[cobirds] Loveland CBC summary

2023-01-05 Thread Denise B.

The Loveland Christmas Bird Count was held on January 1, starting the New
Year off right!

   - We reported 99 species on count day, three more during count week
(Red-breasted Merganser, Horned Grebe, Eastern Phoebe). We had 81
volunteers out walking/hiking/driving/watching, including feeder watchers.
   - All-time high counts were recorded for Cassin’s Finches (233), Evening
Grosbeaks (97), Townsend’s Solitaires (137), and Pinyon Jays (66). We
usually get a few of the finches; we had not reported a single Evening
Grosbeak or Pinyon Jay since 2018.
   - We had 81 Bohemian Waxwings, but not the high by a long shot. In 2008
we had 1390 Bohemian Waxwings, and we haven’t recorded a single one since
   on a CBC.
   - We had 3 Rusty Blackbirds; a few were previously recorded in 2011.
   - This was NOT a high count for American Robins. The all-time high was
2518 in 2020. Our total this year was 1970.
   - New birds to our CBC this year were Pacific Loon and Eastern Phoebe,
making our total species count over the last 23 years 177.
   - We had ZERO Killdeers, unusual.

Re: [cobirds] Loveland CBC summary

2022-01-07 Thread Brandon
Hi all,

I am thinking that the Solitary Sandpiper on the Loveland CBC, which has
nice photos of it on ebird, would be a 1st Colorado CBC record. I will
have to see if any other Colorado CBCs have ever had one. Great find!

So sorry I couldn’t participate (work). What’s going on with catbirds, so
interesting! We had one at the Rawhide CBC. I hope to be able to come back
next year.

[cobirds] Loveland CBC summary

2022-01-06 Thread Nicholas Komar
Loveland CBC was held Tuesday Jan 4, 2022 (postponed from Jan 1 due to a winter
storm warning) for the 22nd consecutive year. The weather was better but still
challenging with strong winds in certain areas that inhibited bird activity.
Despite this, the 64 participants tallied a record 113 species. Only one
species was new for the circle- a remarkable Solitary Sandpiper found in a
restricted city-owned property along the Big Thomson River. Other unusual birds
included Peregrine Falcon (Second occurrence) and Glaucous-winged Gull, Say’s
Phoebe, Gray Catbird and Lincoln’s Sparrow (third occurrences each). Many
thanks to all involved.
