Steelsen,

Maybe related but not quite what you're describing: we're developing a requests
application that will interface with a number of different systems, including
Illiad, Symphony, and LAS, for fulfilling the requests. Specifically, we are:

- adding a Scan & Deliver option for a subset of our materials, for qualified
users
- providing a single request process for off-campus materials, regardless of
where the material is located (currently the user must use vastly different
procedures depending on which offsite location the materials are stored at -
and a single archive may have materials in 2 or more different locations)

It's not a shopping cart model, and specifically doesn't solve the problem of
enforcing Special Collections request limits across multiple archives. (In
reality, for us, those limits are a little mushy, and all requests with limits
are mediated - that is, it's up to the division's public service manager to
decide whether an extra box will fit on the truck on Wednesday.)

But in case it's useful, here's the current UI design spec:

2015-03-06 Thread Dubnicek, Ryan C
*Apologies for crossposting*

HathiTrust Research Center UnCamp
March 30-31, 2015

This year’s HathiTrust Research Center UnCamp will be held March 30-31, 2015 at
the University of Michigan Palmer Commons. This is the third iteration of the
UnCamp—an event that is part hands-on coding and demonstration, part
inspirational use-cases, part community building, part informational, all
structured in the dynamic setting of an un-conference programming format. It
has visionary speakers mixed with boot-camp activities and hands-on sessions
with HTRC infrastructure and tools. This year’s keynote speakers are Professor
Michelle Alexopoulos, of the University of Toronto Department of Economics and
Professor Erez Lieberman Aiden of the Department of Genetics at the Baylor
College of Medicine. Read more about Michelle and Erez on the HTRC website.

Who should attend?
The HTRC UnCamp is targeted to the digital humanities tool developers,
researchers and librarians of HathiTrust member institutions, and graduate
students. Breakout sessions will cover a range of topics and be based around
attendees’ self-identified roles, so all levels of user/researcher are
encouraged to attend. Attendees will be asked for their input in planning
sessions, so please plan to register early!

Registration
The UnCamp will have a minimal registration fee of $150 so as to make the
Uncamp as affordable as possible for you to attend, while covering meals and
venue expenses. Registration will be open until March 16, 2015, and is limited
due to venue constraints, so do plan to register early.

Follow this link to register:
https://www.eventville.com/catalog/eventregistration1.asp?eventid=1011462

Additional information, including hotel information and the full UnCamp
program, will be posted at http://www.hathitrust.org/htrc_uncamp2015 as it
becomes available. Please forward any question to HTRC Executive Assistant,

Re: [CODE4LIB] Get It Services / Cart

2015-03-06 Thread Smith, Steelsen
Hi Ross and Amy,

Thanks for your replies - ILL software was in fact our first thought
(channeling everything through ILLiad) but we wanted to apply automation and
metadata enrichment more efficiently than we could within the available web
interface.

As for multiple requesting, Ross, you're right, that's the weird part. It's
really driven by special collections - we want a user to be able to collect as
many diverse objects as they'd like and review them *before* they submit
(partly to have an opportunity to make decisions given request limits and
restrictions information not available in the finding aid). These then need to
be routed to various physically (and administratively) separate special
collections units. For most special collections this aggregation would be
handled in the finding aid, but we have some that are cataloged in the ILS and
requested through the OPAC which does not natively handle any type of
multi-requesting, necessitating this function in the requesting interface. As
for why multi-requesting - it was in the project requirements for two separate
projects and requested by another unit in GC Access Services around the same
time so it seemed like the resolver + cart for physical items was the most reus!
 able approach.

Hope this informs a bit about why it might be useful in our case?

Thanks,
Steelsen

I'm working on a project to allow requests that will go to multiple
systems to be aggregated in a requesting interface. It would be
implemented as an independent application, allow a "shopping list" of
items to be added, and be able to perform some back end business logic
(availability checking, metadata enrichment, etc.).

This seems like a very common use case so I'm surprised that I've had
trouble finding anyone who has published an application that works like
this - the closest I've found being Umlaut which doesn't seem to support
multiple simultaneous requesting (although I couldn't get as far as
"request" in any sample system to be certain). Is anyone on the list
aware of such a project?

I'm aware of such a project. And it's been the bane of my existance for
5+ years. I've actually asked my boss to fire me a few times so that I
don't have to support it, as it's more like babysitting than anything
else.

However, it's for science archives, not libraries, and only really
supports objects that are stored in FITS (Flexibile Image Transport
System).

I cannot in good faith recommend that anyone use it. I've even started up
a mailing list for IT people in solar physics archives so that I can try
to make sure that we fight against implementing it for any new scientific
missions.

-Joe

ps. it's not an independent application ... it's the service that does
the 'metadata enrichment' because they store all of the data without any
metadata so that anyone outside not running their custom software can
actually make use of it ... and then I manage the system that does the
aggregation, and someone else wrote the logic for availability checking
(which seems to have decided to crap itself last month, shortly after the
programmer who wrote it 5+ years ago moved on to another job).

pps. if you're going to implement something like this, I'd recommend
using metalink for the 'shipping cart' sort of stuff, and hand off to some
dedicated download manager. For our community, an even better option
would be BagIt with a fetch.txt file, but the client-side tool support
just isn't out there.

Dear Steelsen and Code4Libbers:

My apologies, but I'm not quite sure I understand the difference between
what you are building and what an interlibrary loan application would
provide (for which there are many products available). You are probably
aware of those options (we use VDX right now for statewide lending and
requesting); there's at least one open source ILL option called FulfILLment

more seamless than that type of software? Perhaps someone else has a more
