Darn, I was trying to get in and out of Barnes & Noble without being noticed . Although there were zero gulls at Lake Loveland, there were 5 gulls (all Herring Gulls) on the ice shelf at Boyd Lake (30% open). Horseshoe Lake had no open water and no gulls. Hundreds of gulls were feasting at the landfill southwest of Fort Collins, but I didn’t stop to look at them closely.
Nick Komar Fort Collins CO From: Marcel Such Sent: Saturday, January 07, 2012 9:55 PM To: COBirds Subject: [cobirds] Larimer County Birding - Jan 7 Hi all, This afternoon we birded some reservoirs in southern Larimer County during the beginning stages of the snow storm. Blue Mountain Res - 20% open water. Lots of ducks, but nothing unusual. Carter Res - 100% open (at least the southern end), a quick stop produced nothing except for a single Black-billed Magpie. Lone Tree Res - 0% open water. Nothing except a single, lone Christmas tree abandoned on the ice. Whether or not it was an intentional joke or not (regarding the name of the reservoir), I don't know, but we found it fairly humorous. Lon Hagler Res - 80% open. Our only gulls of the day, a good flock on the ice shelf on the western side of the lake. All were Ring-billed Gulls except for four Herring Gulls and one adult Thayer's Gull. No ducks, but a fly-by Bald Eagle. Cattail Pond - 20% open. Tons of ducks. When we arrived, an adult Bald Eagle was perched on the ice, which was attracting some attention from non-birders in the area. The Trumpeter Swan was there, but no sign of the previously seen Tundra. Also a couple of Red-breasted Mergansers were nice, along with our only Canvasbacks and Bufflehead of the day. Lake Loveland - From what we could see, 10% open water. No gulls, but a ton of White-cheeked Geese, along with a single Ross's Goose and a few Northern Shovelers and Mallards. A quick stop after sundown at the Fort Collins' Barnes & Noble was fairly unproductive, except for a random sighting of Nick Komar, who also commented on today's surprising lack of gulls at Lake Loveland.
