of the shoreline was
taken up by humans by the time we were ready to work the shoreline so we
aborted.

Area below damn was significantly quieter, but we did have a Black and
White Warbler which was fun.

2023-09-04 Thread David Suddjian
Norm,

It is mostly full. The margin of the reservoir has shorebirds for the half mile
or so of shoreline from the inlet canal to the east with a nice variety of
species, but low numbers compared to when more habitat is available.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies- Chico Basin Banding Station 9/4/2023

2023-09-04 Thread Chicobander
Lower bird numbers today, but we caught a very nice bird- Worm-eating
Warbler! That is even a rare bird for Northern Ohio where I am from. Bill
Maynard said 2012 was the last time one has been recorded at the Ranch. The
three recaptures we caught all gained weight since Saturday when they were
originally banded. A good sign! There is sure enough insect food options at
the banding area for them to bulk up.

*31 New Banded Birds*
Wilson's Warbler- 12
Orange-crowned Warbler- 1
MacGillivray's Warbler- 2
Worm-eating Warbler- 1
Common Yellowthroat- 1
Western Flycatcher-3
Willow Flycatcher- 2
House Wren- 2
Red-breasted Nuthatch- 2
Lazuli Bunting- 2
Yellow-breasted Chat- 2
Gray Catbird- 1

*3 Recaptures*
Western Flycatcher
Lazuli Bunting
Western Tanager

The station will be open tomorrow through Saturday this week from Sunrise
until around 11:30 AM or until the heat shuts us down. Tomorrow looks to be
a cooler day and I have heard a cold front is coming through overnight
s Tomorrow may be a good day banding/birding. Have a good day!

[cobirds] RFI Prewitt

2023-09-04 Thread 'Norm Lewis' via Colorado Birds
Good morning! Could someone who has been there recently give an update on
conditions at Prewitt. I was out there in August, and the reservoir was full
with no exposed mudflats. Not the best situation for shorebirds.
Has the lake been drawn down, or is it still full?
Thanks in advance for any info.

[cobirds] El Paso county --- RED KNOT

2023-09-04 Thread 'Mark Peterson' via Colorado Birds
CoBirders,
There is currently a RED KNOT in the northeast corner of Big Johnson. This is
only the second record for El Paso county that I am aware of.
