[cobirds] Barr Lake CBC results
On New Years Eve we conducted the 43rd consecutive CBC at Barr Lake. We had nice calm weather, great visibility, and a great turnout with 39 participants. We tallied 54,114 birds of 76 species, a bit above our average of ~70 species for the count circle. The relatively mild winter so far made for a lot of open water across Barr Lake and nearby reservoirs, leading to very high counts for waterfowl across the board. Cackling and Canada Geese always lead the way in this circle, this year coming in at 16,626 for those species combined. We had all time highs of Northern Shovelers, Northern Pintails, American Coots, and Western Grebes (4 this year, only 1 ever prior). Snow Geese and Ross's Geese were also quite high, though not all-time highs. The high visibility also probably contributed to our all-time high count of Bald Eagles, coming in at 153 this year (prior record of 120 in 2021). Some songbird numbers were on the low end (but not all-time lows). We had unusually low counts of Black-capped Chickadees, American Tree Sparrows, Song Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos and American Robins. We missed out entirely on a few species that are less common but usually present each year such as Brown Creepers and Hairy Woodpeckers. Thanks to all the participants this year, it was our highest turnout over the last decade; great to see more and more folks in recent years! [cobirds] Re: Mystery bird, Louisville
Its a bushtit and possibly a *melanotis/dimorphicus *subspecies, formerly considered its own species, Black-eared Bushtit. They are found further south in NM/TX and Mexico. Males of this group show the full black mask, although some black mask can sometimes show up in juv males of our resident subspecies *plumbeous*. I'm not sure if that's a possibility with this one as it seems fully black in the auricular. There seem to be more of these 'black-eared' ones showing up, including apparent females, and it may not be indicative of subspecies at all. Taxonomy Any photos showing the eye? [cobirds] Barr Lake CBC results
We held our Barr Lake CBC on Jan 2nd. It was a cold, foggy morning with limited visibility, but at least it wasn't snowing during the count! All things considered, we had a great day and were able to see plenty of birds despite the challenging weather (we couldn't even see Barr Lake for most of the count!). - We had 23 participants divided among 9 groups. - We tallied 33,914 individual birds of 69 species. We average about 70 species so it was great to be right about at the average, despite the weather conditions. - About 75% of those individuals were Cackling or Canada Geese, or European Starlings, again pretty typical for this count circle. - We had one new species for the count circle, a Golden-crowned Sparrow! - We had an all-time high of 476 American Robin, more than the first 20 years of this count circle *combined *(1981-2000)*.* - Raptors were low across the board, particularly Great Horned Owls with just one seen, tied for lowest (1991). This was likely driven by the low visibility than anything else. - We saw 72 Bald Eagles, considering the limited visibility this was higher than expected! Thanks to all who participated in this count, we hope to see you again next year and we're always welcome to new participants as well! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies- Chico Basin Ranch 5/27/22
Today was our final day of the spring season at Chico Basin Ranch. The morning started out fairly busy, then slowed down considerably by late morning as the heat began to rise. We banded 41 individuals of 13 species, with decent numbers of Swainson's Thrushes still in the area and a singing White-eyed Vireo that didn't end up in the nets today. The unofficial tally for newly banded birds this season is 1112 individuals of 59 species, which is the busiest spring season we've had since 2011 and great to see after such a slow spring season last year. A huge thanks to our bander Julie and the many volunteers that helped make this season a success! Here are today's totals: Yellow Warbler - 1 MacGillivray's Warbler - 6 Common Yellowthroat - 1 Western Wood-pewee - 5 Willow Flycatcher - 1 Warbling Vireo - 5 Lincoln's Sparrow - 1 Swainson's Thrush - 13 Hermit Thrush - 2 Western Tanager - 1 Gray Catbird - 3 Bullock's Oriole - 1 Blue Jay - 1 We'll be back for fall migration in late August! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chico Basin Ranch banding 4/25/22
Today was our 'soft-opening' for the spring season at Chico, we set up the nets early and ran them for a few hours in the late morning. Overall it was fairly quiet, but nice to see a few early spring migrants. Highlights were an Ash-throated Flycatcher, which may be the only one we get all year, and a recaptured Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow. The sparrow was first banded in October 2019, so it has likely returned to overwinter here each year since; we don't get overwintering recaps very often so that was a nice surprise. Tomorrow will be our first full day of the season. Here are the totals from our partial day: Wilson's Warbler - 1 'Audubon's' Yellow-rumped Warbler - 2 Hermit Thrush - 1 Gambel's White crowned Sparrow - 3 new, 1 recap Ash-throated Flycatcher - 1 American Robin - 1 We'll be open 6 days a week through May 27th, closed on Sundays (with the exception of being open on May 15th and closed on May 16th). We'll be returning from the first net run at about 6:30am and closing around 11am this week. Our bander Julie Shieldcastle will be running the station this spring, keep an eye out for her reports and come visit! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Lake Banding Report, 10/13/21
It was very cold and frosty this morning, with a number of nets frozen shut. We waited for some thaw and opened nets about 1.5 hours late. While it wasn't a busy day, we did have a few exciting birds including our first-of-season Brown Thrasher. The most exciting bird was a recaptured female Hairy Woodpecker with a very well-worn band. We could tell it was at least a few years old, but were very surprised to look up the band # later and see that it was first banded as a young bird in September 2011! That puts it at 11 years old now, but we'll have to recapture her again in 2025 to break the longevity record for the species. We also had a recapture Black-capped Chickadee first banded in 2018 and now re-caught each year since. In addition to these 2 recaps from prior years, we had 15 newly-banded birds of 7 species: Northern 'Red-shafted' Flicker - 1 Brown Thrasher - 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 4 Orange-crowned Warbler - 2 Dark-eyed 'Oregon' Junco - 1 Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow - 3 Mountain White-crowned Sparrow - 1 Song Sparrow - 2 We are open 6 days a week, weather permitting for about 2 more weeks. We've decided 'sparse' is the word or the season, with another day of sparsely distributed birds. 5 newly banded birds today and another 5 recaps. Today we had a nice mix of late-season birds, including the full range of Yellow-rumped Warblers (Audubon's, Myrtle, and an intermediate). Fall technically began a few days ago, but it was today that we hit a turning point at the station that really made it feel official; a species of sparrow outnumbered the Wilson's Warblers for newly banded birds. That honor belonged to the White-crowned Sparrows (all Gambel's). We had another fairly slow morning at Barr Lake today, with the usual mix of sparrows and warblers that we expect in late September. The cooler weather was a nice change, but it didn't result in much difference in our capture rates or suite of species. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Lake Banding Report, 9/3/21
We had another fairly quiet day today, with a brief rain shower mid-morning that had us closing then re-opening the nets. Wilson's Warblers numbers are on the rise, outnumbering all other captures combined. In total we banded 24 birds of 7 species: House Wren - 2 Wilson's Warbler - 17 Yellow Warbler - 1 MacGillivray's Warbler - 1 Dusky Flycatcher - 1 Chipping Sparrow - 1 Black-capped Chickadee - 1 We are open 6 days a week, weather permitting through October 23. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report, 9/1/2021
We started setting up nets here at Chico Basin Ranch yesterday, and were amazed at the amount of vegetation we had to clear out. Net lanes that are usually shin-high with vegetation instead had seasonal growth that towered over my head! I'm hearing it was the wettest spring and summer out here in perhaps a century and I can certainly see the effects! It took us quite a while to clean up the net lanes, so we banded birds just briefly yesterday, then ran the station in full today. We had some nice flycatcher diversity and are still seeing a decent number of Chipping Sparrows moving through. Here are our totals from yesterday and today: 8/31/2021 - 16 birds of 12 species Orange-crowned Warbler - 2 Wilson's Warbler - 1 Western Wood-pewee - 2 Chipping Sparrow - 3 House Wren - 1 Red-eyed Vireo - 1 Lincoln's Sparrow - 1 Yellow-breasted Chat - 1 Gray Catbird - 1 American Robin - 1 Brown Thrasher - 1 Common Grackle - 1 And today (9/1/2021) - 41 birds of 16 species Orange-crowned Warbler - 5 Wilson's Warbler - 6 American Redstart - 1 MacGillivray's Warbler - 2 Hammond's Flycatcher - 1 Dusky Flycatcher - 1 Willow Flycatcher - 1 Western Wood-pewee - 2 Chipping Sparrow - 9 Warbling Vireo - 2 Red-eyed Vireo - 1 recap from yesterday Swainson's Thrush - 2 Yellow-breasted Chat - 1 Blue Grosbeak - 3 American Robin - 1 Blue Jay - 1 Brown Thrasher - 3 We are open 6 days a week at Chico Basin Ranch (closed Sunday), usually returning from the first net run around 7am and staying open until about 11:30am, weather permitting. Our bander for the season is Nancy, she'll be doing the daily updates from here on out! Please come visit! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report 5/28
Today we had a fine morning, with a decent variety and pace of birds, never too busy but never empty-handed either. The continuing surprise was recapturing the Kentucky Warbler yet again, though this time with a higher fat score than previously and weighing in about 2 grams heavier than last week (~15% mass increase). The other surprise was a White-throated Sparrow, our first this season and the latest spring banding record for this species at Chico (all others were in first 2 weeks of May). Overall we banded 30 new birds and had 6 recaptures, of 19 species total: Dusky Flycatcher - 1 Alder Flycatcher - 1 Western Kingbird - 1 Yellow Warbler - 2 American Redstart - 1 Wilson's Warbler - 1 MacGillivray's Warbler - 1 Kentucky Warbler - 1 recapture Lincoln's Sparrow - 1 White-throated Sparrow - 1 Swainson's Thrush - 10 Hermit Thrush - 1 Lazuli Bunting - 1 Blue Grosbeak - 1 Black-headed Grosbeak - 1 Gray Catbird - 1 Northern Mockingbird - 2 new, 1 recapture Bullock's Oriole - 2 new, 3 recaptures Orchard Oriole - 1 new, 1 recapture We are open 3 days per week (Friday - Sunday) through May 30th. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report 5/23
Today we were cut short due to high winds picking up in mid-morning, so only got in about a half-day of banding. We've had a surprising number of Willow Flycatchers over the past week and we're up to 10 now for the season (our spring average is about 3). We had our FOS Veery early on, then on net closing with the winds picking up we were surprised to recapture the Kentucky Warbler yet again, now 8 days since we first banded it. Here are our totals from today, 12 new and 3 recaps of 10 species: Willow Flycatcher - 4 Western Wood-Pewee - 1 Wilson's Warbler - 1 Common Yellowthroat - 1 MacGillivray's Warbler - 2 new and 1 recap Veery - 1 Lincoln's Sparrow - 1 Brown Thrasher - 1 Swainson's Thrush - 1 recap Kentucky Warbler - 1 recap We are open 3 days per week (Friday - Sunday) through May 30th. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report 5/22
Today was quite similar to yesterday, with a busy rush of birds in the first hour, that quickly tapered off for the rest of the morning. We closed a bit early due to wind, but still got in nearly a full morning. We had our FOS Blue Grosbeaks and Western Wood-Pewees, both of which we'd been seeing but not catching over the past few days. In total we banded 27 new birds of 12 species. Willow Flycatcher - 4 Dusky Flycatcher - 1 Western Wood-Pewee - 2 Yellow Warbler - 3 Wilson's Warbler - 1 MacGillivray's Warbler - 3 Lincoln's Sparrow - 4 Swainson's Thrush - 3 Brown-headed Cowbird - 1 Blue Grosbeak - 2 Gray Catbird - 1 Bullock's Oriole - 2 We are open 3 days per week (Friday - Sunday) through May 30th. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report 5/21
Today started off very busy, we had ~20 birds in the first hour and were on pace for our busiest day of the season. Well, over the next 4 hours things slowed down considerably and we ended the day with 32 newly banded birds of 18 species. Still a fine day, and it seems there was a lot of turnover overnight, with no recaps of previously banded birds (no Kentucky Warbler seen/netted either). We had great diversity in the area, my ebird checklist for the morning topped 50 species for the first time this season. Here are our totals: Willow Flycatcher - 1 House Wren - 1 Rock Wren - 1 Yellow Warbler - 2 Wilson's Warbler - 1 Orange-crowned Warbler - 1 Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler - 1 Common Yellowthroat - 2 MacGillivray's Warbler - 7 Ovenbird - 1 Lincoln's Sparrow - 2 Hermit Thrush - 2 Swainson's Thrush - 1 Yellow-breasted Chat - 1 Gray Catbird - 3 Bullock's Oriole - 3 Northern Mockingbird - 1 Brown Thrasher - 1 We are open 3 days per week (Friday - Sunday) through May 30th. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report 5/20
Another fairly mellow day today, with winds picking up in the late morning and shutting us down a bit early. We recaptured the Kentucky Warbler yet again, its still hanging around and not putting on much fat so far. The other highlight was a Ladder-backed Woodpecker (seen and heard often here but rarely caught) that was banded in 2019 as an older bird (hatched 2017 or earlier) making it at least 4 years old now. 19 birds total of 13 species: House Wren - 1 Dusky Flycatcher - 2 Willow Flycatcher - 1 'Audubon's' Yellow-rumped Warbler - 1 Lincoln's Sparrow - 2 MacGillivray's Warbler - 1 Swainson's Thrush - 3 Brown-headed Cowbird - 1 Gray Catbird - 2 Bullocks Oriole - 1 new and 1 recap Kentucky Warbler - 1 recap Brown Thrasher - 1 recap Ladder-backed Woodpecker - 1 recap We are open 3 days per week (Friday - Sunday) through May 30th. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report 5/16
Things slowed down quite a bit today, though we still had a good variety and a handful of new species for the season. We recaptured the Kentucky Warbler from yesterday just in time for a visiting birding group to see this skulker up close. Other highlights were an Alder Flycatcher, the 7th confirmed banding record (along with a number of Traill's that were probable ALFL). I'm pretty conservative on calling an Alder but the coloration and wing formula measurements put this one way into Alder territory. Also a Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay was just the 4th banding record (and first ever in spring) and we had our FOS Lazuli Bunting, a beautiful older male. 16 total birds of 12 species today; House Wren - 2 Alder Flycatcher - 1 Lincoln's Sparrow - 3 MacGillivray's Warbler - 2 Lazuli Bunting - 1 'Mountain' White-crowned Sparrow - 1 Gray Catbird - 1 Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay - 1 Swainson's Thrush - 1 recap Bullock's Oriole - 1 recap Kentucky Warbler - 1 recap Wilson's Warbler - 1 recap We are open 3 days per week (Friday - Sunday) through May 30th. *Getting to “It’s a female American Redstart!” Fundamentals of Passerine Identification* Join Meredith McBurney, long-time bander for the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies for a 2-part webinar on Passerine Identification. There are approximately 175 birds classified as Passerines/songbirds that can be seen in Colorado sometime during the year. Add in some rarities, and we are talking about a lot of birds to sort out. These webinars will combine lectures and quizzes to help you improve your ability to identify these relatively small, usually active birds. This workshop is aimed at those who are relatively new to birding and those who would like to sharpen their identification skills. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Banding Report - Rogers Grove Park, Longmont (Boulder Co.) 10/8/19
Yesterday was our final day of banding for the season out at Rogers Grove Park in Longmont. We caught and banded just 3 birds for the day, as it remained fairly quiet in the area. flocks of Oregon Juncos have shown up, but stayed away from our nets. Here are our totals for the day. Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1 Orange-crowned Warbler - 1 (orestera spp.) Hermit Thrush - 1 We are officially cancelling banding on Thursday, Oct 10th due to the approach of our first winter storm! Even if it doesn't amount to much snow it will be too cold to band birds. It may still be a very productive day for birding though so get out there if you can! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Banding Report - Rogers Grove Park, Longmont (Boulder Co.) 10/3/19
We were rained out on Tuesday so today was our only day of banding at Rogers Grove Park this week. It remains fairly quiet here, with just 6 birds banded for the day, and no recaptures. The Wilson's Warblers seem to have moved on, replaced by some Yellow-rumped Warblers (though not in the nets yet). Our highlight for the day was a 'Eastern' Downy Woodpecker of the *medianus* subspecies, with major white spotting on the wing coverts. Here are the totals for the day: Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1 Orange-crowned Warbler - 3 Hermit Thrush - 1 'Eastern' Downy Woodpecker - 1 Next week will be our final week of banding at Rogers Grove Park. This station runs on Tues/Thurs only. We'll be opening nets around 7:10 and continuing for 5 hours, weather permitting. Feel free to stop by and visit! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/28/19
Well today was quite windy from the start. We were only able to open a handful of the nets due to high winds, and had to close them all at around 9:30. There were lots of warblers and kinglets flitting around the willows and it may have been a busy morning if not for the wind! As it was, we only banded 6 birds for the day, and had 2 recaptures. Here are the newly banded birds: Ruby-crowned Kinglet: 1 Orange-crowned Warbler: 1 Yellow-rumped 'Audubon's' Warbler: 3 Spotted Towhee: 1 PLEASE NOTE the change in our schedule - we are now opening nets at 7:40 (an hour later) and should have birds back at the station by 8:20. We are open 6 days per week, Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through October 13. We will close nets most days at 11:40, although we are closing earlier as needed due to the heat. School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays. Come visit! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 10/12/18
Today we opened nets late at 8am due to a frosty morning. Cold temperatures and moderate winds kept the bird activity low throughout the morning. We finished with just 8 newly banded birds, as well as a returning Oregon Junco banded in the fall of 2016. Here's the newly banded list: Ruby-crowned Kinglet: 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's: 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle: 3 Spotted Towhee: 1 Lincoln's Sparrow: 1 Tomorrow will very likely be our last day of banding for the season at Barr Lake! We had planned to close on Sunday, but the weather forecast isn't in our favor. Tomorrow is also the Harvest Festival at Barr Lake State Park, so come stop by for your last chance to visit the banding station this fall. We will be opening nets at 8am tomorrow. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/26/18
Today Meredith gets a break from composing the daily summary as we had an eventful morning at Barr Lake. We hosted a program with Garth Spellman of Denver Museum of Nature and Science, in which our banding station was streamed live into classrooms around the country and students were able to ask questions of Meredith and Garth as we banded birds. We had a fairly steady stream of birds throughout the day, ending with 50 newly banded birds of 10 species: Gray Catbird 1 House Wren 2 Hermit Thrush 3 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 6 Yellow-rumped "Audubon's" Warbler 15 Wilson's Wabler 9 Song Sparrow 3 "Gambel's" White-crowned Sparrow 8 Chipping Sparrow 1 We are open 6 days per week, Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through October 14. We are opening nets at 6:40 and should have birds back at the station by 7:20. We will close most days by about 11:40. School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays. Come visit!
