[cobirds] Swan at Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge
Yesterday and today there has been a swan at the auto tour at the ANWR. Yesterday it was at Pond 76 (which is the first large pond on the causeway) and today it was at Elk Pond which is on the back side of the auto tour where the the prairie dog research blinds used to be for those who know the auto tour route. The Refuge Manager was also able to check it out today and she ID it as a Tundra Swan. It stays far back from the road, but is easy to spot even in the rain and snow. [cobirds] PAW Email address change
Subject: PAW Email address change Hi all This is a reminder that PAW no longer has any earthlink addresses. The only address for both PAW and me is partners4...@yahoo.com We will be changing providers for outdoors4all.org on Thursday, December 16. We will be creating a whole new website soon. I am really sorry, that some of you have sent emails to the earthlink emails ( any of them) and I could not access any of the email for PAW or my personal ones. We are hoping this will take care of any communication problems. I will let you know when the new website is up and running. Happy Holidays. Carol Carol Hunter Partners for Access to the Woods P. O. [cobirds] Request for assistance with photos and numbers W-t Ptarmigan
We are working on an auto tour of Berthoud Pass for students and those interested in the Pass. The tour will only be on Clear Creek County's website with other partners linking to it. There will not be any hard copies available because of copyright issues. List of partners and other information can be found at: http://www.outdoors4all.org/12601.html We would like to provide information and photos of the White-tailed Ptarmigan. We are asking for your assistance for photos. Photo credit will be given. They can be re-sized so they can not be reproduced in quality. Also does any one have any idea of how many White-tail Ptarmigan are on the Pass? We have contacted the Forest Service and CDOW. Thank you for any help you can give us. [cobirds] North Park - Jackson County
Spring is coming to North Park. The Auto Tour at the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge was opened today. Walden Reservoir still has ice but some pelicans have returned. Lake John still has a great deal of ice left but there was also a small gathering of pelicans there as well. There are Western, Clark, Pied-billed and Eared Grebes in several of the lakes. There were also a lot of Mallards, Northern Shovelers, Avocets and Coots. I am not comfortable with Gull's ID. There was a very large number of gulls. The most were a small (?) gull with a black head. I did get photos (although not great) if anyone is interested and I would be willing to send them to you. The best part of the day for me was the several sighting of Clark's Grebes and these photos came out well. You could see them quite close-up because of the ice on the lakes. [cobirds] B-T Hummingbird - Grand County
About 7:30 this evening I had one male Broad-tailed Hummingbird at my feeder, one day earlier than last year in Granby, Colorado in spite of the snow we have had off and on today. [cobirds] Lake John, Jackson County
I visited Lake John in Jackson County on Monday. The lake and annex are still high, but the area where the "Grebe nursery" has been in past years is receding, but I did not see any nesting birds. I had never experienced a "midge" hatch before...that was amazing. I did get to photograph an Indigo Bunting. Several pelicans, but there seems to be not as many Western Grebes as previous years, but more Clark's with a few Eared Grebes. [cobirds] Northern Pygmy-owl - Grand County
My grandson and I were able to watch and photograph a Northern Pygmy-owl on the Radium Road off the Trough Road (Grand Co Rd #1) this afternoon. [cobirds] Important birding information about hunting sage grouse on the Arapaho NWR
I visit the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge often as a birder and also for our programs for the disabled. On their website http://www.fws.gov/arapaho/ , the Refuge has listed their new hunting plan which is being made available for public comment. The comment period will close on June 18, 2010. I called and asked the CDOW in Hot Sulphur Springs about their policy of hunting sage grouse. The woman told me that they know that the USFW is trying to list sage grouse as endangered, but until they do, you can hunt them in places in Colorado. The ANWR will allow hunting of sage grouse during its season on the Refuge according to this hunting plan. From visiting with locals, I think they would like the refuge to be closed to hunting of sage grouse. I thought that this might be something that COBirds members would like to know about and be able to make comments on. I think if there is enough public comment in support of NOT hunting sage grouse on the Refuge, they might reconsider their hunting plan. I am also in strong support of closing the hunting area that is near the boardwalk/nature trail and overlook in the fall during the hunting season. Not everyone is a hunter who wants to enjoy the Refuge during the fall season. Carol from Granby I sent this to Rachel for her approval before submitting. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
