[CODE4LIB] Call for participation in the Metadata Assessment Working Group, part of DLF Assessment Interest Group

2016-01-05 Thread Christina Marie Harlow
You are invited to participate in the DLF Assessment Interest Group’s (DLF AIG)
working group on Metadata in 2016. There is
more information about the group below, but first a few words about
participating in DLF AIG.

The only requirement for participation in a DLF AIG working group is a
willingness to dig in and devote a small part of your time contributing to the
tools, methods, and body of knowledge on digital library assessment. Joining
the DLF AIG listserv, a working group’s listserv, or attending a first working
group meeting does not commit anyone to anything. DLF AIG encourages everyone
to check out a working group before deciding to become an active contributor.
Attendance at the DLF forum is not a requirement for participation in any of
the working groups. Additionally, if your institution is not a DLF member, you
can still participate.

Introduction to Metadata Working Group
The Metadata Working Group aims to build guidelines, best practices, tools and
workflows around the evaluation and assessment of metadata used by and for
digital libraries and repositories. The group hopes to offer deliverables and
recommendations that digital library and repository users can implement for
metadata assessment and metadata quality control efforts. The 2016 direction
and goals of the group will be decided by the community during the first call
as well as during preliminary discussions via the Google
Group.
Find out more about our current aims and possible directions by reviewing,
commenting on, or editing this Google
Document. The bottom of that shared
document also has links to some existing
metadata assessment practices, discussions, and tools that this group hopes to
build off of.

How can you participate?
Anyone who works with metadata in any way and has an interest in building or
evaluating existing metadata assessment best practices, tools, and guidelines
is welcome to join this working group. To take part and/or keep up with monthly
call announcements (starting in late January), discussions, work,
documentation, and group goals, join the Metadata Working Group Google
Group.

Please contact Christina Harlow with questions about
the Metadata Working Group. For questions about the larger DLF Assessment
Interest Group, contact the DLF AIG co-leaders, Joyce Chapman
joyce.chap...@duke.edu and Santi Thompson
satho...@central.uh.edu.

Thank you for considering participating in the DLF AIG!

Hi folks-

It is time to propose your designs for the upcoming 2016 Code4Lib t-shirt! The

again this year.

high-quality image to this submission form: http://bit.ly/c4l16tshirts. The
screen-printers generally prefer vector art files (ai, .cdr, .eps & .pdf), so

[CODE4LIB] Code4LibNYC - Jan. 22 Workshops + Search for New Organizers

2015-01-08 Thread Christina Marie Harlow
Hi everyone (again):

2 announcements from Code4LibNYC:

*Workshops*

Just a reminder that Code4LibNYC http://libguides.metro.org/code4libnycalong
with METRO http://www.metro.org/ has 2 workshops coming up on January 22,
2015.

The morning (9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) workshop, led by Brian Hoffman, will be a
hands-on introduction to Rails: http://metro.org/events/575/
This afternoon workshop (1:30 p.m. - 5 p.m.), led by Ben Armintor, will be
an introduction to Project Blacklight (projectblacklight.org):
http://metro.org/events/576/

We are still taking volunteers at either (or both) workshops to serve as
teaching assistants. Please email us if you are interested.

*Changing Organizers*

Unfortunately, Drew and myself need to step down from being Code4LibNYC
Organizers because of awesome new jobs and/or upcoming moves out of the NYC
area.

So, we are looking for people to help organize the Code4LibNYC events
starting this spring. Please email me if you are interested - and although
I'm moving, I will be available to help get folks started, if needed.

Thanks all!

Some discussion happened off list, and the possibility of an unconference
was mentioned, perhaps in the early spring when a number of holidays/events
have passed.

A survey and co-organizing the unconference you mention sounds like a great

[CODE4LIB] Code4LibNYC: January 22 Rails + Blacklight Workshops

2014-11-19 Thread Christina Marie Harlow
*Please excuse cross-postings*

We are very excited to announce the Code4LibNYC Winter Workshops, scheduled
for January 22, 2015 at METRO http://www.metro.org/. These workshops are
a chance for people in the Code4LibNYC community to drill down on some
helpful tools and code.

The morning (9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) workshop, led by Brian Hoffman, will be a
hands-on introduction to Rails, a popular web development framework. You
can find more details and register here: http://metro.org/events/575/

This afternoon workshop (1:30 p.m. - 5 p.m.), led by Ben Armintor, will be
an introduction to Project Blacklight (projectblacklight.org), an open
source discovery interface built with Rails. You can find more details and
register here: http://metro.org/events/576/

Notes:
- You can register just for one workshop, but there is a discount for
registering for both. See the registration pages for details.
- We are looking for volunteers at either (or both) workshops to serve as
teaching assistants/proctors. This involves helping participants as
questions arise while the workshop is ongoing. Please email us if you are
interested!
- Participants *must* bring their own laptops with Rails installed. We will
circulate instructions on installing Rails a week or so before the
workshops. Depending on interest, there may also be an informal
'install-fest' get together as well.

As ever, if you would like to see some activity or event as part of
Code4LibNYC, get in touch! We also have presentations from previous
meetings available at our libguide: http://libguides.metro.org/code4libnyc

we will aim to offer both men's and women's sizes again this year.

So now we need some t-shirt designs! Please propose your t-shirt designs on
this page: http://wiki.code4lib.org/2015_T-Shirt_Design_Proposals

Re: [CODE4LIB] ACTION REQUESTED: Volunteer for 2015 Conference Committees

2014-08-12 Thread Christina Marie Harlow
Thanks Tom for the message! I was wondering about this today. I may be
jumping the gun, but I'm hoping to start t-shirt and pre-conferences
planning very soon (now?).

As regards t-shirts, do we change printers/shirt types/colors each
year? Should we look for a PDX-based printer to support local
business? PDX people tell me if you prefer a color. Otherwise, expect
the call for tshirts designs to go out in the next few weeks, with
voting happening in late November. We can work out the other questions
in the committee.

As regards pre-conferences, can someone give me an idea of what
space(s) they might be in? How many we could have? In the next few
weeks we can also put out the first call for pre-conf proposals, which
can also give us an idea of tech/infrastructure needed.

If I can help otherwise please let me know. I'm looking forward to c4l 2015.
