[cobirds] Barr Lake - Statement From Bird Conservancy of the Rockies
Dear CO Birders, As most of you know, recent changes in the management of water storage at Barr Lake has led Farmer’s Reservoir and Irrigation Company (FRICO) to begin a project to remove vegetation from a portion of the shoreline. Barr Lake State Park is a wildlife viewing and recreation destination for the local and regional community and it is one of the top birding destinations in the state. The park is popular for horseback riding, fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking, biking, waterfowl hunting and more. We are committed to work with FRICO and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) to mitigate as much habitat loss as possible, to avoid any negative economic impact on Brighton and surrounding communities. Bird Conservancy of the Rockies strives to provide authentic, place-based nature opportunities for all, regardless of ability, economic or ethnic background. We are optimistic that we were heard and FRICO is committed to minimizing the damage and protecting as much habitat as possible while addressing potential safety issues. We want to thank the bird and conservation community and our partners with Colorado Field Ornithologists (CFO), Denver Field Ornithologists (DFO), Audubon, Wild Birds Unlimited-Fort Collins, Longmont and Denver area stores, individuals and other organizations who are raising their voices and providing awareness for this critical place for birds. As a science-based organization, we want to stay grounded and take a level-headed approach, and use the data we have been collecting to help inform future management. Grassroots efforts and partnerships are our path forward so we are all contributing to solutions. We will continue to monitor the situation and stay engaged with CPW and FRICO to help ensure a sustainable place for wildlife and people for generations to come. Stay tuned for additional information as it becomes available. Please continue to visit and support Barr Lake State Park. We appreciate you and your support of Bird Conservancy of the Rockies. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Webinar
Hey CObirders, Join Bird Conservancy of the Rockies on Thursday, June 29 from 5 - 6 p.m. MST for a special webinar with Scott Weidensaul and Bird Conservancy Avian Ecologist Marion Clément! The Northern Saw-whet Owl is at once one of the most widespread but little-known raptors in North America, found from the northern edge of the boreal forest in Canada and Alaska to the high-elevation oak and pine forests of central Mexico, and migrates through even those regions where it does not breed. For more than 25 years, Scott Weidensaul has been involved in efforts to better understand this pint-sized woodland owl using banding, radio telemetry and even radar. He’ll discuss what his research has revealed, how he and a couple of colleagues help coordinate similar studies by more than 125 banding stations around North America through Project Owlnet, and what new technologies may reveal about this enigmatic and — to be honest — really cute raptor. Scott Weidensaul is the author of nearly 30 books on natural history, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist “Living on the Wind:” Across the Hemisphere with Migratory Birds” and his most recent book, the New York Times bestseller “A World on the Wing.” Among his other books is “Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Carribean.” His research includes studying bird migration in Alaska with the National Park Service; co-directing Project SNOWstorm, a study of snowy owl winter ecology; and helping build the Motus Wildlife Tracking System throughout the East. He lives in New Hampshire. This webinar is FREE, but registration is required. Follow this *LINK <https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEucOuqqTMqGdxu9q440G38Rb94FgV5Umh3> *to register today! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Webinar
Hello CO Birders, Please join us next Thursday, August 18th from 5pm - 6pm MT for a webinar with Bird Conservancy's Avian Ecologist Annie Hawkinson to learn about the work that she does for our nonbreeding program See below for the webinar description! *Click HERE to register! <https://campscui.active.com/orgs/BirdConservancyoftheRockies#/selectSessions/3152442/filter/session=56274844>* Cheers, Tyler Cash Camp Manager Bird Conservancy of the Rockies -- Grassland bird populations have seen a greater decrease than any other guild of birds in North America since the 1970s. To address these steep declines, Bird Conservancy implements a Non-breeding Grassland Bird Monitoring Program in the Chihuahuan Desert where the majority of North American migratory grassland birds overwinter. We are using this survey data to establish baseline population estimates for several species of grassland birds and to track changes in populations, habitat types and conditions across years. In this presentation, Avian Ecologist Annie Hawkinson will share background information on this program and provide an example of how data collected can benefit the conservation of the Baird’s sparrow. Annie will also share what it is like to coordinate a monitoring effort across the US and MX border. The program fee is $3 to attend this webinar. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Webinar
Hello CO Birders, Please join us next Thursday, May 19th from 5pm - 6pm MT for a webinar with Bird Conservancy's Private Lands Wildlife Biologist Anna Greenberg to learn about the stewardship work she does in the San Luis Valley. See below for the webinar description! *Click HERE to register! <https://campscui.active.com/orgs/BirdConservancyoftheRockies?season=3152442=55482038>* Cheers, Tyler Cash Camp Manager Bird Conservancy of the Rockies -- Stewardship and Conservation in the San Luis Valley Thursday, May 19th from 5pm - 6pm MT Rivers know no property boundaries, and that’s created an ongoing challenge in the San Luis Valley of Colorado. Channels, like that of the Rio Grande river in the SLV, are meant to wander, meander, and form anything but a straight line. These processes create a variety of habitats for fish, amphibians, mammals, and, of course, birds! However, given land ownership, property boundaries, water rights, and agricultural production, it’s harder and harder for humans to work with a wandering river. There’s a careful balance between happy humans, a happy river, and happy habitat. Join Bird Conservancy's Private Lands Wildlife Biologist Anna Greenberg on Thursday, May 19th at 5pm MST to learn about this balance and how folks in the SLV are working towards its implementation.
