[cobirds] Mississippi Kites seen Tues. at Glenmere Park-Greeley

2012-08-01 Thread Joan Glabach
Ray and I and Dodie and Bob Adel went to Glenmere Park yesterday.  We arrived
about 4:40PM and looked for the tree described by Nick Komar.  After finding
it, within a few minutes, we looked up into the sky and saw what I thought
might be a Kite flying in.  When it landed in the tree, we knew we were in
luck.  Two more arrived in a few minutes.  One posed on the dead branch giving
us great looks through the scope.  More may have come, but it was hot and we
moved to the shade to look at the egrets and Night Herons before leaving.

Thanks to all who posted previously and gave such good directions.  Go to the
Pavilion building.  Ours were in the dying coniferous tree behind the
Pavillion.  As you face the Pavillion with the lake behind you, the tree is on
the right side.

[cobirds] western grebes on Windsor Reservoir

2011-02-28 Thread Joan Glabach
We just saw our FOS Western Grebes on Windsor Reservoir.  I take that to be a
sign of spring.

[cobirds] Western Kingbird-Windsor

2010-05-06 Thread Joan Glabach
We have a Western Kingbird in the yard this morning busily catching bugs.  The
Tree Swallows and House Sparrows are contending for the three birdhouses.  I
hope the swallows win out.

[cobirds] Red Shouldered Hawk

2010-01-10 Thread Joan Glabach
We live in Windsor, but only today ventured over to look for the hawk.  We
traipsed around in the SWA area and compared notes with a few people in that
area.  Luckily, I had worn snow boots.  With no luck there, we headed south on
257 and ended up in a parking lot of a business on the East side of the road
(Hydrotex, I think).  We were about to leave and I scanned the far trees with
binoculars when I noticed a hawk in my field of vision. The time was close to
Noon.  It was perched on a piece of red machinery at the business and not very
far from the car.  We went over the description Eric Defonso had provided which
we had with us, checked the Sibley's and our printout of Eric's picture of the
bird.  We then backed down slowly along a fence to get a view of the front of
the bird.  At that point the bird flushed--no red in the tail.  It landed on a
green fence type apparatus in the middle of a big field adjacent to where it
had been.  We thought
it would stay there and went back to the SWA to tell the people we had met.
They followed us back but the bird was then gone.  We scanned for about 15
minutes but did not refind it.  Joe Roller then received a call saying the bird
was back near SWA and the group pursued their quest.  Ray and I went to Fort
Collins to check for Wood Ducks at Sharp Pointe Pond--none.

We were very fortunate to get great looks at the Hawk and we were lucky we
stayed in the car as it was so close we would have flushed it immediately had
we opened a car door.  As Eric had said it was sitting straight up and appeared
smaller and slimmer than a Red-Tailed would.  When it landed on the green fence
thing there was a Red-Tail on a nearby telephone pole that we were able to
compare it with.

We hope the others had success.  It was fun being out with others on a similar
quest and sharing information.

[cobirds] Snow Geese- Windsor Reservoir

2009-11-30 Thread Joan Glabach
Someone asked about Snow Geese.  We had them on Windsor Reservoir on Nov. 20
and 21.  There were two Snow Geese and also a Blue-Phase.  On Nov. 21 about
3:30PM a Bald Eagle began circling and diving at one of the Snow Geese.  By the
time I got binoculars the Bald Eagle was in the water and seemed to be trying
to take off and I then realized what had happened.  After that two Bald Eagles
sat in a tree by the Northwest shore and we thought they might be waiting for
the dead goose to drift toward them.  It was drifting in their direction but we
never did see them actually get the goose.

About two days later we saw one goose on the Reservoir and wondered if it was
the survivor of the pair.  This time it was among many Canada Geese.  On the
day of the attack the two Snow Geese were in an area on the water by
themselves---safety in numbers?   We have not seen any Snow Geese here since.

[cobirds] rockwren--Windsor

2009-09-25 Thread Joan Glabach
We have two Rock Wrens in our yard today.  We had one previously on 9/13 as
well.

I guess it was worth putting in all the rocks to get this treat.
