Re: [cobirds] Chatfield State Park Douglas Co, Jefferson Co
You’re supposed to tie down that RTLO! I need that! I got a rough legged hawk at clement park today for #270. Crazy story on that one. It’s in my EBird report. Wish I had my camera but observing the bird was definitely better in this case. Crazy stuff. Thursday I’ll be able to chase stuff. Maybe tomorrow afternoon but probably not Sent from my iPhone > On Nov 9, 2021, at 3:41 PM, 'Dan Stringer' via Colorado Birds > wrote: > -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Chatfield State Park Douglas Co, Jefferson Co
Sorry for the late post, This morning between 8 and 10 a.m. there were two Common Loons, two Pacific Loons, and a Red-throated Loon seen by three of us on the Douglas County side of Chatfield Res. Viewed from the sandspit and then closer views from the fisherman's pier. The RTLO was associating with the PALO's and eventually flew up high and over to the north, if they're not seen again at Chatfield perhaps look at S Platte Res just N of C-470. On the Jeffco side we saw one Common Loon and 11 Red-breasted Mergansers in the Fox Run area. Black-legged Kittiwake was seen from the Massey Draw area. [cobirds] Chatfield State Park - Afternoon report from Douglas County
As of about 2:30PM, all the notable birds were still visible from the marina sandspit. However, a scope is recommended for good views. Fear not if you lack one as there have been many observers there with scopes and all will (or should) share views with you. For those who somehow missed earlier reports, the notables included Red-necked Grebe, Ruddy Turnstone, Arctic, Common and Forster's Terns and a Sabine's Gull. [cobirds] Chatfield State Park Red-Eyed Vireos 5/29/15
Hello, While kayaking the flooded forest of Plum Creek, in Chatfield State Park today, I found two singing Red-Eyed Vireos. The first was on the northeast corner of the Plum Creek Picnic Area, and the other was about 200 meters northeast of that in the forest. You could probably hear them singing if you walked up to the water's edge. Interesting how many birds are still very abundant even where the water completely covers the understory. I found a nesting pair of House Wrens. I didn't find any Chats or Towhees over the deep water, as I expected. I did not find any Song Sparrows... came out to do some birding at Chatfield this morning and was very surprised by all the water levels this is not a report on birding but a report on water levels. If you're coming to Chatfield be prepared all areas are closed and flooded out there is no swim beach, Sandspit, Kingfisher bridge, Plum Creek parking area. birding is pretty slow for land migrants. lock Kilpatrick, Parker Colorado Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphone -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. Had a fun day a Chatfield State Park today! Saw more Mountain Bluebirds than I've ever seen out there. So pretty!! Tons of miscellaneous sparrows and I also spotted an Osprey near the Fox Run parking lot and also on the wing near the marina. So happy to have this birding spot 5 minutes from where I live! [cobirds] Chatfield State Park - Fallout - Jefferson and Douglas Counties
As many of you know, spring snowfalls create conditions that often result in concentration of migrants along the foothills. Yesterday (and I suspect today) such conditions existed in Chatfield State Park. A partial list of yesterday's sightings include: hundreds of swallows (mostly Tree), bluebirds (mostly Mountain), and sparrows (mostly Vesper). Less common birds included: Wilson's Snipe, American Pipits, Say's Phoebes, Sage Thrashers, Savannah and Brewer's Sparrows, and a single Eastern Bluebird and Audubon's Warbler. Unable to find the Yellow-billed Loon on Chatfield Reservoir this afternoon, I settled for a drake Barrow's Goldeneye and two Common Loons near the northwestern picnic area ( it is near the northwest boat launch). Viewing conditions were marginal at best and the Y-b Loon could easily be too far from shore for me to ID it. I went to look for the Red-necked Grebe at Chatfield, which I did not find, but I saw lot's of other Grebes. From the Douglas County side, I had around 32 Eared Grebes in a group, then there was a separate group of 12 Pied-billed Grebe, and lastly another separate group of 30 Western Grebes. I counted 4, Common Loons on the Douglas County side also. While I was looking from the old Heron Rookery location, an adult Bald Eagle, sat in a Ponderosa Pine 15 feet from where I was standing. This female Bald seemed to care less about my presence. Near the marina, there were 4, Common Goldeneye, and many American Coot, and a couple of Tree Sparrows. I visited the Park at 2pm. [cobirds] Chatfield State Park (Jeff/Doug), Anton (Wash) 9/27
Hi Everyone- Saturday 9/27 I visited Chatfield State Park. I saw a total of 5 Sabine's Gulls (4 imm, 1 adult) east of the marina toward the mouth of Plum Creek. In the woods along Plum Creek south of Plum Creek Picnic Area, I heard a sapsucker sp. and a Gray Catbird. When I saw Joe Roller's e-mail about Bill K and the shorebirds of Washington County, I drove straight over, and happily, most of them were still there: 1 Am Golden-Plover, 2 Black-bellied Plovers, 4 Killdeer, about 5 each of Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, 3 Baird's Sandpipers, 1 Wilson's Phalarope. Lots of ducks there, too (Mallard, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal). CR CC goes through downtown Anton. CR 12 veers off of US 36 two miles east at CR EE; go 4 miles east on CR 12 to CR JJ, stop at the big black mailbox. [cobirds] Chatfield State Park Appearances, Jefferson and Douglas Counties
The much ballyhooed fallout of passerines appears to have fallen elsewhere. At least Bear Creek Park, Marston Reservoir and Chatfield State Park bird populations appeared relatively unchanged this morning. The saving grace, however, was the appearance of three species of water/shore birds at Chatfield Reservoir. A Black Tern and Sabine's Gull graced the lake off the swim beach in Jefferson County this morning while a single Marbled Godwit was on the sand spit east of the marina in Douglas County. [cobirds] Chatfield State Park: birding paradise lost?
To Colorado Birders: When I heard a couple of years ago that the water level at Chatfield Reservoir might be raised by 12 feet, I immediately thought about the incredible riparian area that would be lost to the Least Flycatchers and American Redstarts and all the other amazing birds. Well, the time has come to submit public comments (by August 7) on the plan to increase water storage at Chatfield (and flood out the riparian habitat, mudflats, etc.). This is not just a local issue but a state issue of avian importance to all Colorado birders to comment on. A riparian area of this significance will not be replaced in any of our lifetimes and one of the top places to bird in Colorado (if not the top) will be lost forever. If you haven't been there - I can't recommend it more, a spring morning in that amazing cottonwood gallery forest feels like being in a hardwood forest back east somewhere. But that is just a portion of what could be lost from this birding resource of Colorado. Time is short, please write letters or sign the petition. Here are important links for letters: http://www.savechatfield.org/content/ http://www.denveraudubon.org/conservation/issues-campaigns/ Petition: http://signon.org/sign/save-chatfield-state Read more about this amazing birding place here: http://coloradocountybirding.com/county/bird_a_county.php?name=Jefferson#558 Thank you to the unsung birders and ASGD working on this issue.
