[cobirds] Mt Bluebirds - Summit Co., Dillon

2011-03-18 Thread Ed Baker or Bonnie Boex Baker & Boex
7 pm tonight as I was jogging around Gold Run Circle, a flock of birds (15 to
20) dropped out of the sky to perch in the tallest tree along the lake. they
were not Robins so I KNEW they had to be arriving migrant Mt Bluebirds.
Continued jogging up the Dillon Marina hill whereupon I saw a Mt BB perched on
one of my tall snags located at a nest site.

Been waiting for there arrival; they should have been here march 16; they were
not. But they're here now. It's amazing to see them arrive; then lite-down at
a nest site for a rest on my ever-ready tall snags, then move-on to another, as
they cruise the area for a good site.

Tomorrow I'll identify last year's pairs; new partners if one was lost; now the
fun begins with tears thrown-in as the drama enfolds.

Saturday on Lake Dillon on Dillon side
3 Horned Grebes, scooting around, diving, etc. The male had the tuft
sticking-up on top the head; 2 females.

They were often in and amongst the Geese; some of the Geese banded. DOW had
banded 3 maybe 4 yrs ago. They are resident Geese and I'm glad to have them.
Some of them have met their maker; however.

Then, I've had White-breasted Nuthatches in my yard; none today, but they've
been here along with Steller's Jays and Mt Chickadees.

I'm lead to understand this won't be a temporary situation but are here to-stay.

Dillon Preserve
Mt Bluebirds
While walking the preserve, there are 3 sections wherein you are sure to see
the Bluebirds which I believe are fledged young. Too much feistiness(sp?) and
picking at each other to be the adults. Bottom line: all have not left for
migration YET.

Shrike in willows along bike path & Lake Dillon - Hwy 6

A sighting usually occurring every year mid-Feb

Since the Loggerhead is slightly smaller than the Northern, I'm going with
Loggerhead; didn't have my binocs but the black mask at eyes was evident.

It's the Loggerhead's breeding range up here, right? If so, very early.

If Northern, this is their winter range?

Am I correct? Ready to be proven wrong.

Observation: I've had a flock of Stellar's Jays in yard since beg of Feb; for
some reason today I don't see even one, but they're here. Anyway, one of the
Jays has quite a vocabulary and I'm not sure if that's normal. But being very
smart he's concluded that when the pine squirrel is chattering in the yard, I
place raw almonds in the feeder for he and his mate. Now the Jay mimics the
pine squirrel's chattering and wah-lah, I place almonds in the feeder.I am
very well-trained. His other vocals are very distinctive and healthy; he
should find an excellent mate.
