And dear conventioneers, don't forget to report the Black-capped Vireos and
other birding highlights to COBirds!

[cobirds] CFO Convention: Final Countdown

2016-05-04 Thread Ted Floyd
Hi, everybody. We're almost there! The CFO convention welcome picnic gets
under way tomorrow evening, Thursday, May 5, at Willow Creek Park in Lamar,
where we will be greeted by CFO President Doug Faulkner and Lamar Mayor
Roger Stagner, where Mississippi Kites will be sailing on the balmy
zephyrs, and where Black-capped Vireos will be singing from the shrubbery
by the port-a-potties... Okay, a few items for your final CFO convention
flight check:

1. Use #CFOConvention
 for all social
media content. We want to see your photos and stories!

2. Use eBird for your field trips. Duh.
But please also consider the option to "share" eBird checklists. Coordinate
with your field trip leaders on this matter.

3. Speaking of field trips, please note that all CFO field trip leaders and
participants observe the ABA Code of Birding Ethics
.

4. Please print out--or, better yet, save a tree, and view on your
phone--the abstracts for the Saturday science session. Your convention
packet has a one-page overview (names of presenters, titles of
presentations, times of presentations), but not the full texts of the
abstracts. So go to the CFO convention's science session webpage
, and check out the
full texts of the abstracts.

5. For general information on the convention, check out the press release
in *The Prowers Journal*

and the announcement at the City of Lamar website
.

See you tomorrow!

[cobirds] CFO convention final countdown: A few resources to prepare for Sterling

2014-08-27 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, Birders.

The night flight the past couple hours has been strong. The low cloud
ceiling is doing the trick. Just wish the crickets would pipe down a bit.
It's a real mishmash up there: a few Wilson's Warblers and Chipping
Sparrows; some Brewer's and Vesper Sparrows, I think; and a fair bit of
stuff in the generic sparrow/warbler category. No doubt, they're all
heading out to Sterling... And we humans will follow suit tomorrow; see
Bill Kaempfer's note from yesterday.

Don't forget to pack your toothbrush, put out the trash, and say goodbye to
mom. And don't forget to check these five websites:

1. tinyurl.com/CFO-2014-Sterling-maps
Before you head out, figure out where your field trip is going and how to
get there. Especially recommended for drivers. But good for everybody.

2. http://coloradocountybirding.org/CountySelector.aspx
Okay, you know where you're going (see #1, above). But what can you expect
to see? Click on the county or counties of your field trip or field trips,
and off you go!

3. http://ebird.org/ebird/places
But you want even more! Type in the name of the county of your destination,
then click on a "hotspot," and you'll get bird lists as up-to-date as
yesterday.

4. tinyurl.com/CFO-2014-names
So you know where you're going (#1, above), what to expect in a general way
(#2, above), and what was seen as recently as yesterday (#3, above). Now
figure out who you're going with. This website is a super resource for
arranging ride-sharing. Which reminds me: It is a CFO tradition that riders
pay the driver for gas. If in doubt, overpay.

5. http://www.aba.org/about/ethics.html
It's wonderful that the all of us with CFO will be birding and nature
ambassadors in northeastern Colorado. This website presents some basic
guidelines and perspective about ethical birding for both individual
birders and groups of birders.

See you all tomorrow!
