[cobirds] Sage Thrashers, Boulder Valley Ranch, Boulder County
Thanks to Dick Pautsch I headed out to Boulder Valley Ranch this morning to see the Sage Thrashers. Before I reached the trailhead, I stopped to scan the north side of the road. There were at least four and probably more Sage Thrashers flying back and forth among the green shrubs down in the gully. To get to Boulder Valley Ranch head north from Boulder on Hwy 36(28th St). One mile past the intersection of Hwy 36 and Broadway turn right on Longhorn. There will be a sign for Boulder Valley Ranch. Follow Longhorn for 1/2 mile or so until the pavement ends. A little further along the dirt road, numbered telephone poles will be on your left. Stop at pole marked number 12 and look north and down into the gully. [cobirds] Terns, Weld County near St Vrain St Park
My apologies to anyone, especially Joe Roller, who was put out because of my egregious misidentification of probably Common Terns as Least Terns. It seems I need another lesson on actual versus apparent size. Russ Thompson Boulder County -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Long-tailed Duck-Terry Lake-Boulder Cnty
This morning at 8:45 I saw a female Long-tailed Duck on Terry Lake in Longmont, Boulder County. I could not find the Barrow's Goldeneye reported earlier, but it certainly could be there. Hundreds of Ring-billed Gulls, along with many Bonaparte's and some Herring Gulls are near the west shore of the lake and are seen best from 95th St about 2 miles north of Hwy 66. Hundreds of Common Goldeneyes and Common Mergansers are also present, as well as Pied-bill Grebes, a few Horned Grebes, Buffleheads, Hooded Mergansers, and other species, exacerbating the problem of finding a single bird. It is certainly fun looking though, and there may be other uncommon species mixed in the bunch. Best viewed with a scope, although many birds are near the shore. This morning at 10:00 there was a Surf Scoter on the lake at the Frederick Recreation Area on Colorado Blvd between Hwy 119 and Hwy 52. There were also 100+ Ruddy Ducks, about 8 Common Goldeneyes, Canada and Cackling Geese. The Eastern Towhee reported by Cathy Sheeter remains at the Banner Lakes SWA in Weld County, and was easy to find thanks to her excellent directions. As an old Texan, I was happy to see a Northern Mockingbird at Walden Ponds tonight at 7:30. The bird was in the front yard of the green house just west of Cottonwood Marsh. [cobirds] ID Help Walden Ponds, Boulder County
While birding Walden Ponds yesterday, I took a photo of a bird (woodpecker? sapsucker?) that I am unable to identify. I would appreciate an ID from a more experienced birder.
