Came across a Trumpeter Swan at Chatfield today. Parked at the trail head area
past kingfisher bridge, walked the trail to the first pond, then to the second
pond which is known as Pond #5 on the map I looked at. Lone bird, very large.
Close range. Plenty of other ducks out on this pond/lake, as much of it was not
frozen. My ebird report has pictures and a description.

Subject: [cobirds] Bell's Vireo/Painted Bunting -- Pueblo County 5/24

This morning I was surprised to find a singing Bell's Vireo at Valco Ponds SWA
in Pueblo. It was singing continuously for a half a hour, when I was trying to
get photos of it.

There are two ways to get to this bird. You can park at Valco Ponds parking
lot, along Hwy 96, and walk to the last pond (3rd pond), and keep walking east,
until you are almost past the pond. On your right (south) there are lots of
olives, this is where the bird was. If you would rather not park at Valco
Ponds parking lot, the other closest place to park, is the eastern end of the
Osprey Picnic Area on the North side of the river. You'll have to walk east
and then follow the river to the Valco Bridge, cross the bridge to south side
of the river and go west to about where the 3rd Valco Pond appears, and on your
left (south) is where the bird was.
Also, when I was at the east end of the 3rd Valco Pond, when I was walking
around it, a green colored bunting -- Painted Bunting flew out of the willows,
and went to west side of the pond. I didn't go back there, to try to re-find
it. I wasn't able to get photos of this bird, as I mostly only saw it in
flight. This was my 3rd green plumage Painted Bunting this spring in Colorado!
Since these two species breed in other parts of Colorado, these birds are
probably not of interest to most people, except for a few local people. It is
a long walk (a mile at least) from either of the two parking lots,
unfortunately.
The only other thing of note, on my five mile hike this morning, were four
Bonaparte's Gulls on the Fish Hatchery Ponds, west of Valco Ponds parking
lot/east of Snakeskin Picnic Area parking lot.
Good birding,
Brandon Percival

I was ready for disappointment this morning when I arrived at Hanson Nature

was also a plumbeous vireo in the same area. The warblers were working the
trees around the beaver lodge. Other warblers were MacGillivray's, Wilson's,
yellow, yellow-rumped, orange-crowned, and common yellowthroat.

Hi Everyone, Today 3/28 I went up to Lookout Mountain to see if the Dusky
Grouse was still there. I arrived around 12:30pm. He finally made an appearance
around 3:30pm, strolling across the parking lot and settling in roughly in the
middle, two rows out from the nature center. He was pretty mellow for my visit,
and I hear rumors he has a girlfriend somewhere downhill from the entrance
gate. If he’s not in the parking lot itself, he may be roosting in a tree
somewhere. Mark MillerLongmont, CO

The DUNLIN and male CINNAMON TEAL continue at this location. Late this
afternoon, the Dunlin was working the rocky edge of the water (i.e., not the
sandbar) about 200 yards east of the McKay bridge.
Some of the big ponds on either side of the South Platte River hosted quite a
few ducks and gulls today. The biggest surprise was an adult ICELAND GULL,
seen on one of the ponds east of the river, between McKay and 88th. It flew
towards the southwest just before sunset, so maybe it was heading to one of the
lakes in the southern Denver metro area for the night?

Leon Bright and I were over at Lake Minnequa in the central part of Pueblo
around 11am, and saw the adult Tundra Swan and a female/immature White-winged
Scoter.
The best place to park when it is sunny out, in the morning, is the overflow
Hospital parking lot, south of St. Mary Corwin Hospital, along Lake Ave. This
is the east side of the lake, looking west. The light from here in the
afternoon looking west, is probably not the best. The scoter was straight out
from this parking lot and the swan was toward the south east corner, with some
Canada Geese. I think this is probably the same White-winged Scoter that has
been at Pueblo Reservoir since late December. Good birding,

I was able to get good looks at the canyon wren at Tunnel Drive that John

Sells pond had a snow goose, Ross' goose, and greater white-fronted goose. I
also saw the stub-tailed wren near the first bench on the Canon City River Walk
entering from Reynolds. Quite sure this was a Pacific wren, though the chatter
really did sound like a winter wren. Throat was a rich buffy orange and dark
overall. By the time I dropped the binoculars and picked up the camera he was
gone. Dipped on the yellow-bellied sapsucker at Rouse Park and the
rufous-crowned sparrow at Tunnel Drive (again).

At about 730am I found a singing male Worm-eating Warbler along the Frisbee

I went to the Park, thinking I'd run into the DFO Group, though never did. I
called several local birders, who came and were able to see the warbler with me
until 9-930am. This is my first Worm-eating Warbler in Pueblo, the only other
one I've seen in Pueblo County was at Chico Basin Ranch a couple of springs
ago. The bird ranged along the entire creek, and could be anywhere. The
frisbees were flying around, so the bird might be hunkered down and hard to
find. Photos will be seen soon at
