I was just out there- patrol asked if I were birding. I said yes and waved the binos. He said “Great! Have fun!” I think some of those folks have a “because I can complex”. I had one try to chase me off the (public) right-of-way over at the burrowing owl area. I politely declined and she took off, muttering about calling the police. Give some folks a badge, no matter how insubstantial, and they tend to get above their raisin’, as they say in country music. Re: [cobirds] RFI: Parker Brant
Eric- I think they mostly move between those two sites. For example, yesterday I hit Bar CCC first, and there was a small population of geese and no brant. Then I went to PRP and there were zero geese. After making a quick run out to Elbert County, I checked Bar again. More geese, no Brant. Then, on a whim I tried PRP again, and there were now hundreds of geese. Ten minutes of picking through them finally produced the brant. Since there are no other large lakes nearby, all I can think is that the geese may work commercial grassy areas between visits to the two lakes. [cobirds] Long Spurs no, curlews yes-Chatfield
After a quick unsuccessful look for the longspurs reported by Steve and Joey (all the other birds were there- bluebirds, sparrows, pipits), I popped over to the prairie dog town to check for burrowing owls. No luck on those, but the consolation prize is 22 long-billed curlews, semi-hidden in the vegetation about fifty yards off the road. Near the south entrance.
