[cobirds] Harlan's Hawk-- Jefferson County

2015-03-15 Thread JoAnn Hackos
Mature adult -- Harlan's Hawk. Dark, chocolate brown, faint white striping on
upper breast. Undertail pale gray, slightly barred. Upper tail, white speckling
. Bill tip dark. In flight, gray underrated clearly visible, upper tail mostly
dark. Body completely black/chocolate brown. Primaries lighter showing trailing
darker edge. Caught a mouse and ate it in the single tree. Then flew off to the
east.

Location in the median strip between Quincy and C470. At the Quincy exit, going
south on C470, Quincy is on the west side of the highway. The Harlan's Hawk was
in the lone tree in the strip between Quincy and the highway. Flew off toward
the east after people arrived.

[cobirds] Harlan's Hawk - Jefferson County

2010-02-12 Thread mike
Around 11:30 this morning I spotted a Harlan's Hawk northwest of the
round-a-bout at C470 and Belleview (have to take the Quincy Exit off
C470 to get to the round-a-bout). This is the first time this winter
I have seen a Harlan's in this area, although in previous winters
there has been a Harlan's in this area on a somewhat regular basis. I
was able to pull off the road and get several good looks through my
binocs. When I first saw the Harlan's, there were some crows as well
as another Red-tail (Eastern) in the same tree. The Harlan's was a
distinctly larger bird the Eastern Red-tail. Judging from the size
comparison, I think the Harlan's was a female dark intermediate
morph. The bird was mostly black with a very small amount of white
streaking on the breast, a hint of white on the back of the head, and
a pale gray tail with a neat black subterminal band.
