[cobirds] Park County Reservoirs 10/25

2016-10-25 Thread David Suddjian
Today's Denver Field Ornithologists' trip to some of Park County's
reservoirs enjoyed nice results under mostly cloudy skies with light to
moderate winds. Most of the smaller bodies of water we visited and Tarryall
Reservoir had few birds, but Lake George was moderately birdy and Eleven
Mile Reservoir and Spinney Mountain Reservoir had lots to look at.

Highlights at Eleven Mile Reservoir included: a continuing female *Black
Scoter* just north of Howbert Point, 4 female type *Surf Scoters* in the
northern third of the reservoir (all near the northeast shoreline),
10-11 *Common
Loons*, a first of season *Common Goldeneye*, 5 *Canvasback*, 5
southbound *Sandhill
Cranes*, 2 *Horned Grebes*, 1 *Northern Harrier*, 7 lingering *Am. White
Pelicans*, 1 (2?) *Bald Eagles* and a nice assortment of other ducks.

Highlights at Spinney Reservoir included 1 *Red-throated Loon*, at
least 2 *Common
Loons*, 7 *Am. White Pelicans*, 1-2 *Northern Harriers*, 2 *Horned Grebes*,
and 2 straggling *Mountain Bluebirds*.

2 *Rough-legged Hawks* were along CR 59 near the crossing of the Middle
Fork of the South Platte, near Hartsel.

Hundreds of ducks
Thousands of coots

[cobirds] Park County Reservoirs . 10/28

2010-10-28 Thread Jxdrummo
Co birders : Seems we should have gone to Pueblo reservoir today . No
scoters , no murrelets at the three locations . Lapland Longspur and 6 Common
Loons at Elevenmile Res , 1 Common Loon at Spinney Mtn Res and 2 adult
white swans ( probably ) Tundra at Antero . Swans refused to wake up and walk
or swim around so ID very difficult ( visible from south boat launching
area ). Antero had approx 7/8 ths open water , others completely free .
Waterfowl numbers middling except for an abundance of coots. Spotting scope
essential at these locations.

[cobirds] Park County Reservoirs -ducks and eagles

2009-11-21 Thread Bryan Patrick
Hello all,
With the warmer tempatures of late, I decided to check out the Park
County reservoirs today. Common theme--ducks and eagles.

I started at Antero Reservoir which is 80% iced over and the anglers
have switched over to ice fishing. Right under the dam is the only
open water.

20+ Common Goldeneyes
20+ Buffleheads
1 Common Merganser
3 American White Pelicans
2 Bald Eagles (ice fishing)
10+ American Coots

Driving east on Hwy 24, just west of Hartsel,

2 Golden Eagles
1 Bald Eagle

Next stop was Spinney Revervoir which is about 20% iced over where I
counted 23 Bald Eagles 'ice fishing' and another 3 catching thermals
over the mountain range just west of the reservoir. On the water:

30+ Common Goldeneyes
20+ Buffleheads
3 California Gulls

Ended up at Eleven Mile Reservoir which is about 40% iced over, mostly
on the west end. From Howbert Point:

20+ American Wigeons
30+ Lesser Scaups
20+ Common Goldeneyes
30+ Buffleheads
1 Common Loon
5 California Gulls

Good Birding,

[cobirds] Park County Reservoirs today

2009-10-18 Thread Jxdrummo
Co birders :

Eleven Mile SP held an immature Surf Scoter this morning ( eastern end
) , Spinney Mtn SP not much and Antero SP adult Sabine Gull , 1 st cycle
Thayer's Gull , jaeger sp. Never got a good enough look for positive ID on
the jaeger and could not refind as it disappeared in a northerly direction
despite 2 hours looking. Otherwise lots of Coots , Western Grebes but no
Loons.

[cobirds] Park County reservoirs

2009-10-16 Thread Mark Peterson

COBirders,

Brad Steger, Alexander Steger and I headed up to check out Antero, Spinney
Mountain and Eleven Mile reservoirs today, 10/16/09. Although we found no
loons or scoters we did find a couple of other nice species.

At Antero there were of course more American Coots than one would really ever
care to count. There were also a number of ducks, especially in the northwest
corner. Four species of gull, Ring-billed, California, Herring and a single
Bonaparte's. The highlights though from Antero were the shorebirds, 3
Black-bellied Plovers near the southwest corner along with 20ish Long-billed
Dowitchers. In the northeast corner there was a rather late and I believe
rather rare record for Park county, Marbled Godwit. While looking at the
Black-bellied Plovers we had a flyover, calling Chestnut-collared Longspur.

On our way to Spinney Mountain reservoir we had a Burrowing Owl fly across the
road in front of us. Seems a little late for up there. Spinney has a lot of
shorebird habitat but we could only find a handful of Killdeer and Baird's
Sandpipers. The water level is still fairly high and most of the birds were in
the far northwest corner of the reservoir basically too far away to do much
with. There were many Mountain Bluebirds and American Pipits near the entrance
to the park.

We spent very little time at Eleven Mile and we only saw expected species. We
did see 3 Prairie Falcons at different locations between the three reservoirs
but little else.

A quick stop at Lake George and we were able to turn up a Swamp Sparrow at the
south end. I am not sure what it is about this area but Swamp Sparrows seem to
like it as there seems to be at least one found there every fall.
