[cobirds] Updated Bird Codes

2015-08-12 Thread Bob Stocker

I've updated

http://StockerPhotos.com/BirdCodes/

to reflect changes made in the 56th supplement to the American
Ornithologists' Union check-List of North American birds published in 2015.

The page offers a convenient mechanism for matching English bird names,
scientific bird names, 4-letter codes derived from English names, and
6-letter codes derived from scientific names. Data were downloaded from
the two sources in early August 2015: the Institute for Bird Populations
(IBP) and the Bird Banding Laboratory (BBL).

The IBP list prepared by Peter Pyle and David F. DeSante is intended to
cover all birds found in North America, Central America, and the
Caribbean. All its entries are included in the data set.

The BBL list covers a wider variety of birds (including penguins for
example) but covers fewer species. The BBL list was merged with the IBP
list by matching scientific and/or English names. In cases where there
was a discrepancy names from the IBP list were used. Unmatched BBL
entries that included scientific names were also merged into the data
set in approximate phylogenetic order. The combined list which includes
some hybrids and subspecies contains 2322 entries.

Enjoy.

[cobirds] 4-letter codes, English names, scientific names, and 6-letter codes

2014-12-16 Thread Bob Stocker
A couple of recent posts on cobirds prompted me to create a web-based
program for matching English bird names, scientific bird names,
four-letter codes derived from English names, and six-letter codes
derived from scientific names. If you know one code or name, it will
give you all the others. The web page for running the program is

http://stockerphotos.com/BirdCodes

I'd appreciate comments and suggestions for improvement.

[cobirds] Great Egret/Jefferson County

2014-04-13 Thread Bob Stocker
My wife Nancy and I spotted a Great Egret perched at the top of one of
the trees on the island in Kountze Lake in Belmar Park at 11:40 this
morning. It hung around for a couple of minutes after we noticed it and
then took off in a northwesterly direction.

Nancy has posted one of her photos at

[cobirds] Re: Help with Raptor IDs

2013-08-12 Thread Bob Stocker
I received three direct responses and one second hand response. Thank you
all for looking and getting back to me.

There seemed to be general agreement that it was a young raptor, but all of
the responses were different: young Red-tailed Hawk, juvenile Golden Eagle,
juvenile Swainson's Hawk, and juvenile Ferruginous Hawk. I imagine all four
people would agree that a better video would have helped!

One video shows the raptor well enough so someone more adept than I am
might be able to identify it. Two more videos, that may or may not be of
different raptors, record calls. If you can identify the raptors, please
let friendsofdenverpa...@gmail.com know what they are.

 Thanks for your help.

[cobirds] Northern Waterthrush/Lincoln County

2011-05-18 Thread Bob Stocker
Nancy and I spent Saturday, Sunday and Monday (5/14-5/16) photographing
wildlife in the Karval area. On Sunday I took some photos of a Northern
Waterthrush at Karval Lake State Wildlife Area. One of them is posted here:

The Northern Waterthrush is not listed on the current CFO checklist for
Lincoln County.

[cobirds] Re: Barrow's Goldeneye , Platte River, Denver County

2009-12-27 Thread Bob Stocker
Nancy and I located the male Barrow's Goldeneye just north of the
Florida Street bridge over the South Platte at about noon today. It
was still cavorting with a couple of Common Goldeneye females. I've
posted a photo at

http://stockerphotos.com/Bob/SwansGeeseDucks/BarrowsGoldeneye_20091227_9348.html

We also found two male and one female Hooded Mergansers just a bit
north of there.
