Indeed. While I've used Linux as my primary desktop since the 1990s,
XP is my hands-down fave Windows flavor. Stable (by M$ standards) and
comparatively undemanding of resources (again, in the Windows sense).
I still run a copy in a VM under Linux for those things that refuse
to imbibe Wine and that I simply must have available.

Perhaps that's why several contributors to this thread have suggested
that M$' EOL declaration aside, why give it up? XP, I'll miss ya...

In St. Louis, to my knowledge we do not have a makerspace as part of a library.
We do however have a hackerspace called Arch Reactor and a new TechShop is
coming soon, which I guess is maybe something similar but diffferent?

Could any of you help clarify the terms for me and maybe explain what libraries
have to do with them?

You’d be amazed at what you can do with port 80/443 access, so while that is a
deterrent, it is not a solution that will make any guarantees that the machines
cannot do anything nefarious.

Adding a proxy server in front of the machines with a whitelist of allowed web
sites instead of NAT would go further, but at the end of that day you’re still
talking about taking a 14 year old operating system that is no longer supported
and connecting it to the internet.

[CODE4LIB] Survey - Linked Open Data Projects in Libraries: Outcomes and Impact

2014-03-05 Thread Patrick Danowski
***Apologies for cross posting***

Dear Colleagues,

We are acting as the Working Group on Linked (Open) Data of the Austrian
Library Network ( http://www.obvsg.at). Our main task is to design
strategic recommendations for the Austrian Academic and Research Libraries
on Linked Open Data.

For this purpose we are conducting an online survey on the usage and
implementation of LOD within the international library domain. We would
like to invite you to participate in our online survey entitled "Linked
Open Data Projects in Libraries: Outcomes and Impact". The survey will only
take some 15-20 minutes, so if you (or anyone you know) could spare this
time for us, we would be very grateful.

The survey will be open until 11th April 2014 and can be reached here:
http://bibliothek.univie.ac.at/limesurvey/index.php/survey/index/sid/595643/newtest/Y/lang/en

Participation in the survey is anonymous and voluntary. We will publish the
outcome of this survey as Open Data, all data will be anonymized. Please
complete the survey until 11th April 2014.

Your participation and provision of your experiences will be highly
appreciated!

Sincerely,
Patrick Danowski
on behalf of the WG on Linked Data of the Austrian Library Network

Re: [CODE4LIB] Book scanner suggestions redux

2014-03-05 Thread Chris Fitzpatrick
I've used one of the DIY Bookscanners kits. Worked great and I didn't have
to go into the dumpster. They did a good job on the components and
assembly was rather easy.

However, it is all very much a manual process. An operator has to work the
machine to scan all the pages.
In addition, there's a post-processing part using a bit of software called
ScanTailor where you assemble your captures images ( cropping, adjusting,
etc). Then, you have to run all those through Tesseract OCR and an image
compressor to get PDFs, if that's what you want.

The scanner probably cannot do large format stuff like maps and posters,
but since it's just using standard cameras, you can just take the cameras
off and use them capture images with a standard tripod.

OCR to ePub is not really possible. Or at least, I don't think it's
possible.

Lots of work...like actual work someone has to do. But the quality is very
good, much better than the Xerox MFP scanners we used to scan loose leaf
articles.

I don't have experience, but a couple of years back, a group started selling
kits to make book scanners:

It's $500+shipping, and missing some parts (glass, cameras, paint), but it
means that instead of carpentry skills, you just need experience assembling

You should be able to use the content negotiation support on Crossref to get

Re: [CODE4LIB] Retrieving ISSN using a DOI

2014-03-05 Thread Joseph Montibello
Hi,

I think that crossref might still be able to get you what you want. I
registered for a free account and then looked at their API docs
(http://help.crossref.org)

http://www.crossref.org/openurl?pid=joseph.montibe...@dartmouth.edu&id=doi:10.1103/PhysRev.47.777&noredirect=true

So, given the DOI you can get back an XML response that includes ISSN (assuming
that there is one in the record retrieved). Could you do something AJAXy to
make this request, then parse XML to get the ISSN out of the response?

There’s probably ten better ways to do it than this, but maybe this will spark
some ideas?

Heya...

We've got a pretty good set of co-referenced identifiers for titles in
KBPlus (http://www.kbplus.ac.uk), although we don't have a service exposed
specifically for doing lookups. GOKb (US Sister project) will have a
specific coreference service for exactly this kind of query - Not public
yet, but worth asking the staff at JISC Collections for early access if
this is an interesting use case.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Retrieving ISSN using a DOI

2014-03-05 Thread Graham, Stephen
OK, I've received a couple of emails telling me that the ISSN is not always
included in the DOI - that it depends on the publisher. So, I guess my original
question still stands!

Sorry - I've answered my own question. The ISSN is actually contained in the
DOI. Didn't realise this! D'oh!

Hi All - is there a service/API that will return the ISSN if I provide the DOI?
I was hoping that the Crossref API would do this, but I can't see the ISSN in
the JSON it returns.

I'm adding a DOI field to our OPAC ILL form, so if the user has the DOI they
can use this to populate the form rather than add all the data manually. When
the user submits the form I'm querying our openURL resolver API to see if we
have access to the article. If we do then the form will alert the user and
provide a link. The query to the openURL resolver works better if we have the
ISSN, but if the user has used a DOI the ISSN is frustratingly never there.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Windows XP EOL

2014-03-05 Thread Michael Bond
Why not setup your XP boxes to use a private network (10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x)
and put them behind a heavily fire walled NAT solution. Could be setup on the
network level or with a router and a linux box running IP tables. Lots of ways
to do it.

Install and keep updated Firefox or Chrome, lock down the machines so that
users don’t have permissions to install anything, and setup a whitelist of
programs that are allowed to be run (takes a little bit of work, but its very
doable. We did this in WVU Libraries on all our machines [500 or so], public
and staff, until we got our virtualized desktops in place).

You can’t disallow Internet Explorer from running, but you can limit the
websites that it is allowed to visit. You could even go as far as only allowing
it to connect to the local host, but likely anything ‘on campus’ would be fine.

I’m assuming you are using some sort of image management solution (Ghost, at
the very least). So once you get an image setup it shouldn’t be that bad to
maintain and deploy. And if something does become exploited, you can can
re-image the machine.

Configure the NAT to not allow any traffic to come from that private network
other than ports 80 and 443 (and any other legitimate port that you need). that
way if a machine does become compromised it can’t do (much) harm outside of
your private XP network.

If you need AD authentication you can set that all up in the ACLs for the
network as well so that they can only contact a specific authentication server.
If you absolutely needed to you could even put an auth server on the same
private network that has a trust back to your main auth servers. Put 2 network
interfaces in it and it can live on 2 networks so you don’t have to poke a hole
through your private networks ACLs to get back to the main auth servers.

Its not an ideal situation, but if you can’t afford new machines and you
absolutely need to keep your XP machines running there are ways of doing it.
But at what point does it become cost prohibitive with your time compared to
investing in new hardware?

If you don’t do something though, you’ll be spending all your time rebuilding
compromised XP boxes eventually.
