[cobirds] Black Phoebe at Sinton Pond, El Paso County
Hello Cobirders, I biked to Sinton Pond at around 9:00 this morning, seeing the overcast weather and how active the birds were. There were many more leaves on the shrubs and trees than I remembered seeing just three days ago. The faint sound of a calling phoebe drew me to the northwest corner of place, where I spotted the *Black Phoebe, *very active, over the tiny pond (not the main pond). I observed it and birded the rest of the area for the next 3 hours. Once or twice it came out and would flycatch over the large pond, but mostly it stuck to the smaller pond in the northwest corner. Though it had been vocalizing for most of the time I was there, when I left around 12:00, it was silent and mostly sitting still on its favored branch that stuck out from the middle of the pond. The only other bird of note was a *Gray Catbird, *likely the one that's been wintering there, hanging out in the same spot as the phoebe. [cobirds] Lincoln's Sparrow in El Paso
Hi CObirders, Just wanted to notify you of a few Lincoln's Sparrows I located at Douglas Creek Open Space, which is upstream from Sinton pond and has nice walking/biking trails. I biked down there during my lunch break and heard the first bird calling it's buzzy note at about 12:36, before seeing it and another bird in some bushes right along the creek. There may or may not have been a third bird in there as well. If you look on Google Maps, the bushes they were in are pretty much right where it says "Douglas Creek Open Space". [cobirds] 15 year old birder, looking for spotting scope suggestions
Hey CObirders, I'm looking to buy a spotting scope for the first time. I have $750 right now, but would prefer not to spend that much. I'd really appreciate any recommendations/suggestions you in the Colorado birding community have on the best ones and where to get them. Thanks, and good luck with fall migration. [cobirds] Warbler movement in El Paso County
I stopped by Sinton Pond briefly at 1:00 PM. I only had half an hour, and it was raining lightly most of the time, but I did observe some large groups of warblers. Since my time was limited, I only identified a few Wilson's, an Orange-crowned and a MacGillivray's. There's a good chance there's some more interesting birds. Today 3/21/15 in the late afternoon, I birded Big Johnson Reservoir, El Paso. I had a single Burrowing Owl on the east side of the reservoir at about 6:30 P.M. Nothing else very notable.
