[cobirds] Mntn Bluebird Boulder County Gross Reservoir

2017-03-21 Thread Pieter Strauss

Spotted my first of the year Mountain Bluebird, hiking on north shore of
Gross Reservoir, 7600 feet. Not a record, last year I saw the first one at
Walker Ranch Boulder County, flying over the road, on 2/29/2016. But fun.
This male mountain bluebird was perching on a 5 foot bush, swooping to the
ground for bugs. Lots of bugs with the warm weather.
Very weak photo taken with iPhone, but best I could do.

Have attached 3 pix. It looks like a rufous-crowned sparrow, but, for me
at least, sparrows are very tricky.

Thanks to Chip Clouse for correcting my ID -- this little fellow is a
Myrtle Warbler. I have attached a pic from last year of an Audubon's
Warbler, same tree. Didn't think to compare the coloration of the throat
-- white vs yellow. I really appreciate corrections, please feel free!

Sorry to have made an incomplete post.

Walker Ranch is about 9 miles southwest of the city of Boulder, Boulder County,
Colorado.

And I am Pieter Strauss, a newbie on this list.

[cobirds] Mountain Bluebird at Walker Ranch

2016-02-29 Thread Pieter Strauss
Spotted the first (for me) mountain bluebird of the year. A brilliant male
flew across Flagstaff Rd. just at the Walker Ranch turn. Seems early for
7500 feet. Perhaps in celebration of Leap Day.
