[cobirds] Juvenal Snowy see

2012-02-14 Thread Suzi PLOOSTER
Hi,

Carol McCasland and I saw the juvenal Snowy Owl late this afternoon around
5 p.m. It was located between 138th and 144th at left of power pole #30
looking to the southwest to a low ridge. It was sitting to the right of a
small pole directly in line with a metal high tension pole toward the
horizon.

Re: [cobirds] Tufted Duck records for Colorado

2011-01-17 Thread Suzi PLOOSTER
Hey Brandon,,

Really great that you can access these records so easily..

What fun we had with those first Tufted Ducks.

The first one was at Waneka Lake in Lafayette. Dwayne Nelson called me to
check it out and it definitely was a Tufted Duck. The next day was a DFO
which trip we led. I took some grain along and scattered it and the duck
immediately came out of water to it and band was visible and there was a
collective groan, as i had just cost the whole lot of us a Tufted Duck on
our lists.

The one that Myron found at Cottonwood Marsh...He had just gone out for a
walk but as always he had his binocs with him,.he had to return home and
tell me, then dash back as he didn't even have the scope with him
originally. I started calling people to come and verify., and then ran out
to see it for myself as well.So between all the calls and the DFO Bird
Alert, we got the word out. Yes, that bird was also with a group of Greater
Scaup. It was really hard to get the word out quickly before cell phones.
Fortunately the bird stayed around for a couple of days and was seen by lots
of birder's.

Those were the days!!!

One adult male at Walden Ponds, Boulder County, 21-23 March 1997, found by

One adult male at Barr Lake, Adams County, 28 March 2000, found by Karleen
 Schofield.

So, today's bird at Golden Ponds in Longmont, Boulder County, would be the
3rd state record (pending acceptance of course), and the first since 2000.
The bird in 1997 was very
cooperative and seen by lots of people, including me, it was with a lot of
 Greater Scaup.

I also, remember seeing one in Lafayette, before the 1997 bird, that had a
red band on one leg, and was thought to be an escape.

Re: [cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow--Red Rocks/Jeffco

2010-10-20 Thread Suzi PLOOSTER
Hi all,

I read with interest the reports on the Golden-crowned sparrow at Red
Rocks. I would have to go back to my year lists ( Oh, where are they??
difficult to find after a move). But when we started birding 20 years ago we
were eager to find that sparrow and took a number of bags of seed to Red
Rocks (courtesy of us and Boulder Bird Club). and were thrilled to find it.

I am curious to know if someone (Brandon perhaps?) has records that show
when the Golden -crowneds' were first found there?

Has anyone ever done any banding there to determine what the yearly
population has been?

I would think there would be a larger population now that these birds have
been here for decades at least.

Any thoughts?

Re: [cobirds] COBIRDS posting ?guidelines?

2010-09-15 Thread Suzi PLOOSTER
AMEN, Allison,

I agree 100%!!!

The birdwatching community should not be an elitist group. I dislike the
idea that some folks want to limit those who are not expert in their
eyes. I easily remember when some compilers thought my sightings were not
creditable and would not post them.

We learn from others and personally I have known any number of experts who
made mistakes., and some of them are world-renowned birders!

This is a great forum to help others learn and everyone needs to learn more,
even the experts. Sometimes that more might mean they need to learn a a
little courtesy. I appreciate the posts that help us to learn more about
birding, but sometimes there can be a fine line between teaching and one
up-man-ship .We don't need that kind of stuff

If you are not positive on an identification , you can always say what you
think it is and ask people to check it out. Good birds are always being
spotted by people who consider themselves to be a non-expert. Don't let
the experts intimidate you!

This subject seems to come up about once a year - com'mon folks surely you
don't have that short a memory! The way I understand it is that Co-birds
is listed as a Colorado Birds Discussion Group and NOT a Rare Bird Alert as
such.

On Wed, Sep 15, 2010 at 3:27 PM, Allison Hilf ah...@aol.com wrote:

As I am sure you have seen, there has been some discussion about what
should and should not be posted on COBIRDS.

From personal e-mails I have received, it is clear that many birders are
quite intimidated to post anything as possible or probable on COBIRDS.
I think Ted's advice to describe any known details as well as Jim's advice
to post even if you are not sure, is what most COBIRDS members want. From
a personal prospective and from my position as temporary RBA compiler -- I
encourage anyone and everyone to post any possible rarity they see. At
least if they do this, I personally as a COBIRDS member have the opportunity
to decide for myself whether or not I want to chase the possible bird. More
importantly, as a COBIRDS member I can contact the person and ask questions
about what they saw and, once again, decide for myself if I want to chase
 the bird.

Presently, there are a small group of birders who phone each other and get
possible rare bird reports long before anything appears on COBIRDS. I
think this does a tremendous disservice to the credibility of COBIRDS and to
the Colorado Birding Community, and I think it makes each and every person
who does this a coward. I am the first to admit that I have done it -- I
have seen a possible rare bird but not trusted my judgment enough to report
it before I have some form of verification from a more experienced birder.
I hope I have personally matured enough that I will now report the bird -
even if I am not sure of it's ID. For me, there is no better way to learn
than from being wrong. I'm stubborn and hence, when I'm wrong, it means
that someone or something has taken the time to teach me something.

In the field, I personally think we are all each others teachers and
being each others teacher is what makes birders so special. I think
COBIRDS certainly plays a role in each of us growing as teachers.

As much as I learn from various posts like Tony's recent explanation of
proper Sabine's Gull terminology -- I could care less what someone calls a
non-adult Sabine's Gull in thier COBIRDS post. The proper terminology
should be my responsibility as compiler - and I thank Tony immensely for
clarifying this for me. I certainly hope that there isn't someone out there
who is too intimidated to post a Sabine's Gull sighting just because they
aren't sure whether to call it a juv. or an immature bird.

Thanks for reading my rants and raves (assuming you made it this far) --
and please POST without worrying about any scrutiny from the birding
community -- we all want the same thing -- to better understand and better
 observe the birds around us!!

 Good Birding,

[cobirds] Yard bird/ House Wren using nesting box Boulder

2009-06-06 Thread Suzi PLOOSTER
Hi,

We have lived in our house for 42 years. We have had nest boxes up most of
those years. For the last three days a House Wren has been singing loudly
and moving stuff into a nest box. I hope the poor fellow attracts a mate,
but I consider it unlikely in this area. All that work and no results
We seldom see House Wrens in our yard, and then usually only in migration in
early spring or fall. Even Steve Frye mentioned to me once that he had only
see wrens in boxes a few times in Colorado.

In fact, I have only seen a house wren using a box in Boulder County once
before. All my sightings have been in riparian areas. Yet in NJ my mother
had a yard full of boxes and everyone was occupied. Curious!
