[CODE4LIB] Mobile device usage (iOS vs. Android)

2012-10-30 Thread Park,Go-Woon
I am wondering if any of you can share wisdom of interpreting the mobile
device usage statistics. The market trends predict that the number of
Android devices are exceeding iOS devices. In my campus, the visits
using iOS devices are over 70% of total mobile usage. It is even up from
over 65% last year. I feel odd with this unusually high number. Any
thought?

Re: [CODE4LIB] Mobile device usage (iOS vs. Android)

2012-10-30 Thread James Stuart
There's fairly well established data on that iOS devices, despite
smaller market share, have much higher shares of mobile web usage. A
google search for ios web traffic versus android reveals a lot of
results in that same 60-70% range you're seeing.

The why is probably a wide mix of factors, but three guesses come to
mind immediately:
* android phones, especially low-end ones which make a substantial
chunk of the market, are going to customers with no or very small data
plans
* part of that wide market for android involves people who aren't very
interested in doing mobile web browsing
* the market share of iOS of students at college libraries is possibly
higher than in the general market.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Mobile device usage (iOS vs. Android)

2012-10-30 Thread Genny Engel
I'm not surprised at all. The market trend report coverage generally runs at
least nationwide, if not worldwide. An enormous amount of the worldwide
Android adoption is due to non-US mobile device purchases. But locally, I see
the majority of our mobile access coming from iPads and iPhones.

There have always been a lot of Apple device users in our user population. At
the same time that most US websites were getting under 10% of their visits from
Macs, we were getting 15 - 20%. It's increased since then. Our usage now
looks like:

1. Windows 53.78%
2. Macintosh 30.42%
3. iOS 10.25%
4. Android 4.27%
5. Linux 0.58%
6. (not set) 0.52%
7. BlackBerry 0.08%
8. Windows Phone0.04%

General trends only go so far in telling you about your own audience.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Mobile device usage (iOS vs. Android)

2012-10-30 Thread Jon Gorman
 Any thought?

I guess I'd be somewhat wary of comparing general trends to a more
defined population. I'm guessing your campus population is not
typical of the national population, instead probably skewed towards a
younger population with higher disposable income (and also perhaps
more sensitive to peer pressure) and hence might not follow general
trends ;).

Also, how is your 70% traffic figured? Do you have any way to
determine if perhaps a few outliers are creating a significant amount
of traffic. (In other words, do you know if the mobile traffic
actually represents ownership, or might there be a smaller group of
i-phone users who happen to use the library services more? I'd guess
the smaller the population accessing via mobile, the more likely a
small population could skew the results)

Also, how are you measuring the Android users? Is it possible you're
missing some who would be using non-default browsers or browsers
modified by a carrier?

I don't unfortunately have any stats, but I do seem to remember seeing
some numbers locally that would indicate iOS count of web usage is
still pretty high. Android phones are becoming very, very cheap but
data plans aren't. Also, the form factor and the processing power of
some of the cheaper androids make web searching less than thrilling.
I could see someone using an Android that they get for free, but not
accessing the library for a variety of reasons.

It would be interesting if one could compare the usage of different
Android devices but the difficulty of data collection here might be
enormous. (I'm not sure off hand if there's an easy way to
distinguish, say, a Samsung Galaxy 2 from a Optimus)

[CODE4LIB] Google Indoor Mapping

2012-10-30 Thread Al Matthews
Hello list.

I hope this finds you well and, dry, and with some power.

I'm recently aware of the existence of Google Indoor Mapping which, obviously
enough, brings indoor locations (to Google Maps versioned 6.x and higher).

The project also offers indoor walking directions. I assume this works via a
combination of fine-grained GPS and, some sort of integration with internal
wireless.

Since a number of you will have had experience with this service, I am
soliciting in open forum a discussion of pros, cons, and concerns.

Thank you.

I doubt it.

DNT is a flag that is set by a browser but the server decides whether or not to
honor it. Servers are currently under no obligation to honor them and several
companies have publicly stated that they will ignore it.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Google Indoor Mapping

2012-10-30 Thread Joel Marchesoni
We were recently chosen to be a library pilot for the program. We're at the
stage that our maps are somewhere in Google's process queue and we're waiting
for them to come do a walkthrough for the walking directions.

So far I've seen two cons:

One, it takes a good while for the maps to be approved. I actually uploaded
ours at the end of last year before they approached us about being a pilot
library but I re-uploaded them once we started that process. The re-upload was
in August and they're still pending. The site used to upload the maps to takes
some getting used to but once you do one or two it's pretty easy.

Second, it only works on Android. I'm personally all Android but this is a huge
downside for the program. Our contact tells me there is an iOS version in the
works but with Google Maps being replaced by Apple in iOS6 it won't be out for
a while.

From what I understand the indoor mapping relies mostly on wifi triangulation
but does also use GPS to some extent. The walking directions are optional (we
have opted for it) and to produce them a team from Google will survey your
building to get statistics for your wifi access point locations and I think
(although I'm not positive) pictures. I don't think it's Street View quality
as that has not been mentioned at all; however I've seen that Google recently
developed backpack version of their Street View equipment for use in a project
to map the Grand Canyon [1] so indoors can't be far behind. There is also an
Android app called Google Maps Floor Plan Marker you can use to do your own
walking survey [2].
