The bird is still present as of this a.m. It is located in the south west
end of the cottonwood tree line. We saw it from both looking east into the
Cottonwoods and on the shoreline darting in and out of the willows.

Hi all,

My tentative guess is the fruit is European buckthorn. Dave Leatherman, would
you confirm or refute? If it is, do you see a lot of this in Colorado? It’s
unfortunately fairly common where I live. Definitely an invasive exotic, but
birds like the berries and contribute to its spread as a result.

RE: [cobirds] Re: Prothonotary Warbler

2013-11-23 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
Rob, et al,
Yes, European Buckthorn. I agree that is what all the pics people have been
sending seem to show the bird is eating. Yes, it is widely planted, and yes,
it escapes, gets spread, definitely deserves the moniker of "invasive exotic".
Thanks to all who have sent me photos. Interesting situation. Birds do what
they have to do. Insects are probably what these neotropical migrants want as
a first choice, but in a pinch the Ovenbird in Bill's yard and this
Prothonotary clearly prove they can handle millet and fruit, respectively, and
probably a lot of other things if they get desperate enough.

Re: [cobirds] Re: Prothonotary Warbler Fort Collins

2016-04-09 Thread Joe Roller
According to e Bird data, the previous early record for a Golden Swamp
Warbler* was April 16, 2011.
Interestingly 4 birders saw it then in Holly and another person reported a
Prothonotary Warbler on that same date,
April 16, 2011 from Campo.

I suspect that the observations were of one individual bird in Holly, seen
by outof-state "chicken tickers," that and the Campo dude was sleep
deprived and
entered the wrong location, forgetting that he had left Campo early that
morning.

This warbler is a bird from my childhood on the Mississippi sloughs. It's
name is derived, just like our Cardinal, from the color of the vestments
worn
by a Catholic official, the First Notary, or Prothro-Notary, who wore a
golden hood.

   - The name "Prothonotary" refers to clerks in the Roman Catholic church,

Thought interesting enough to share.

Re: [cobirds] Re: Prothonotary Warbler, Centennial Park, Arapahoe County, 12/2/13, 3:45-4:45PM

2013-12-03 Thread Charles Hundertmark
The Prothonotary is hanging out in the wooded strip along the north side of
the lake. Walking on the loop trail, as you enter the most heavily wooded
area, watch the vegetation on the north side of the path. At a bend in the
trail, there are two or three shrub trees loaded with berries. Just past
these shrubs, a path leads down into the thicket near the shrubs. There are
several other berry laden shrubs there. I waited there for about 10
minutes, and the warbler showed up in front of me. It then went to one of
the shrubs and began eating berries. I was able to approach slowly for some
very nice photos.
