Re: [cobirds] Snowy Owl/Weld

2022-02-24 Thread Brandon
It doesn't seem like any of the five Snowy Owls this winter in Colorado,
stuck around for more than one day (one of the five was found dead, the
four alive ones, were one day wonders as far as I know). As far as I know,
Snowy Owl is a CBRC review species throughout the state, so if you are
lucky to find one, make sure to document it for the Colorado Birds Records
Committee, if even no one else gets to see them.

Nearly all the Christmas Bird Count Results are in, and a summary will be
in Colorado Birds, the Journal of the Colorado Field Ornithologists for the
counts that got their data in early enough (next year Colorado Christmas
Bird Count compilers will be asked to enter all their results by February
1st (so that I can get a summary in Colorado Birds with all the counts
included). My summary on the CBC Website, will be sent to National
Audubon, as soon as all the counts are submitted, by the end of the month.

[cobirds] Snowy Owl/Weld

2012-02-14 Thread The Nunn Guy
I watched the Snowy Owl from afar from 1100-1230. Looking south from
WCR 108 (not muddy, past windmill and just past the traffic sign) I
found him on highest and only snow-covered ridge on horizon. It was
about a mile away. Owl just sat the whole time until Golden Eagle
pair showed up for hot (Prairie) dogs. One Golden landed below owl
on fencepost while other circled above the owl. Owl had enough and
flew behind the ridge somewhere. Ferruginous Hawk also present at
colony, ROughie along WCR 47 and two more Goldens along WCR 102.

WCR 106 (muddy as is WCR 49) would have been a much better view
(photos) of the Snowy Owl at this location because, turns out, the
ridge was just off the road east of house at WCR 49 and WCR 106.

BTW it is good to see WCR 108 large prairie dog recover from plague
out. Three years ago this colony was great for Burrowing Owls, 42 on
one count. There is also a colony at WCR 53/WCR 108 NE corner
extending up WCR 53.

Since there is plenty of available food for Snowy Owl perhaps he'll
hang around a few days.

I have a crappy, one mile photo of Snowy Owl on ridge posting in few.

Thanks Gary Lefko, Nunn
