At 5:48 PM, we had 800 to 1,200 sandhill cranes flying overhead. We are 3 miles west of Lyons, and they were heading South (duh) and a little westish.Maybe heading for the water behind the dam at Nederland for the night??? Or maybe veering back east to Golden, etc. davis -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. I had two groups fly over my house in Keenesburg (Weld County) yesterday morning around 11:30. They were headed south-southwest as well. Right now at 12:15 pm I had a group of Sandhill Cranes fly over me in northwest Fort Collins, right over Reservoir Ridge Natural Area. They were at first in V formation, basically, and then they circled out of formation to gain height, making noise the whole time, then they headed off in a south, southwest direction more or less in formation. There were approximately 80-100 individuals. Keep your eyes on the sky! At 10:30 today, Sunday, a huge flock of Sandhills flew high overhead, maybe 130-150 birds, circling and then forming. This was at Bingham Hill Road, so look south along the foothills from now on. At about 9 am this morning at the intersection north of Fort Collins of County Roads 19 and 80, where there are huge fields on either side of the road of corn stubble, we saw many groups of sandhill cranes feeding, perhaps up to 4-500 in all the fields. Driving back by these fields from Red Mountain Open Space at 4:30 pm, we were surprisingly treated to all of them lifting off and flying in unorganized groups towards the south. In the distance we could see them forming one big group, waving across the horizon. My question is this: do they migrate at night now, or will they find a place to roost again for the night? This was a magnificent experience seeing all those cranes lift off for us unexpectedly. We had 2-3 Steller's jays in our backyard every day from October 29th to March 2, as we have seen and recorded them. Most delightful, most unusual, and they seem to have split for higher places now.
