Re: [CODE4LIB] COinS

2019-03-20 Thread Albert Bertram
Thanks for asking Ben,

Yeah, we looked at other microformats. I don't think RDFa came up on our
radar for this use case, but the group I work with has implemented that for
other projects. Our specific narrow target was "something zotero can parse
"
from the html of a web page, and we happened to already be generating
openurls for a number of our records. So COinS was the most expedient
option. Other options that looked like they would work had been unapi, or
extending the Zotero csl-json translator to examine script tags within web
pages.

Best wishes,

Albert

That's interesting! I haven't got any experience with implementing COinS, but I
would think that embedded microdata or RDFa is as easy to implement and has a
wider reach (i.e. search engines pick it up too). Have you considered microdata
or RDFa?

Ben

Hi all,

code4Lib Journal still uses COinS in the bibliography/references section of
articles.

Best,
Junior

Are COinS still of any value? Or should I clean-up my pages by getting rid of
them? I haven't heard them mentioned in years.

We're going to be adding COinS to our discovery search engine because it's
custom and Zotero doesn't pickup our records automatically. COinS was the
most cost-effective option in terms of developer time and long-term
maintenance.

Notably, there didn't appear to be translator for json encoded metadata
like ld-json csl-json that would discover records embedded in script tags.

I think that Zotero still looks for COinS, but understands a lot more? If you
drop your COinS markup you may want to make sure that you have some other
metadata in there for Zotero (and tools like it) to use?
