[cobirds] yet another Dickcissel - Boulder

2012-06-21 Thread Robert Zilly
CoBirds,

I saw a Dickcissel yesterday on the western unit of Pella Crossing OS
(Hygiene). It was on the NW corner of the property singing from a small
snag. When a Cowbird arrived it retreated to the adjacent fallow horse
pasture. This spot is very close to the intersection of Hygiene and Crane
Hollow roads.

[cobirds] Bobolink - Boulder

CoBirds,

This morning at Pella Crossing near Hygiene the were two male Bobolinks in
the hay field south of Heron Pond. This is the same field where they breed
every year, but this is about a week and a half earlier than I can remember
seeing them there. Also FOS were Eastern and Western Kingbird, Savannah
Sparrow, Spotted Sandpiper, and a singing Marsh Wren.

[cobirds] Sandhill Crane - Boulder

2012-03-08 Thread Robert Zilly
COBirds,

This morning around 10 AM, while walking at Pella Crossing near Hygiene, I
spotted a flock of 38 Sandhill Cranes overhead, drifting north. Over on the
western unit near St. Vrain Creek there were about a dozen newly arrived
Great Blue Herons at the small rookery there and one of the nests was
occupied (part of the 'occupy' movement?) by a Great Horned Owl. In the
same area there was also a lone Myrtle Yellow-rumped Warbler. It's
beginning to look a lot like migration.

2012-02-17 Thread Robert Zilly
Hi Connie,

Great Photo! I've been watching several intergrades in my back yard too.
One looks like the bird in your photo - like a std red-shafted with the
addition of a red V on the nape and another one that also has a mix of red
and yellow tail feathers. I think it's cool how an ordinary species can
make winter back-yard birding more interesting.

[cobirds] Flicker Trifecta

2011-12-19 Thread Robert Zilly
Cobirds,

This morning, in the span of less than an hour, my back yard hosted
Red-shafted, Yellow-shafted, and intergrade Northern Flickers. Actually,
the intergrade has been a regular visitor for several weeks and is a male
sporting both a bold red malar and a slightly less bold looking red V on
its nape. It otherwise looks like a typical Red-shafted. The Yellow-shafted
was a yard first. I don't know if intergrades are particularly uncommon
along the front range but it is new to me.

[cobirds] Avocet - Boulder

2010-11-25 Thread Robert Zilly
This morning, on totally frozen McIntosh Lake in Longmont, there was an
American Avocet. I spotted it standing next to a few Mallards and a large
group of Canada Geese out on the ice in the NW corner. Unfortunately, not
long after I saw it someone entered the wildlife closure area and walked all
the way to the edge of the ice flushing 80% of the birds present. I did not
stay long enough to see if it relocated to a different part of the lake.
Don't know if this is especially late but it was a first for me seeing one
on ice.

There is a Red-necked Grebe (not 100% sure) at Mcintosh in Longmont. Find
the Western Grebes in the middle of the lake and scan patiently as it dives
often at times. Resembles adult non-breeding in Peterson and Smithsonian

lower mandible on Gray/brown bird nearly the size of Western Grebe. Best
viewing is from South side off Lakeshore Drive.

Re: [cobirds] Loon molt

2010-08-27 Thread Robert Zilly
Hi Folks,

I just returned from watching the Big Mac Pac Loon and it was diving
frequently. Many of the dives were very short, 1 - 4 seconds. A few were
closer to 10 seconds and one time when I got to 20 seconds I looked around
and realized it had swum out of view while under. It was also spending a lot
of time simply holding its head under. The clartity of the water was rather
poor. You cannot see the bottom three feet from shore. There was just a
slight breeeze and it was only making a ripple on the surface. I wonder if
its behavior could be due to the water conditions rather than illness of
injury?

I also found a City of Longmont doc which states that fishermen could expect
to catch carp, walleye, and crappie. And the shoreline has always been
popular with large waders like Great Egret and Great-blue Heron.

[cobirds] possible hybrid Am Goldfinch?

2010-06-02 Thread Robert Zilly
Hi Cobirders,

Yesterday, while birding Rabbit Mtn. Open Space near Lyons, I observed an
unusual looking American Goldfinch. Instead of having a yellow head with a
black forehead it had a black face. The chin, sides of the face in front of
the eye, and the lower forehead were black. I also saw the bird from behind
and noted that the nape was pale gray. All other characteristics seemed
consistent with AMGO and it looked to be in alternate plumage, as did all
the other AMGO's present.

I haven't been able to find any information about hybridization in this
species. Would anyone with knowledge of this subject care to comment?

The bird was in a mixed flock with other American and Lesser Goldfinches and
the exact location was: 40.24145, -105.20795.

[cobirds] Little Blue Heron, Boulder

Hi Birders,

I went out to White Rocks Open Space to try for the Flycatchers first found
by Ted and re-found by Walter and came up with something altogether
different; a small, mostly blue colored heron. I called for help from Bill

Little Blue Heron. It still has some white on the belly and flanks and the
sides and back of the neck and head have a maroon cast in the right light.
The front of the neck is mottled with white. It doesn't look like anything
in the field guides and I never would have figured it out without their
help, so thanks guys.

The bird was on the west end of the pond on along the White Rocks trail just
south of Boulder Creek. Parking is on Valmont just West of 95th St.

[cobirds] Northern Parula - Boulder

2009-04-25 Thread Robert Zilly
Hi Birders,

A Northern Parula was observed today at Pella Crossing OS near Hygiene. It
was in a mixed flock of Myrtle Yellow-rumped Warbs and Black-capped
Chickadees in the western unit in the loop back near St. Vrain Creek. This
individual's upper parts seemed more gray than blue and I only saw a smudge
of black on the chest, no chestnut (female?).

Another nice group of consisting of Vesper Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, and
BC Chickadees was seen nearer Hygiene road in more open country.

Today's sightings bring to mind the tenth commandment of birding; Let the
Chickadees be your guide!

Good birding

2009-04-08 Thread Robert Zilly
Cobirds,

FOS Lincoln's Sparrow and Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler today at Pella
Crossing Open Space near Hygiene. Both spotted on Western side near St.
Vrain Creek. The Lincoln's was hanging with some of the many Pink-sided
Juncos that were present.

[cobirds] Great Black-backed Gull - Boulder

2009-02-02 Thread Robert Zilly
Hey Birders,

Spotted an adult Great Black-backed Gull at McIntosh Lake in Longmont today.
Also seen by Mike and Mary Blatchley. Great views from the south shore and
easy comparison to Herring as there were many present. It was present from
10:30 until after 1 PM when I left.
