[cobirds] Common Redpolls Ft. Collins

2013-01-19 Thread Lrwils
There were about 50 Common Redpolls at the Discovery Museum in Ft. Collins this
morning. We did not see any Hoary Redpolls in the time we were there.

On the way home we saw a Rough-Legged Hawk on Highway 7, about a quarter of a
mile west of I 25.

[cobirds] Sandhill Cranes Northglenn

2012-10-06 Thread Lrwils

We just had 3 flocks of about 150 Sandhill Cranes going over our house. Second
time in 5 years. Very loud, and headed south.

[cobirds] Mississippi Kites Glenmere Park, Greeley, Bee Bee Draw, Weld County

2012-07-22 Thread Lrwils
Thanks to Tom Pollock and Mark Chavez for pointing out the Mississippi Kites to
us before we even parked the car ! After Mark and Tom left, the Kites flew to
the trees on the south side across
from the rookery, where they came in on lower branches and stayed for quite
some time.

On the way home we stopped by Lower Latham wetlands and Bee Bee Draw. CR 48 and
CR 40 have no water, and few birds. CR 42 had water on north side of road, with
6 Avocets changing
to non-breeding plumage.

At CR 45 and CR 46, there were 15-20 Burrowing Owls on the southeast and
northeast side of CR 46. On CR 45, just south of CR 46, in the first tree south
of CR 45 was a very cooperative, singing Blue Grosbeak. The Grosbeak moved
between the tree to phone poles and corn across from the tree on the west side
of 45.

[cobirds] Dickcissel and Bobolink, Teller Farms, Boulder County

2012-06-10 Thread Lrwils
We found one male Dickcissel and one male Bobolink this morning at the Teller
Farms site posted by Cara Stiles and Thomas Heinrich. Both birds were on low
vegetation west of the Willow Tree,
blowing and singing in the wind. We dipped on the Blue Grosbeak, but two other
birders heard it in the Russian Olive trees, by the oil storage tanks to the
north.

A special thank you to Cara for the info. The Dickcissel was a life bird for us.

[cobirds] Snowy Owl

2010-01-15 Thread Lrwils
Hi CoBirders,

Today we also saw the Beautiful Snowy Owl. What a treat !

Now some observations..

We have not been birding much in the last two years, but I decided this was a
good way to start birding again.

Please, give the Owl room. If your optics are not good enough, borrow optics
from someone else. If your camera/lens is too small, again, borrow.

Today there were a few birders, all being respectful of the Owl.

We did have a neighbor stop, and ask what we were looking at. After telling her
about the Owl, I asked if she would like to look at the Owl through a scope.

She pulled over, and brought her two kids over to check out the bird. They
were very interested, and asked a lot of questions. They were very excited.
She told us she had recently moved here
from out of state to this quiet location. She said Thursday in her Cull de Sac
several people were looking at her roof, and her kids were upset. They did not
go outside.
She told us all the birders were respectful of her property, but neighbors
around her wondered what was going on .
She also mentioned that Thursday the Owl was on the metal building where we saw
it today, and someone went to the dumpster beside the building, and climbed on
top
with a small camera.

Please.. give the Owl room. Please remember you are in a neighborhood, if it
looks like a neighborhood or not. Wave at the people driving by, stay off their
property and out of the street.
Be friendly to the neighbors, and be respectful of the Owl.

A wonderful bird, thanks to all for directions and the posts.
