[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir CBC results

2020-12-20 Thread Brandon
Hi all,

Since we couldn't have our annual compilation party this year for the
Pueblo Reservoir CBC last evening, results are still coming in for the
Count yesterday. Mark Yaeger the compiler and I believe the total is at
121 species at least (last year was 132 species thr highest ever for this
count). The six teams (7 people) on the river, below Pueblo Reservoir dam
to the east end of the circle found 86 species of birds. I think the
variety of birds along the river last year on the count, was better, though
we had more coverage this year and found a lot of species. The Reservoir
itself was pretty good for water birds, since all the ponds had a lot more
ice than open water. The lack of Juniper berries, made some places pretty
bird-less. I don't know of any new birds for the Count. We had hoped the
long staying Black-throated Blue Warbler might stay, though it was never
seen again after 2 December. A big thanks to all the helpers during this
crazy year. Hopefully next year on December 18, 2021, we'll have a normal
Pueblo Reservoir Christmas Bird Count and the always fun after count party.

Good Birding,

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir CBC Results 12/17

2011-12-17 Thread Brandon K. Percival
We had a good turn out at the compilation potluck dinner at compiler Mark
Yaeger's Art Gallery, in downtown Pueblo this evening.  With everyone's lists
present, we came up with an amazing 127 species (2nd best ever for the count
--129 is the record for this count and the state of Colorado)!  A huge thanks
to all the participants, we have a small group of local birders down here in
the Pueblo Area, and we are always thrilled to have the help of many fine
birders from far away.  Without their help, there is no way that we can find so
many bird species.  So, thanks again to everyone for coming.  It was a
beautiful day, except for the 14 degree start.  It was sunny all day, and no
wind, which is always very nice!

A quick rundown of some of the rarer birds for the count that were found:
Greater White-fronted Goose (2)
Snow Goose (1)

Ross's Goose (1)
Greater Scaup (several)
Surf Scoter (1)
White-winged Scoter (1)
Barrow's Goldeneye (4)
Pacific Loon (1)
Common Loon (3)
all the uncommon winter grebes (lots), except Red-necked
Double-crested Cormorant (few)
Northern Goshawk (1)
Rough-legged Hawk (1)
Peregrine Falcon (1)
eight species of gulls:
Bonaparte's, Thayer's (2), Lesser Black-backed (6), Glaucous (1), Great
Black-backed (1)
White-winged Dove (under 50 I believe)
Greater Roadrunner (1)
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (1)
Black Phoebe (4)
Say's Phoebe (1)
Pygmy Nuthatch (4)
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (2)
Eastern Bluebird (1)
Western Bluebird (only 1)
Northern Mockingbird (2)
Common Yellowthroat (1)
rarer sparrows: Lincoln's (3), Swamp (5), White-throated (1), Harris's (1),
Rusty Blackbird (7)
Cassin's Finch (1)
Lesser Goldfinch (2)

Hope I didn't forget anything, and the numbers are from memory.

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir CBC Results -- 118 species

2010-12-18 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Today's Pueblo Reservoir CBC found 118 species.  The best bird was a PACIFIC
WREN that was seen and heard at close range.  There will be efforts to
photograph this bird in the coming days.

Other highlights:  Greater Scaup (10); Barrow's Goldeneye (1); Pacific Loon
(1); Common Loon (6); Eared Grebes (3000+); Bonaparte's (170+), Thayer's (1),
Lesser Black-backed (4), and Great Black-backed Gulls (1); White-winged Dove
(150); Black Phoebe (2); Say's Phoebe (1); Pygmy Nuthatch (8); Winter Wren (4);
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (1); Hermit Thrush (1); Northern Mockingbird (2); Sage
Thrasher (4); Lincoln's (1), Swamp (3), and White-throated Sparrows (1); Common
and Great-tailed Grackles; and Cassin's Finch (1).

There seemed to be a lot of birds in low numbers, like most waterfowl, and only
1 Western Bluebird, 1 Western Scrub-Jay, and 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch.

Some big misses were Northern Pintail, Prairie Falcon, Brewer's Blackbird
(again for the second year in a row).  The Long-tailed Duck and Yellow-bellied
Sapsuckers that were seen in the last couple of weeks, weren't found today.

Thanks to all the people who were able to help out this year, we didn't seem to
have as many people this year, and only a small crowd (though everyone's lists)
were at the compilation party this evening.
